    Skillet

He leaps from his bed, still half-asleep, as the banging coming from beyond the bedroom, from somewhere else within the house, pulls him from his world of dreams and frantically into reality. He stumbles out into the small hallway that connects all the rooms in the house, and his eyes grow wide with panic as he sees the light coming from beneath the kitchen door. He looks around the hallway, searching for some sort of weapon, anything, but there’s nothing in sight. He looks over his shoulder, back towards the bedroom. Before he can even contemplate going back, the kitchen door opens, and he freezes in fright. For five or more minutes, he stands there, petrified, waiting for whoever is in the kitchen to come walking out into the hallway, but no one does. Finally, after so many different scenarios run through his head, he builds up the courage to take a step forward, making his way nervously towards the kitchen. His ears prick up as he hears someone opening drawers, moving their contents around, then closing them again. He panics, trying to work out what they’d be searching for. He stops again, as he realises now that someone is definitely in his home. After ten or more minutes of slowly making his way down the three-metre hallway, he reaches the doorway to the kitchen. Nervously, he peers his head around the corner, and his mouth drops open. Searching through his kitchen cupboards and drawers is himself.

“What the fuck?” he whispers. The alternate version of himself rummaging through the kitchen stops.

“It took you long enough to drag yourself down the hallway,” he says, looking in his direction. “Well, don’t stand there all night. A hand would be nice.”

“W-W-What the fuck is going on?” he says as he slowly enters the kitchen.

“What does it look like? I’m trying to find a bottle opener,” he says, pointing to the bottle of cider that sits on the bench, condensation running down into a puddle that’s formed while it’s been there for the last twenty minutes.

“R-R-Right drawer, at the b-b-b-back,” he says, pointing towards the drawer.

“Of course, right drawer, at the back. I can’t believe I forgot. I mean, it’s been a long time since I lived here, but still, you’d think I’d remember something like that,” he says as he pulls open the drawer, gesturing for him to take a seat. “Sit down, Kevin, we’ve got a lot to talk about,” he says as he opens the bottle and slides it to Kevin.

“W-W-What the fuck are you? Are you me?”

“Awesome first questions. The simple answer is yes, I’m you.”

    “T-T-There’s a co-c-complicated answer?”

“There’s always a complicated answer,” he says, placing a hand over his face and removing it to reveal a robotic skull beneath. Kevin’s mouth drops open again, and he slowly raises his shaking hands to rub his eyes. “I know, I know, it’s a lot to take in, but there doesn’t seem to be much of an option to reveal this slowly to you. We just don’t have the luxury anymore.”

    “A-A-Am…”

“No, you’re not dreaming. This is as real as it gets, sadly.”

    “S-S-So…”

“Why is this happening? Because you’re the answer to our problems. I know it doesn’t make sense, but that’s what I’m here to tell you. Some two or three hundred years from now, the human race is facing extinction—not from some threatening outside alien race or the impending collapse of the universe like all the movies would have you believe. The human race is going to become extinct because the genetic alterations humanity has rigorously subjected themselves to have destroyed the gene pool to the point where reproduction on any level is useless. We, they, have effectively backed themselves genetically into a corner with no way out.”

    “W-W-Wh…”

“How does me being here fit into all of this? A few months ago, something happened—a recording that was stored in my memory banks activated itself. A recording I’d never seen before, a recording that should’ve never existed. The recording was of this moment, this meeting between you and me,” he says. Kevin looks dumbstruck as his mind tries to wrap around everything. He reaches down, grabs the cider, and takes a large mouthful, swallowing it quickly.

“T-T-This is crazy,” he says, wiping his mouth.

“You’re telling me. See, up until that moment, up until that recording played, I’d always believed I was an android. Somehow cast back in time for some unknown crazy reason, from some unknown future. But as soon as that recording played, I knew the real truth—the real reason I ended up here, lost in time, with no memory of why I was here,” he says. Kevin takes another large mouthful of the drink.

“I-I-I, okay, you’ve lost me. I have no idea what you’re even talking about now. What do you mean, lost in time with no memory?”

“I wish I had time to tell you. I wish we could sit here and fill in all the holes, but w…”

Suddenly everything shifts. Kevin’s head feels as if it cracks open, and then he finds himself somewhere else, with a woman waving her hands in front of his face.

“Kevin? Hello? Kevin, are you okay?”

“I-I-I, I truly do not know,” he says, tilting his head to the side, showing his confusion.

“What the hell happened? You stopped mid-sentence and just stood there like a fucking statue.”

“A memory file that I have no recollection of ever existing just played.”

    “Fuck, was it anything important?”

    “Saving humanity.”

“I’m telling you, this is the hottest thing that’s going to come out in a long time, the HOTTEST! You have to—NO, make that, you’ve GOTTA get in on the ground floor, or you’ll miss out!” he says excitedly.

“I don’t know, it looks a little strange, and I’m not really sure there’s such a strong market for this sort of stuff. I can see you seem to think there is, but the only thing it’s got going for it as far as I can see is its name.”

“BULLSHIT! I could call it a turd, and it would still make shitloads of cash,” he says as he pushes a pile of papers across the table. “Read the reviews and tell me you can’t see money in it.”

He places his hands on the papers and looks around the room before looking back at him. “I’m going to be honest with you, just because I can see you’re a good kid and all, a doer, not a talker, and I like that, I really do. But this sort of stuff, to be honest, isn’t what people I circulate with would buy, and more importantly, would be interested in putting money into. You’re barking up the wrong tree, it’s just that simple, kid,” he says as he gets to his feet.

“Please, Mister Sackmore, just have a read of the reviews. If you don’t see any way we can do business together after that, then I’ll leave you alone, I swear. Just please read at least one of the reviews before you make your decision!”

Kenneth Sackmore stands there for a few moments and shakes his head. “I like your eagerness, kid, I really do. Reminds me of myself when I was starting out. But it’s just not what I’m looking for. Why don’t you try crowdfunding? I’m sure you’d have a lot more luck there.”

“They won’t take it on any of the platforms,” he says as he sinks into his seat. “They say it’s too risky an item to display on their sites and suggested going private. Which is why I’m here, hoping you’d at least give me the chance to show you what kind of profit you’d make by getting you to help fund the build of the three thousand pre-orders we already have,” he says with a wry smile. Sackmore sits back down quickly, his face pale, his hands trembling.

    “T-T-Three thousand pre-orders?”

    “Three thousand and counting.”

    “You’re fucking bullshitting me?”

“I swear I’m not,” he says as he pulls out his mobile phone, opens his emails, and hands it to Sackmore. “Three thousand and eighty-seven as of two minutes ago.”

    “W-W-What’s the retail?”

“Two hundred and sixty for the standard model, four hundred for the deluxe.”

“And the cost to build each of the standard units?”

“Fifty-eight, maybe less, if I order in bulk.”

Sackmore picks up one of the pieces of paper and begins reading it, then looks over to him as his bottom lip quivers. “H-H-How much bullshit is in these reviews?”

“None, they’re all legit. There are even self-help videos to show the users how to use them,” he says, smiling.

“And both sexes can use the device?”

“Absolutely, it’s designed for maximum pleasure whether you’re a man, woman, or in-between. The device will always bring the user to a guaranteed, mind-blowing orgasm, every single time without fail.”

Sackmore places the paper down, runs a hand across his brow, wipes away the sweat, and then extends a hand. “Okay, Mister Wenttoroe, let’s bring your Elastic Orange to the people.”

He grabs his hand and shakes it vigorously. “Let’s drown the world in cum,” he says with a wide, broad grin.

    Olivia

I met her by accident. Well, okay, that’s not entirely true. I did mean to meet her, but I didn’t go there to meet her; it just happened. I guess you want some understanding, and I can see how that makes sense. So let me start at the beginning, or better yet, let’s start from a few hours ago, when I arrived at Lenny Sanders’ fiftieth birthday party.

Originally, I went there knowing full well my ex-wife and her new boy toy, Sammy the motherfucking porn star, would be there. I guess you can tell we didn’t part on good terms, but he is a porn star—that part I’m not joking about.

