I entered a short story competition that required me to write a 100 word short story in 24 hours. The story needed to meet three things, a genre (Sci-Fi), an event (Seeing a rainbow) and to use a certain word (Micro). It took me a while to find the right idea and to get it to work in a way I was happy with. But like the last time I entered something similar, I enjoyed the desire to find the story that sparked the right way for me. So, for the sake of creativity, here is 1 of the 24 rejected stories in a 100 word format..
Burst The Bubble
As the cluster of micro stars twist and turn one final time before disappearing in upon themselves, Roderick hears Catherine’s voice once more.
“There is a circle in the unending light of tomorrow, chase the rainbow and you will find your way home.”
He tightens his weathered hands into fists and grits his teeth together in ferocity. “Let’s finish this then!” he spits as he flings himself to his feet and looks deep into the eyes of his nephew Jackson, who smiles wryly.
“We’re already dead, yet still we stand here. How can you finish forever?”
“Even stars burn out!”
