Cadence to Cradle

A Twisted Verse by Matthew Tonks

Lingering light, perversion of night, a breath I choose to bind.
Gluttony my tomb tonight, and words will carve my mind.
There was a moment through the dark, when midnight lost its sight,
I saw a hobbled man take flight beneath the bleeding light.

He captivated me, his joy became my sin,
For in our end he ruled the night and drew my spirit in.
A witch’s broth, her laugh divine, her fate already spread,
Wrinkles in the flesh and bone spoke softly to the dead.

I asked and begged before the end, and gained its fleeting trust,
My shadow slipped from where I stood and fell into the dust.
Now something moves within the glass, more me than I have been,
A truth unmasked, a darker twin, that stares from deep within.

Tell me—before it forgets your name.