You see, she wanted more out of life, and I was sick and tired of working my body to the bone and not getting anything from it. So we parted ways: I quit my job, and she started fucking ‘long dong’ Sammy, who earned his money on his back. He had lots of energy for her, and she didn’t seem to mind that he shagged whoever he had to for a living.

I googled him not too long ago, and well, I can see why she likes him, although I’m not sure if she’d googled him. The sorry son of a bitch has done some bestiality in his time. But I guess, really, that’s not too much different than doing her.

Anyway, where was I? That’s right, her. She walked in alone and sort of drifted around the party, head down most of the time, with the occasional smile, but otherwise kept to herself. We made eye contact somewhere between the drinks and the cheese. I smiled, she blushed, and the next thing I know, we’re down the hall in one of Lenny’s kids’ rooms, banging away like a couple of teenagers. She did things to me that I never knew could be done, and I did what she told me to.

It had been a while since I’d been intimate with someone, and there was a mess. She laughed, we quickly cleaned ourselves up, and made our way back to the party. By the end of the night, I was quite tipsy. Olivia—that was her name—and I had spent most of the night talking.

I found out she was Sammy’s ex, in many ways, life and film. To say she was surprised when she found out my ex-wife was his current shag, as she put it, was an understatement. Her jaw dropped, and then she laughed. At the end of the night, we exchanged numbers and went our separate ways.

When I got home, I decided to google her. At first, when she didn’t come up, I figured she must’ve used a different name. That’s around the time I noticed her eyes in a picture of two up-and-coming male adult stars, Long John Sammy, and Deep Down Larry. I was shocked, appalled; I felt like she’d lied to me. I picked up the phone and dialed her number, but before she picked up, I hung up.

What a gutless wonder I was. As it would turn out though, modern technology was to be my enemy, and seconds later my phone started ringing. When I answered it, she was on the other end. What followed was a four-hour phone conversation about life, the ups and downs of being who you want to be, and the mistakes we all make. Making it the best night of my life. Tomorrow, I think, is going to be even better.

    Respect

“Please, sir, I was hungry. I—I—I haven’t eaten in days. I didn’t want to take it, but I saw you had more…” The boy doesn’t get to finish his sentence as the man slaps him across the face, knocking him to the ground.

“Shut up, child. You’ve made your bed; now you must pay the price with your life!”

“Rademer, stop this foolishness!” another man yells as he grabs Rademer by the arm and pushes him away.

“You dare touch me like I am a lowly peasant? Are you actually defending this boy, Jensen?”

“He’s starving, for God’s sake. Let him take the bread. You’ve proven how this poor fool’s life is of no fortune; killing him will do nothing!”

“It’ll do plenty. It’ll teach all the other rats out there not to touch what is mine, like you will learn.”

“What, are you threatening me now?”

“You must be reminded who you serve. Though it breaks my heart to do this, you must be made an example of. For, if I do not, others will think they can do the same, and I cannot have that now, can I?” he says as he draws his sword.

“Don’t be a fool. Walk away; no one will think any less of you,” Jensen says nervously as he pulls out his own sword.

“You put on a brave show, and the crowd has been mystified, but I can see what is truly in your eyes. I can see the fear. You realise that I am greater than you could ever hope to be, for you are but a petty stone on the road, who will be stepped on or thrown to the side.”

“Do you entertain yourself with your words?” Jensen asks as they slowly circle each other, swords ready to strike.

Rademer laughs. “I do not do it to entertain; I do it out of repetition. This dance is nothing new to me, as you know, and I only offer words to soften the blow that I will bring down upon your skull—words that will make you feel less ashamed of the defeat that will be at my hands.”

“You’ll find that I am not as easy to kill as you hope!” he yells as he attacks. The swords clash together as Jensen brings his sword down powerfully, but his attack is blocked, and Rademer drives a boot into his stomach, sending him crashing to the ground. Quickly, he tries to scramble to his feet, but instead comes face to face with the end of Rademer’s blade.

“I told you, there is only defeat here for you.”

“Do it then! Add another kill so you can continue to build up your reputation, your name. Build the mighty legend, so all that hear it fear it.”

“What is a man if he does not have a title?”

“Is that how you see yourself in this world? Is this how you find meaning?”

“Meaning? There is no meaning to be found, boy. Title brings respect, so either you respect my position or die—there is nothing else!”

“How pathetic, to live your life building a reputation that is built upon a lie. I’ve seen the true you. I’ve—”

“My life is no lie,” he yells as he swings the blade, removing Jensen’s head with one clean stroke. Blood gushes from the severed stump, and his body falls to the ground, followed by a river of blood that flows quickly from his headless corpse.

Rademer turns as a knife is thrust up into his chest. Wearily, he looks down upon the boy. Hate is all that he can see in the child’s eyes. With a sneer upon his face, the boy twists the knife, and Rademer falls to his knees, gasping for breath. For the first time in his long, destructive life, he has been surprised. He curses his stupidity for forgetting about the child, allowing his anger to focus on Jensen, when he should’ve taken the child first. His eyes widen as the boy grits his teeth and lets out a volatile scream as he slashes the knife across his throat. As everything begins to shut down, the child spits in his face, yelling, “Death to the pig dog!” as Rademer collapses to the ground. His blood gushes from his torn throat like an open tap, intermingling with Jensen’s, as it runs down into the gutter.

    See a Penny

The ground twists and turns beneath his feet as he stumbles from here to there until he eventually crashes into the still-spinning earth with a vicious thud.

For many moments, he lies there with his eyes tightly closed, frantically gripping handfuls of dirt in a desperate bid to stabilize the world around him. But his desperation is only rewarded with a thick sea of vomit that escapes his gullet and sprays out of his trembling lips onto the twisting land before him.

“I told you it would be a wild ride,” Kevin sneers as he crouches over the trembling Marshall. “You should’ve taken the red pill and gone back to the fake-arsed reality you love so fucking much.”

“Y-Y-You said it was a lie!” he spits through wet, saturated lips. “Y-Y-You said she w-w-was still alive, and I’d b-be able to s-see her a-a-again.”

Kevin raises his eyebrows and smiles wryly as he shoves his hands in his pockets and tilts his head to the air. “That doesn’t really sound like something I would say. All that stuttering is definitely not me!” he jests cheerfully.

Marshall’s eyes tear open, and he stares up at Kevin with terror-filled eyes. “DON’T DO THIS!” he spits. “DON’T LIE! DON’T PLAY ME LIKE A FOOL!”

Kevin’s smile widens broadly. “A fool is a fool regardless of how they are played, and you, my finely feathered fool of a friend, are truly a sight to behold.”

“S-STOP IT!” Marshall screams as he thrusts himself unsteadily to his feet, taking random steps back and forth, swaying as if he were on the deck of a boat. “T-T-Tell me the TRUTH!”

“But I have, every time you have asked, I have said,” he says with his wry smile, looking amused. “I answer with only the truth, while you hear a lie.”

“T-T-THAT’S BECAUSE IT’S ALL YOU DO!” he snaps, stumbling to his knees as he vomits bile and blood from his now empty stomach.

“OUCH!” Kevin says with a hiss. “I’d sit this one out if I were you, sunshine. That isn’t what you want to be seeing when you go the old heave-ho. If you’re not careful, next time we might see some organs.”

Marshall spits out a mouthful of sickly tainted saliva and drags his hand across his face. “I-I just… I just want to s-see her,” he stammers, tears running down his face.

Kevin frowns and takes a deep breath as he pulls a small key from one of his pockets. “See this key?” he asks, holding it proudly out towards Marshall, who nods uneasily. Kevin winks and smiles. “This key unlocks a lock, like all keys do, and like all things locked, there’s something inside whatever the lock this key opens is locking. But that’s not what I was looking for,” he says as he tosses the key away and reaches back into his pocket once more. After several more moments of fumbling around and pulling faces, he finally smiles again and pulls out a shiny single penny. “THIS IS IT!” he announces proudly.

    “W-W-What is it?”

Kevin rolls his eyes and smacks his lips together. “Obviously, it’s a penny, Sherlock.”

“I-I-I, I can see that. W-Why do you have it, and why is it important?”

