Day 190 – He Said – Where It Ends

“I-I-Is, is that true?” She asks, turning to him, her eyes wide with panic, her bottom lip trembling.

“Would I lie?” He replies coldly, as he gently stirs his drink with a finger, smiling. She searches his face, his eyes, for anything, any hint of doubt, but finds little else, but confirmation of the words he just told her.

“Fuck, you’re serious, h-h-how, how long until the results are back?”

“A few days, but, I already know the answer, it’s going to be positive,” he says as he picks up his glass and empties it into his mouth, then signals the waiter for another.

“I-I-I, I don’t know what to say, I fe….”

“Don’t say anything, I didn’t ask you here for pity, I asked you here because I don’t want to leave things unfinished,” he says, leaning onto the the table, locking eyes with her. “We have unfinished things, that, well, should be completed before my time is done.”

She shifts in her seat, bites her lip nervously and blushes, “Sam, I-I, I don’t think we have anything left that needs to be said,” she says, reaching across the table and tightly squeezing his hands. “When we ended, it was bad, I know. I didn’t give you a chance, I was hurt, so were you, we both sai…”

“Vic, don’t, they’re in the past. Sure, it was painful, but, it’s past. I want to make sure, that, before I go, you understand what you meant to me. I say meant, because, well, pretty soon that’s how everyone is going to refer to me, was, did, had, all past tense shite.”

She squeezes his hands again, before releasing them, then pulls a tissue from her hand bag to wipe away the tears that run down her face. “This is terrible Sam, I just don’t know what to say, is it cancer?”

“Cancer? No, no, I don’t think it’s cancer.”

“A tumor?”

“No, nothing like that.”

“W-W-Well what do they think it, it is?”

“I’m not sure, they don’t really know, but none of those, something, something different,” he says as he leans back in his seat, vagueing out for a few seconds before he shakes himself back into reality, and smiles nervously. “But, it’s not why we’re here, we’re here to talk, to celebrate, to put the past behind us, and, well, move on with what we’ve got left of our lives.”

“Oh Sam, you’re so brave, to think, we left things broken for too long, maybe, if we…”

“What? Maybe if we sat down and talked about all this earlier we could’ve sorted it out, repaired what we had, made something new, something, stronger?”

“Maybe,” she says, her lips tremble as she smiles nervously.

“Don’t make me laugh, we ended for a reason, not because we grew apart, but because you were a stupid whore,” he says with a grin as he takes a sip of his drink, her mouth drops open, and the blood runs from her cheeks. “What? Got nothing to say? Why don’t you go online and say something there? What, surprised? Fuck Vic, I may not be you’re friend on Facebook anymore, but I saw the message you wrote about tonight, how you needed a good laugh, how you wanted to see me beg for a second chance, how you were going to flaunt what I’ll never have again in my face. Well, who’s laughing now bitch?”

She shoots up from her seat, her glance hot, striking, like a vipers bite, “FUCK YOU SAM! I HOPE YOU BURN IN HELL!”

He smiles, “Most likely, but, at least I’ll know you would’ve warmed my spot for me.”

“W-W-What do you mean by that?”

He looks down at his watch, then up at her, “You should know the answer to that in about three minutes,” he says with a broad grin.