“Ah, right, the what is it,” he says bemusedly. “It’s what they call a piece of luck, the old ‘see a penny, pick it up and all day you’ll have good luck’ shtick. Well, this penny, this is that penny.”

“W-W-Will it h-help me see her again?”

“What? No, no! This penny is mine, I found it, I have the luck,” he says, thrusting a thumb into his own chest. “But if you found one, maybe that would help you see her again.”

“W-What if I took y-your penny? W-Would it help me see her?”

Kevin smiles wryly, “What? Are you se…” Before he could finish his sentence, Marshall awkwardly launches himself toward Kevin.

With a pathetic thud, Marshall hits the ground before Kevin.

“Really? Did you just try and attack me?”

“J-JUST GIVE ME THE P-PENNY!” he screams.

Kevin shakes his head disapprovingly as he flicks the coin into the air and catches it, before he crouches over Marshall once again. “You don’t get it, do you? I can’t give it to you and you can’t take it from me. If either of those happens, the penny is no longer lucky. The only way this penny will work is if I were to lose it, and you were to find it, and neither of those things are going to happen,” he says as he flicks the coin up into the air once again. This time, Marshall leaps upwards and drives a blade up into Kevin’s chest, catching the coin in his other hand.

“BULLSHIT!” Marshall hisses with a beaming smile across his lips as he tightly grips the coin and begins to laugh. Then he screams as the coin burns through his flesh and drops to the ground before erupting in flames.

“N-N-NO!” Marshall screams. “W-WHAT HAPPENED! W-WHAT HAPPENED?” he screams, looking over into Kevin’s empty, dead eyes, a smile etched across his lips.

Today’s story is brought to life by the following prompt…

This is my submission for Kevin’s No Theme Thursday.

    A Doorway Away

Electricity cascades throughout the room like waves of water, creating a miniature ecosystem as winds begin to tug and pull at the computer consoles. Thunder cracks, lightning strikes, and a black oily void tears open in the middle of the room; fire ignites around it, burning a hole in the very fabric of existence.

“T-T-THAT’S ENOUGH, JACOB, SHUT IT DOWN! SHUT IT DOWN!” Ezekiel screams as he shrouds his face from the relentless winds.

“I-I-I, I CAN’T!” Jacob calls back as he crouches behind the main control panel.

    “CAN’T, OR WON’T?”

Jacob shrugs his shoulders while pointing at the countdown timer displayed on his watch. “BOTH!”

Explosions erupt around them as the winds start working their way into something more devastating, ripping the room apart, then the building, until the small area of the office that the two cower in is all that remains, with the winds circling like a tornado, and they are in its eye.

“HOW ABOUT NOW?” Ezekiel calls out. “DO YOU THINK NOW IS A GOOD TIME TO TURN THE DAMN THING OFF?”

Jacob peers over the console, spying on the void as it bubbles like a boiling pot, then sinks back down. Shaking his head, he says, “I-I-I, I CAN’T, NOT WHILE WE’RE THIS CLOSE! AND BESIDES,” he adds with a nervous glance over to Ezekiel, “I DON’T KNOW WHERE IT’S DRAWING ITS POWER FROM NOW, SO I DON’T EVEN KNOW IF PULLING THE SWITCH WILL DO ANYTHING ANYWAY.”

They trade a silent moment before Ezekiel drives a fist into his tattered desk. “BULLSHIT! STOP MAKING EXCUSES AND PULL THE GODDAMN LEVER!”

    “J-JUST GIVE ME A FEW M-MOMENTS MORE, WE’RE ALMOST T-THERE!” Jacob begs.

Ezekiel shakes his head disapprovingly and rushes towards the console. “IF YOU WON’T END THIS, I WILL!” he screams as he reaches out to grab the lever, but before he can, an explosion erupts from the void, grabbing Ezekiel and dragging him into its murky, oily depths.

Jacob tears his eyes away and swallows nervously. “I-I’m sorry, old friend, but what we’re doing c-can’t be stopped, not until the pathway stabilises,” he mumbles, glancing at his watch. Sweat cascades down his brow, stinging his wide eyes. He drags his arm across his brow, soaking up the sea of sweat with his sleeve. “J-just a few more, j-just a few more,” he stammers, his eyes widening. He jumps back in fright as his alarm screams to life. For a few seconds, he sits in awe, then shakes himself awake, leaps up, and pulls the lever down. The room falls silent and dark. Then, as if rebooted, all the computers come back to life around him, the room whole once again.

“W-What have you done?” a voice asks from across the room. Jacob turns to see a figure standing in front of the void, as the liquid that fills it softly spins.

    “A-A-Are you h-him?”

“I cannot be identified by your petty constructs. I am beyond that. I am beyond you,” the figure says as the world lights up around them, exploding in a sea of hot-white.

Jacob cowers, shielding his eyes in desperation. “I-I-I BROUGHT YOU HERE! I OPENED THE DOOR! Y-Y-YOU’RE BOUND BY RIGHT TO ANSWER MY QUESTION!” he calls out. The room suddenly grows silent again.

Wearily, Jacob slowly peers out from beneath his trembling fingers and gasps with horror, the breath catching in his chest. Before him stands the figure, towering above him with wings of flesh and flame, surrounded by endless stars and planets.

The being looks down upon him. “Then ask your question, my child.”

The Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS July 20, 2024

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “a repeated story.” Include in your post a story you’ve repeated again and again or a story you’ve heard again and again. Or write about the phenomenon itself. Have fun..

    Just Like Bill

Shawn’s face screws up, and he lets out a long-winded sigh of frustration. “I just don’t think you’re getting what I’m saying!” he grumbles, thrusting his head into his hands and staring at the floor with wide, frantic eyes.

Ashley grips him by the shoulders and begins to knead them. “It’s not important, we can talk about it tom…” but she doesn’t get to finish her words as Shawn wriggles out of her grip.

“GOD DAMN IT!” he bellows, grabbing at the air, strangling imaginary throats, snapping them over his knee, then grabbing another and repeating the process several times before arching himself towards the roof and screaming once again. He takes a deep breath and turns back to face Ashley, his hands clenched into fists and his jaw tightly closed. “I can’t tell you tomorrow because there is no tomorrow, like I said before,” he grumbles through clenched teeth.

She shakes her head and crosses her arms matter-of-factly across her chest. “That never happened,” she says.

His eyes widen, and his face turns bright red as a sea of blood floods his cheeks. “D-Don’t FUCKING do this again,” he spits, thrusting a pointed finger towards the wall, standing on tiptoe as he does. “It’s all THERE! It’s all THERE!” he cries.

Ashley looks at the wall, then turns back to Shawn, her face wrought with confusion. “What’s all there, Shawn?” she asks.

Shawn sighs loudly and turns to the wall. “EVERYTHING! From start…” His words trail off, and his jaw drops open as a fresh sea of sweat breaks out upon his brow. “F-F-FUCK!” he spits, as he starts jumping on the spot. “FUCK! FUCK! FUCK!” he cries, eventually collapsing in a heap on the floor, tears flooding down his cheeks.

Ashley crouches over him. “W-W-What was supposed to be on the wall, Shawn?” she asks nervously.

“Everything,” he sighs as he shakes his head in dismay. “Everything!”

“C-Can you show me? C-Can you do it again?”

“I’m sick of doing it! I just want things to go back the way they were.”

She takes a stuttered sigh and tucks her head into her knees. “How were things?”

“Don’t patronise me!” he quips back.

“Shawn, please, that’s not what I’m doing. I-I-I really want to know, truly,” she says softly, as she reaches out and grips his arm gently.

    “R-Really?”

    She smiles, “Yes, Shawn, really.”

He leaps up, a renewed smile on his face. “ALRIGHT!” he announces loudly as he pulls a marker pen from his pocket. He rushes to the wall, wipes away the few family portraits that hung proudly on display, and quickly draws a large circle. He turns back to Ashley, his face twisted, frenzied almost, a sea of spit leaking from his protruding bottom lip, and nods proudly.

They stand locked in this stance for some moments, before Ashley finally shrugs her shoulders. “I don’t get it!”

His eyes widen, and his lip quivers. “W-W-What’s not t-to get?” he stammers, casting a glance back to the circle, and then back to Ashley. “I-It’s right there!”

Ashley swallows a nervous mouthful of air and gets to her feet. “I can see a circle, but I don’t understand the intention behind it.”

He throws his head in the air and screams. “The circle is THE intention, it’s EVERYTHING, it’s today, yesterday, and tomorrow, continuing in a circle without end, without pause, repeating forever and ever, and ever…” he cries, his words trailing away.

“OH! Like Groundhog Day?” she asks excitedly.

    “W-W-What?” he stammers.

“You know, the Bill Murray movie where he keeps reliving the same day over, time and time again.”

“YES!” he screams loudly, grabbing Ashley by the arms. “YES! Just like that! Just like Bill Murray! I’M JUST LIKE BILL MURRAY!”

“Cool, have you tried to kill yourself yet?” she asks with a wicked smile across her lips.

    “W-What?”

“What, what?” she asks, as she looks at Shawn curiously.

“T-The part about me k-k-killing myself l-like Bill Murray in Groundhog…” but his words come to a halt, as he notices the wall adorned with family portraits once again. “Fuck!” he sighs.

    Blood Drunk

He moves through the streets like a wrecking ball, crashing into everything and anything in his way. Eventually, he crashes into a garbage bin and tumbles hopelessly to the ground in a heap. He lies there for a few moments before noticing her standing in the shadows, watching him. Then, he awkwardly pulls himself up onto all fours.

    “Enjoying the s-show?” he slurs.

“I wouldn’t call it much of a show, more like ‘white man go boom,’” she replies in a thick European accent.

“Well, fuck you, missy!” he says as he clumsily gets to his feet. “I don’t need your shit, I-I-I…” He doesn’t get to finish his sentence as he violently empties the contents of his stomach across the footpath. For a few moments afterward, he stands there swaying back and forth, groaning. Finally, he draws back through his nose and spits out a large wad of saliva, snot, and vomit onto the ground. Then, he uses the sleeve of his shirt to wipe his mouth.

“Well, that was very civilised. You could’ve at least done it in the gutter.”

“W-W-Who are you, my mum? Because lady, I’ve got issues with that bitch.”

“I’m not surprised you have. I’m sure she made her exit from your life as soon as she was able to. Was it when they cut the cord?”

“What, so now you’re a comedian? I’ve heard farts that are funnier.”

“Oh, sugar, you’re breaking my heart. Here I am trying to connect with you, when all you’re doing is pushing me away. And love muffin, men have been doing that to me my entire life, while also making themselves easy targets, and I can’t resist easy targets,” she says with a laugh.

“Fuck you!” he yells as he stumbles forward and slams into the wall. He collapses to his knees as the whole world begins to separate into three distinct versions of itself. He shakes his head, trying to pull his vision back to one workable world.

She continues to laugh as he picks himself uneasily off the ground and back to his feet. “Honey, you need to go somewhere you can sleep this off. Being out here in your state is dangerous.”

“Says you? What are you doing hanging around in the dark for anyway? You some sort of vampire?”

“Was it my accent that gave it away?” she says, smiling a toothy grin.

“This another one of your lame-arsed jokes? Because I preferred the fart you did earlier. Wait, that was me, not you.”

She laughs. “I’m sorry, pet, but the jokes are over. I’m hungry, and it looks like you’re on tonight’s menu,” she says, licking her lips.

“I’m not a fucking blood donor, BITCH! Go find another poor sap to take for a ride,” he says as he swings a poorly aimed punch toward her. With little effort, she easily outmanoeuvres his attack and sends him crashing to the ground once more with only a slight push. The ground hasn’t even connected with his face before she is on top of him. With inhuman strength, she pulls his head back and grabs a large handful of hair.

He tries to fight her off, but in his state, she is too powerful. It’s then that he feels her teeth dig into his neck like a shot of electricity. Desperately, he tries to scream, but nothing comes out as he collapses into unconsciousness.

When he finally opens his eyes, his head feels like it’s been used as a punching bag for the last few hours. Ever so slowly, he pulls himself up onto his elbows and looks around the small cell he’s found himself in.

“W-W-What the fuck?” he mutters to himself as he squints his eyes, trying to focus on the world beyond the bars.

“Mister Ross,” a voice says from the other side of the bars. He looks up at Officer Lance Darcy, who stands there with a broad smile on his face and a cup of coffee in his hand. “Welcome back to the land of the living, Mister Ross. You gave us quite a fight last night. It seems you thought you were fighting vampires when we found you stumbling about. It took four of us to wrestle you to the ground, although with a blood-alcohol reading of one point six, I’m not surprised. Your blood was pretty much alcohol.”

    Negative Positive

It was hell waiting for the results. I knew everything would be okay—well, I hoped it would. One slip-up is nothing, right? When the doctor came into the room, the look on his face made my bladder lose control of itself for a few seconds. He ran a sweaty hand through what little hair was on his head and said we needed to take more tests.

I asked the questions, the ones any of us would: you know, life, death, and all the things in between. But he couldn’t give me an answer, or wouldn’t. Either way, I wasn’t going to get the answers I needed then and there. He handed me a container and said it was important to get on top of it all before it’s too late.

Too late? What the fuck does that mean?

He pointed me in the direction of the toilets. I did my business and quickly returned to him with an overflowing container. He looked at me, put on a glove and took it, then handed me another container.

“What’s this for?” I asked him.

He said they needed another sample, one I would have to work for. I knew what he meant. Again, I asked him what could possibly be wrong with me that would require a urine sample and now a semen sample. He once more brushed off my question with a “it’s just a precaution” answer.

So, I went to a room they had secluded in the back. It was kitted out with all the things one would need: books, DVDs, and access to the internet, for people with more obscure needs than what the rest provided. I can tell you, I’ve never worked as hard as I did at that moment to get my rocks off. The beast wouldn’t stand; he didn’t want to know about anything in case there was something wrong with his equipment, and I didn’t blame him. But after fifteen minutes of coaxing, he delivered what the doctor needed, and I quickly ran back to his office.

The fucker had taken another patient by that time, but I barged in anyway, sweat running down my face. I thrust the half-full container of my little guys into the young woman’s face that he was seeing at the time. I don’t know who was more embarrassed; in the end, I think it was me.

The doctor took the sample and asked me to wait in the adjacent room, which I did, for twenty-five minutes. Finally, he came walking, nervously I might add, into the room. My heart jumped, the room started to close in, I tightly gripped the seat, and wet myself once more. He started off by apologising to me, saying how sorry he was. I cried, even screamed I think. He tried to calm me down, but I just pushed him away, demanding to know how long I had left, to know what was wrong with me.

He started to yell, pleading for me to listen, saying that there had been a mistake with my first round of tests and that everything was clear—I was fine. I collapsed into the seat, relieved. I could feel my heart slowly returning to normal, and the room expanded again; everything once more was back to normal.

Then, calmly, he started explaining to me how there had been an accident in the labs. My test, he told me, hardly ever happens, and he was so sorry. I was relieved to be alive, to be given this second chance, and thanked him for being so thorough, that he had nothing to be sorry for. We shook hands. He apologised once more and said he’d let the girls at the front counter know I was on my way so I could arrange a paym…

That’s the last thing he said to me, as I drove a solid left hook into his jaw, knocking him to the ground, then stormed out. If I wanted to pay someone to scare me half to death, I’d still be married to my ex-wife.

    Caged Heat

It was Tuesday, well, I think it was Tuesday. To be honest, I’m not really sure what day it is anymore. But for the sake of telling this story, let’s say it was Tuesday when she first showed up. She entered my life looking like she had just walked out of a Victoria’s Secret catalogue, all hot and tempting.

Let me add, so you understand the complexities of my own twisted thought process, I’ve never been one to back away from anything, and she wasn’t going to be the first. So, I sucked in all the pride I could muster, which I’ll be honest with you was a damn swag load, grabbed my lunch from the cafeteria, and sat beside her, holding out my hand to introduce myself.

She smiled and said her name was Jenny. With a little poking and some well-practiced prodding, I found out she’d just moved to town with her parents from the mainland. Apparently, or so she said, her dad had taken a new job and forced the whole family to move down here with him. I could tell from the sharpness of her words and the pauses she used that she wasn’t so happy about it all. As the conversation flowed, she told me how she had to uproot her life, leave all her friends behind, and come here to live where she knew no one.

I’ll tell you, she didn’t really come across as the nicest person I’d ever had the pleasure of meeting. Her words were sharp, to the point, and almost a little rude, but not too rude. I mean, I got all that out of her in just one sitting, so she wasn’t some crazy arsed bitch, but at the same time, she wasn’t totally warm and fuzzy either. She was just a bit uppity. For me, it’s all about setting up that first impression, kicking a goal for the home team. Because once you’ve gone around the block a few times, you realise that’s what people remember most. Until, of course, you reveal your true self, your true motives, then nothing you do will fix that. Anyway, this isn’t about me, it’s about her. In the end, I couldn’t blame her for being on the defensive. I mean, she was a fish out of water and apparently, according to her, I was the first person besides the teachers who’d even bothered to talk to her.

I played it cool, said it was because she was hot, and a lot of people don’t know how to act around hot people. I got a laugh, which I was proud of. That’s when she asked me my name again. I knew from experience the home crowd would be cheering my efforts right now as the ball sailed straight through the middle of the goals. I proudly repeated my name, and for the next twenty minutes, we talked about things I didn’t really care to talk about—things she’d given up coming here, how angry she was at her dad, stuff like that. To be honest, if she wasn’t so hot, I would’ve gotten bored long before that. But there was something about the way her lips moved when she talked that really dragged me in, kept me sitting there like I was in some sort of weird arsed trance.

For the next few days, we had lunch together every day. I found more and more things that annoyed me about her. But no matter how annoying she was, I was still captivated by her smile, her eyes, the way her breasts moved with each breath, her tight little arse I didn’t get to see as much as I wanted to, and those lips, those goddamn lips.

She was standing at the school’s gate this morning, sending out vibes I was happy to answer. That’s when she sprung it on me—not THAT! She asked if I wanted to come meet her parents tonight. Before my jumbled words escaped my lips, she told me they were having a small party. Apparently, her father’s work colleagues were welcoming him to town, and because I was her only friend—yup, she said friend—I had to come to keep her company.

Now, this is one of those moments where all decision-making is removed from the upper extremities, and I let my privates do the deciding for me. I know, I know, how fucking stupid can one man be, but honestly, you don’t think about those sorts of things until you have the chance to reflect, when the blood returns from—well, you get the drift.

Sometimes reflection sadly comes too late, hindsight and all that jazz. You know, where you give yourself a number of different scenarios about how things should’ve played out. That’s what I’m doing right now, reflecting. Mainly because I’ve got nothing else to do here in the darkness.

That’s what it’s been like for the last hour or so, darkness, nothing but my own thoughts to keep me company. Finally, a door opens from up above, followed by footsteps, and I hear someone coming down the stairs. I know instantly it’s her; I can tell by the way she’s sort of marching, but not at the same time.

I let out a muffled laugh, not because I’m happy or excited to see her, but because I can imagine those perky tits moving up and down along with each cheek of her arse as she comes down the stairs.

Before I know it, she’s standing in front of the cage and kneels down, smiling like she’s just won the lottery. She starts talking, moving those lips up and down. They quiver, as do I. I don’t really know what she’s saying, only catching a few words here and there, but the gist of the conversation is that it won’t be long, and she’s sure her parents and their friends are really going to like me as much as she does. To be honest, it’s all lost on me, but the way she licked her lips when she stopped talking, the way her eyes widened, made me cry a little.

    Dance Off

As the song comes to an end, the crowd stops dancing and turns towards the stage, clapping vigorously for the band, Mars Rox and The Turtle Men. The dimly lit venue pulses with energy, the audience’s excitement palpable.

“You’re all too kind!” Mars Rox says, letting loose one of his trademark knee-wobbling smiles and a wink of the eye. “We’re going to take a small break and will be back in ten minutes or less, and then, my wayward hip-rockin’ friends, it’s dance-off time!” The crowd cheers with delight, as wolf whistles and screams of ‘Rox’ fill the room until generic music blares out through the speakers. Mars and his band shuffle off the stage through a side door to the back area.

As the band exits the stage, Mars heads down a dimly lit hallway, the echoes of applause still ringing in his ears. A voice calls out to him from the shadows. “Mister Rox, do you have a moment to spare for an old friend?”

Mars turns and smiles softly as he spies the owner of the voice, a woman in her late sixties. “Millie, my oh my, look at you, haven’t you grown?”

“I’m touched you remembered me, it’s been a long time,” she says with a smile. He quickly picks her up and hugs her tightly.

“It feels like days for me,” he says as he kisses her passionately on the lips. “You must tell me what you’ve been doing with yourself since we last stood here.”

“Getting old is all I’ve been doing, Mars. While you, you keep looking as handsome and young as ever,” she says with a laugh. He smiles.

“You look as beautiful as you always have, my sweet beautiful Millie,” he says as he runs a hand across her cheek and through her hair. “Are you staying for the second half? We’ve really got them in the palm of our hands tonight; it’s the best show we’ve played all year,” he says with a laugh.

“I wish I could. Maybe next show I’ll stay.”

His brow furrows, but then he smiles, “At least stay for the next song. Surely you’ve got time?”

“You ask me every year, and I always tell you the same answer.”

He pulls her close, gripping her by the buttocks and running his hand through her hair again, “And each year I’ll ask you the same question until you stay,” he says as he kisses her.

“I miss you,” she says as she runs a hand over his cheek and cuddles up closely.

He continues to stroke her hair, “I’m always with you, my love, and one day, one day soon, we’ll be together for the rest of time,” he says as they separate and stand facing each other, holding hands, and looking deeply into each other’s eyes. “Until then, we’ll always have next year to look forward to,” he says as he hands her a single red rose.

“Next year,” she says softly as she stands there in the dark rundown old hall, looks down at the rose in her hand, and smiles as a tear runs down her face. “We’ll always have next year.”

    Office Space

His hands tightly grip the desk’s sides as the rotating wheel on the computer screen before him spins relentlessly. A bead of sweat trickles down his forehead while he mumbles incoherent words through trembling lips as his eyes drift over the office implements scattered on his desktop. His breaths are laboured and desperate. A breath suddenly gets caught in his chest, and his eyes widen with terror. His brow furrows, and he clutches his throat with one hand while pounding his chest ferociously with the other as he tries to dislodge the breath. His face twists, and his teeth clench as he thumps his chest again and again, this time with more aggression until finally, a crack is heard, quickly followed by a popping sound from within his chest, and he gasps, taking desperate breath after desperate breath.

“F-F-Fuck,” he stammers as he doubles over, wincing in pain.

“Shit dude, did you just punch yourself in the face?” Andy asks with a jovial grunt and a playful slap on Danny’s back.

    “F-F-FUCK OFF!” Danny hisses.

Andy tilts his head and squints out of one eye as he raises his brow. “What the fuck did you just say to me?”

Danny rolls his lips back and bares his teeth. “N-N-Now’s n-n-not the FUCKING time, A-Andy.”

Andy shakes his head, stuffs his hands in his pockets, and rolls his eyes. “YOU DON’T GET TO TELL ME TO DO ANYTHING, BOY!” he spits as he grabs Danny by the hair and pulls him to his feet, only to have a pen thrust up into his throat. His eyes widen with surprise while a smile cascades across Danny’s trembling lips.

“Y-Y-Y-YOU’RE AN ARSEHOLE, ANDY! ALWAYS HAVE B-BEEN!” Danny screams as he pulls the pen free and stabs Andy in the throat again and again, showering himself in a sea of red.

Danny drops Andy’s twitching frame to the floor and turns back to the computer screen to find it still spinning. His hands clench into tightly bound fists, and he grits his teeth.

    “A-A-A-Are you m-m-m-mocking me?” he stammers as he takes several slow steps towards his desk. “D-D-D-Do you t-t-think it’s f-f-funny t-t-that I can’t g-g-get my w-w-work done b-b-because you w-w-won’t work?”

The computer does not respond; it only continues to display the rotating wheel.

“F-F-F-FINE! I-IF THAT’S H-HOW YOU WANT IT!” he spits as he grabs a cup of coffee from his desk and throws it in his face. He screams out in agony as the hot liquid scalds his flesh, then he drives the cup into his face, almost headbutting it as he does, smashing it against his skull. For a few nervous seconds, he stands there as he catches his breath. Then he grabs the keyboard and slaps it across his face several times before slamming it into the desk, splitting it in half and sending keys across the room. His face twists, and he tosses the keyboard’s remains to the side. Then, without a moment’s thought, he grabs the mouse and smashes it into his face. He does this again and again as the mouse shatters to pieces, tearing at his face. “IS THIS WHAT YOU WANT!” he screams.

The screen flickers, and the wheel distorts. An image appears on the screen: a face, his, smiling.

He laughs as the smile creeps further up his face. He grabs a knife from his desk and slices it up either side of his face, tearing a wide smile into his skin. He laughs maniacally. He slams his head into the desk, then starts punching himself without mercy. All the while, the wheel spins, and he laughs. Seconds soon pass into minutes, and as his punches continue, they begin to become more laboured until they are slaps, and then nothing, as he stands swaying in front of the still silent computer.

“A-A-A-Are you s-s-satisfied n-n-now? C-C-Can I p-p-p-please do s-s-some work?” he stammers through swollen, busted lips as the blood drips from his face and he falls to his knees. “C-C-C-Can I p-p-please?”

The screen flickers once again while the wheel still spins.

“F-F-Fuck,” he stammers as his one good eye falls upon the stapler.

    Khufu

    “Do you think it’s him?”

“We’ll know more once we get the fabric carbon-tested, but I think we’ve found him,” he says, beaming. “Point the flashlight over here, Mortimer; there seems to be an entrance to another room, obstructed by some of the artefacts.”

    “Another room? Are you sure?”

“Yes, yes, I’m almost certain. And I bet you’re thinking the same thing I am, aren’t you?”

“Please, Hunt, don’t talk to me as if I were one of your pupils. Everyone knows it was said he was buried with all his riches—a massive fortune in gold and jewels—and none of that is here, so…”

“So if this really is Khufu, then a secret room could be where they stored his treasure,” Hunt replies, wiping the sweat from his brow.

“You know they won’t let us take any of it for ourselves, don’t you?”

“If it is what we think it is, let them try and stop us,” he says with a nervous laugh. “Now help me move these effigies and other worthless trinkets; we should be able to make enough room for us to squeeze through.”

It takes the two of them over an hour to carve their way through the assorted figurines, vases, and effigies. Finally, they stand in front of the opening. Hunt turns to Mortimer, and they stare at each other, pride evident in their eyes.

Hunt holds out his hand. “Well, Mortimer, are you ready to be famous?”

Mortimer grabs his hand and shakes it vigorously. “Rich and famous,” he says with a smile. They both make their way down the long, narrow tunnel until it opens out into a large room, where they stand breathless.

“It was all true,” Hunt says, turning to Mortimer. “Every single bloody word!” He yells as he rushes forward, grabbing handfuls of gold coins and tossing them into the air. Mortimer’s torchlight suddenly veers left, then right, and crashes to the ground, leaving Hunt in darkness.

“Mortimer! The light, man, what happened to the goddamn light?” he yells. No reply comes; only a gurgling sound can be heard. He freezes in place, then is knocked to the ground. For several long, agonising moments, he lies there, waiting. Nothing moves, no sounds, not even the gurgling.

“Mortimer?” he whispers as he crawls around in the dark. Finally, after what seems like hours, his hand touches what he believes is the torch. But to his surprise, it’s covered in something thick and sticky. His heart races faster as he fumbles with it nervously, finally managing to switch it on. The light, now a golden red, sends him staggering backwards.

Lying on the floor a few feet away are the twisted, dismembered, bloody remains of Mortimer. Standing above him is what Hunt can only assume is the reanimated corpse of the great Pharaoh Khufu. His well-preserved, dried, decayed lips form a snarl, and his dark, empty eye sockets look towards him. Then it attacks.

    Hourglass

Edith moves through the little shop slowly, taking her time to look over each of the items with old, experienced eyes. Finally, she comes across one that grabs her attention. She picks up the small musical box and gives it a once-over before she eventually opens it. The box begins to play a soft little song, and she places a hand on her chest and smiles.

“You, you are coming home with me today,” she says softly as she closes the lid and makes her way to the counter. The young man smiles as she places the musical box down and pulls out her purse.

“It’s a fine choice,” he says.

“It is,” she replies, pulling out a hundred-dollar note. “I’m sorry, this is the smallest I have.”

The young man leans across the counter, his deep blue eyes shimmering in the light, showing more age than his face.

“I can see you’ve got a fine eye for true beauty. I’ve got an item that just arrived that you may be interested in.”

“I just want the music box. I allow myself one reward each week, and today it’s that little treasure,” she says, slowly caressing the box.

“What if I told you this item, the one I have underneath the counter, will change everything, your whole life?”

“I’m not interested, young man. I don’t have many days left in these old bones, and short of making me young again, nothing will change my life from what it is now. So please, the music box,” she says, placing the one-hundred-dollar note in his hands.

“What if I told you it could?”

She laughs. “I admire your courageous fight, but I’ve been around long enough to know there is no such thing.”

“Maybe you have, maybe you’ve seen everything there was ever meant to be seen, or maybe, just maybe, I’m telling you the truth. Underneath this desk, I have something that will tighten your skin, pull in your bottom, colour up your hair, and give you the energy you once had fifty years ago. Now, wouldn’t that be something to marvel over?”

“I said I’m not interested. The music box is all I need, nothing else.”

The man pulls a red, glowing egg-shaped object from the shelf beneath the counter and places it in front of her. Her eyes grow wide with wonderment.

“How old do you think I am?” he asks.

    “E-E-E-Excuse me?”

“I said, how old do you think I am? Go on, take a guess.”

“This is ridiculous. I will not ask such a question.”

“I’m seventy-five,” he says, leaning back from the counter with a smile.

    “I-I-I, I don’t believe you.”

“Scout’s honour,” he says, raising two fingers in the air, mimicking the scout’s call sign. “I can even prove it,” he says, pulling out his wallet and shuffling through its contents until finally pulling out a photo of two old men and holding it up before her. “This is a photo of my brother Randolph and me on his sixty-seventh birthday. I’m the one on the right,” he says proudly.

“Poppycock, it proves nothing,” she says, squinting at the photograph.

“Look at my left arm. I was born with a birthmark, and you can clearly see it in this photo,” he says, pointing out the red blur on the man’s arm. He then pulls up his left sleeve to reveal the same red blur on his. The woman’s mouth drops open and she clutches her chest.

    “I-I-I-Impossible,” she says.

“Is it, or is it just that you choose to believe it’s impossible?” he says with a smile.

    “H-H-How, how does it work?”

“You place it under your bed at night, and over the course of a week or more, depending, of course, on how young you wish to be, it slowly sucks the age from you as you sleep.”

    “How much?”

    “Two hundred dollars.”

“That seems awfully cheap for something so wonderful.”

“Call it a gift, of a sort. You see, it only works once for every person, so it’s worthless to me now.”

She quickly grabs another hundred-dollar note from her purse, places it in his hands, grabs the object from the counter, and heads towards the exit.

“Miss, did you still want th….” But he soon realises she cares little for the music box now and is out the door and gone. On her way out, she almost knocks over an elderly gentleman who storms into the shop and slams a bag down onto the counter.

“Where’s the young girl who works here?”

    “Young girl?”

“Yes, are you deaf? A young girl was working here when I came in last month to buy a present for my wife’s eightieth birthday, and she convinced me to buy this shoddy piece of crap.”

“I’m sorry, sir, but only my grandfather and I work in this shop. Is there a chance you could be confused about the location of the shop?”

“I’m bloody certain it was here. She sold me this piece of garbage for five hundred dollars, promised me miracles, promised me it would make us young again, and all it did was sweet fuck all,” he says, pulling out a red, glowing egg-shaped object from the bag.

“Eight years, eight fucking years, and not one word, not one FUCKING word! And now, NOW you come here, to my HOME of all places, expecting me to give you money! ME, give YOU money? Has it been so long you’ve forgotten? Have you, at some stage of your worldly travels, hit your head? Because if you had, that would explain why you’d think coming to me, ME of all people, asking for money, would be a good idea! I won’t do it, Conrad, I just won’t!”

“Mortimer, please, you completely misunderstand where I’m coming from. I’m not giving you a choice in the matter; this is not a negotiation. It’s rather simple, really. You either pay the money, or we have problems. And by me saying we, I actually mean you will be the one with the problem, one that you’ll not really recover from.”

“Threats will do little against me! How dare you think s….”

“FUCK YOU! The money, Mortimer, before this becomes more than just a conversation,” Conrad says with a wry smile.

Leaping to his feet and thrusting a pointed finger towards the door, Mortimer yells, “Get out and never set foot before me again!”

    “NO!”

“W-W-What? WHAT did you just say?”

“I’m pretty sure you heard what I said. But if you missed it, if you’re slightly hard of hearing, I said NO! I’m not going anywhere.”

“H-H-H-How, how dare you. GET OUT NOW! Get out before I do something we can both never come back from!”

“The snake reveals his true nature. Now, who’s the one threatening who?”

Mortimer charges towards Conrad, his eyes wild with anger, his face twisted and dark. A trail of saliva flows from the corner of his mouth. The two hit each other in a fury of fists, blood, and screams. Conrad drives a knee up into Mortimer’s face, sending him reeling backward, followed by a sea of red. He crashes to the ground, and within moments, Conrad is upon him, a knife at his throat.

“Don’t make me do this, for I will not falter, I will not give mercy. Give me what I ask, or I will take it after I remove your head!”

“THEN DO IT! Because that’s the only way you’ll get anything from me, when I’m dead and buried!” he yells, spitting a wad of blood into Conrad’s face.

“Someday, when we meet again, I hope you will forgive me for this,” Conrad says softly, as he slices the blade across his throat.

“R-R-Rot in hell, you’re no SON OF MINE!” he yells, as his blood quickly begins to fill his throat, choking him, as Conrad smiles.

“Funny you should say that, old man, because that was the other thing I wanted to talk to you about.”

    The Kids Love It

The car comes to a screeching halt, smashing into the side of another, forcing it off the road and into a ditch. Voices cry out, followed by an explosion. He stands overlooking the carnage, watching with bewildered eyes. His bottom lip quivers as one of his hands slowly reaches up and grasps his chest. The burning sensation that had coursed through his body only seconds ago is now non-existent. But he doesn’t question why; he knows the reason, for he can see it in his own dead, empty eyes that stare towards him.

“OKAY, THAT’S A WRAP!” he hears yelled a few feet away. Slowly, he casts his eyes towards seven men he hadn’t noticed before, standing and watching with what looks like cameras, microphones, and other filming equipment.

    “H-H-H-Hello?” he says softly.

One of the men looks over to him, nods and smiles, then turns back to packing up his equipment.

“HELLO?” he says again, louder this time.

“Don’t be put off by Klause. He’s one of those artists,” a voice says from behind him. He turns to face a skinny man in his mid-thirties with long, scraggly hair, holding what looks to be a boom microphone. “For him, it’s all about getting the best shots, the right lighting, the angles, all that big money stuff. He’s not about the process, the people, or their experiences anymore. Which is such a shame. He was great once, but now, with all the techno kids coming through who like those big explosions, he’s become distant to it all. But just so you know, I loved your work.”

“W-W-What’s happening? Is this a dream?”

The man laughs. “That’s such a you thing to say,” he says, slapping Simon on the back. “You’re dead, man. Look at you. There’s no coming back from that,” he says, pointing towards the burning car wreckage.

Simon looks back over into his dead eyes once more. “Shit….” he mutters, then finds himself sitting in a white corridor. Doors run along one side, and seats along the other.

“W-W-W-What the fu….” he doesn’t finish his sentence as the door in front of him opens and an elderly gentleman steps out, looking at him.

“Simon, please, if you don’t mind joining me,” he says, gesturing for Simon to enter the room. Nervously, he stands up and enters the room.

“I believe you have a lot of questions,” the man says.

“Y-Yeah, like, what the fuck is going on?”

The man’s face goes red, and he raises a hand towards Simon. “Please, there is no need for cussing, not here, in His place.”

“Y-Y-You’re talking about God? I-I-I, I mean, I get it, I know I’m dead. This, this is heaven, right?”

The man smiles and gestures towards the only seat in the room. “Those answers will come soon enough, but at this present time, we have something for you to watch, something you might find eye-opening. We got the idea from Facebook,” he says with a broad smile. “The kids love it,” he says as he leaves the room.

Simon uneasily shuffles in the chair while the room fades to black. A soft, upbeat music track begins to play as a screen appears before him with the words ‘In A Heartbeat: The Simon Westward Story.’

    A Desperate Plea

The silken smile that was moments ago woven across her lips now melts like ice cream in the heat, dripping down its waffle cone. In contrast, the smile on Gerard’s face grows wider and prouder with each passing moment, as does his engorged penis, standing firmer with each beat of his overly excited heart.

“W-W-What?” she stammers through trembling lips, her eyes bathing in a growing sea of tears.

“I said, have you heard the word ‘irrumatio’ before?” he hisses, leaning in closer to her, his smile now covering almost half his face while his right hand grips his throbbing cock. “I’d say from the desperation in your voice that you have!” he whispers menacingly, thick wads of saliva dripping from his lips.

“I-I-I,” she stammers, closing her eyes tightly and taking a deep breath before clenching her teeth as she exhales. “I-I, I didn’t mean that,” she says, shaking her head and opening her bloodshot eyes wide. “I meant the part before that.”

“Oh,” he cackles wildly, slapping his knee. “How presumptuous of me to assume so much from you! I’ve totally misread the room. Lucky it’s just your life I’m playing with and not sitting at a table in Vegas, betting everything I own just to make ends meet,” he scoffs smugly.

“W-W-Why me? W-W-What did I-I do to you?” she screams, tears now streaming down her face, washing a trail through the blood and dirt that cover her swollen red cheeks.

The corners of his smile curl, and his tongue paints his lips with an ample lashing of saliva. “Because you were there,” he proudly beams before bursting into the kind of maniacal laughter you hear in old cartoons.

“P-P-Please! I’ll do anything! I’ll let you do anything!” she cries, grabbing his cock and jerking it wildly, only for him to thrust her away.

“HOW DARE YOU!” he bellows, launching himself to his feet, looking down upon her with twisted, trembling lips. “I-I-I, I CANNOT BE BOUGHT WITH SEXUAL FAVOURS, FOR YOU ARE FAR TOO ALIVE FOR THAT, MY DEAR!”

“P-P-Please! There must be something that will sway you to let me live! A-Anything!” she begs, falling in a sobbing heap before him.

His lips curl once more, and his eyes grow wide with excitement. “More,” he purrs.

“M-M-More?” she whispers through trembling lips.

“Yes, more,” he says with malice. “Give me more, and I will let you be free.”

“H-How can I-I-I get you more?”

His smile cuts the air. “Call them, bring them here, and I will set you free.”

    “W-W-Who do I call?”

“Your friends, the ones you were with at the club. Call them here, and I will set you free.”

Her eyes grow wide with panic as a fresh sea of tears streams down her face. “Y-You can’t,” she stammers, taking a deep desperate breath. “Y-You honestly don’t think I-I would give you my friends’ lives in exchange for my own?”

“I don’t really care,” he says with a twisted wry smile. “Either you bring me more to take your place, or I cut your head from your shoulders here and now, and fuck it like I was going to before you started this infernal desperate conversation to save your life.”

“I-I-I, I CAN’T DO WHAT YOU ASK!” she screams.

“Then, don’t,” he says with a broad grin, slicing her head cleanly from her shoulders.

    Private Session

She places her phone on the table, stretches her arms into the air, and lets out a long, drawn-out yawn before pulling the blanket off from around her legs and walking over to a small bench that makes up the better part of her kitchen. She picks up a strawberry from a plate and stuffs it in her mouth, biting down as a smile grows on her lips. She grabs the plate, then quickly settles back down on the couch, opening a laptop that sits on the table. She types an address into the web browser and waits for a few moments as the site loads, then logs into the website, opens her cam, and sits back, taking a bite from another strawberry as she waits. Her waiting isn’t long, as an icon at the top of the screen flashes, and she leans in, smiling.

‘You’re back :)’ appears on the screen.

“I told you I would be,” she says with a smile.

    ‘I’ve been waiting for you.’

“I hope not too long. I know how you can get if you wait too long,” she says with a giggle.

‘I don’t mind waiting for you. You’re the highlight of my day.’

“You’re the highlight of mine,” she says with a smile. “So, do you wanna play?”

‘Isn’t that why we’re both here?’

“Well, lover boy, you know what to do,” she says, pointing a finger towards the private session button on the screen.

‘Way ahead of you.’ The screen shifts from a plain border to a golden one.

“Oh honey, you know what I like. Do you want the girls out? They’ve missed you,” she says as she sticks one of her fingers in her mouth and sucks it.

‘I’ve missed them. I’m already hard thinking about them.’

“Well, I hope you already have him out, because he’s about to have some fun,” she says as she pulls off her top, exposing her breasts. She squeezes them together, grabbing one in her hand, and pulls it towards her face to lick the nipple. “See, they missed you,” she says as she lightly bites on the nipple and flicks it with her tongue.

‘Honey, he’s out. Your pants, show me everything.’

“Oh lover, you know what to say,” she says as she jumps up and rips her panties off. Quickly, she sits back on the couch and spreads her legs so he can get a good view. “I shaved just for you,” she says as she runs her fingers gently around her opening.

‘Stick a finger in, honey. Do it for me. Close your eyes and think it’s my cock. Let me cum inside you.’

“Oh yeah, lover, put it in me,” she says as she slips a finger inside, letting out a moan as she begins rubbing herself. “Can you feel it? Can you feel how wet I am?”

    ‘You’re so wet, honey!’

‘I’m so close. Keep rubbing it. I want you to cum with me.’

“Oh baby, you know what I like. Harder, do it to me harder!”

‘That’s it, you’re almost there. I can feel it. Can you feel me? I’m so hard, so close.’

“I can, it’s so hard. I can feel it throbbing. Oh god, honey, I’m going to explode!” she screams.

‘I want you on top of me now. I want us to cum together.’

She leaps up from the couch and runs into the bedroom, leaping onto the bed where he lies and quickly mounts him.

“Oh baby, I’m cumming! OH BABY!” she yells as she lets out a scream. He begins thrusting harder and faster into her before he lets out a scream as well, and she collapses on top of him. For a few moments, they lie there, hearts beating as one, racing, sweat pouring down their bodies, until she lifts her head and kisses him on the nose.

“And that’s why you’re my favourite,” she says with a giggle.

    My Name

“Damn it, Damien, let them go, they’re innocent!”

“Never! No one is innocent! Every one of these fucks, every single fucking one, has sin on their souls, and they’ll all pay the price. So is my word, so it shall be!” he says, gripping the blade tightly as he slashes it into the air violently, coming to a stop in front of his face. Sweat trickles down his brow, and his eyes widen as he stares into Damien’s hateful gaze. Slowly, he reaches a nervous hand up to the blade and pushes it away.

“Steady on there, sunshine. I’m not the enemy here.”

“Are you sure?” Damien demanded, his voice trembling with anger. “Because you goddamn sound like it. We went into this on the same page, with the same designs, and now you side with the sinners?”

“I don’t side with the sinners. I’m just saying these are kids, virgins, masturbators at best. They haven’t sinned, not really. Their dirt is lightweight, cleanable. They deserve a chance to be redeemed, to wash their sins away, like we all did as we became adults.”

“They deserve my blade, nothing less. A sin is a sin, no matter what age. Right and wrong is still something they know, they understand. If we let them walk, what message is that sending to the others? What standards are being set? They must face their sins. They must pay!” he says, as he turns to the three boys, all cowering before him.

    “Look inside them, see what…”

“I see sinners, sinners who’ll only be in front of my blade again if I let them go. What I do today, I do to save the future! I do because that is our role, that is what we are here for, to judge.”

“The fuck? You can’t know, you can’t see what they’ll become, you can only guess! Let them go, let them prove you wrong.”

One of the boys casts a quick glance up at him and then back down. “We’re so fucked, he’s going to kill us if we don’t do something,” he hisses to the other two.

“Do fucking what? He’s bigger, faster, and has a fucking sword. What can we do to stop him?”

“I don’t know, but we have to do something, anything. FUCK! We need to make our move now, while he’s arguing with himself,” he says, as he quickly looks up again, into Damien’s bloodshot eyes, his lips twisted into a snarl.

“Guess who won the argument?” he growls as he attacks.

    Change

He sits, staring at the four glasses in front of him and blinks several times before reaching out in an attempt to pick one up. He fails miserably and crashes to the floor in a heap.

“Show’s over, Macready. Go home!” a voice says from above him. Slowly and awkwardly, he pulls himself to his feet using the stool as leverage. He looks over at the barman, swaying from side to side, trying to focus his vision.

“Fuck you, Joe. I’m still good,” he slurs.

“Bullshit. That’s the second time in the last five minutes you’ve pancaked to the floor. Go home! Cathy’s going to be pissed at you already. Don’t make it worse.”

“Don’t act like you fucking know me. Don’t act like some high and mighty son of a bitch. If you don’t serve me, I’ll find somewhere else that will.”

“Don’t you think you’re being a bit overdramatic? He’s just trying to help,” a husky voice whispers in his ear. He spins around in a volatile loop, searching the room with half-closed eyes for the owner of the voice.

“W-W-Who the fuck! Who the FUCK do you think you are?” he yells to the nearly empty room. Hands tightly grip his shoulders and shove him forward.

“Get the fuck out, and don’t bother showing your face around here for a while. Next time, I’ll do more than ruffle your clothes, you little prick,” Joe says as Macready is pushed through the doorway and crashes onto the footpath outside. He scrambles to his feet like a baby giraffe first learning to walk. The footpath lashes out at him violently, smashing him in the face. He lies there, feeling saliva flow from his mouth, forming a puddle beneath him. After a few moments, he tries to pick himself up from the ground, this time with more grace and determination. Eventually, he steadies himself on the side of the building and grips his side as a sharp shot of pain rips through him. He lunges forward and vomits five hours’ worth of alcohol into the gutter, then clumsily wipes his mouth with the sleeve of his jacket.

“Fucking cunts!” he mumbles under his breath as he takes an uneasy step forward.

“You’re pathetic,” a voice hisses into his ear. He spins around in fright, but once again, there is no one there.

“W-W-W-Who the fuck are you?” he yells as he continues to spin uncontrollably until he crashes into the wall and once more to the footpath. When he finally opens his eyes again, he finds himself tightly bound and chained in a dark, cold room. Instantly, he struggles for freedom, his heart racing in panic. Then he notices he is not alone, as a figure hides in the darkness.

“W-W-W-Who the fuck are you? W-W-What do you want?” he yells.

“I don’t want anything from you, you pathetic piece of shit. And who I am, well,” he says, walking out of the shadows. Macready’s jaw drops open, and his eyes widen as he stares at himself. “I’m you, or, in a few moments, I will be.”

“W-W-W-What the fuck are you talking about? W-W-Who are you?”

He laughs, grabbing Macready by the hair and shaking his head vigorously.

“I’m your replacement, Simon. Seems you’ve worn out your welcome, and it’s time for a change.”

“W-W-What? What are you talking about? What’s fucking going on?”

He laughs again and smiles, a wide, toothy smile. “Don’t worry, sugar puff. Neither of us will remember this in the morning, and by neither of us, I mean me. Because unlike me, you’ll be nothing but a series of mistakes that I will atone for. It’s how it works. Change being for the better and all that.”
