“Tough day?” The man standing next to him says enthusiastically.
Nathan grumbles his reply.
The man smiles broadly as he slaps him on the back, and laughs. “The names Paul, and I know exactly how you feel. Wife drag you here?”
Nathan sighs as he shakes off and zips up.

Sometimes Flies Are Too Fast – 100 Word Microfiction Short Story
I entered a short story competition that required me to write a 100 word short story in 24 hours. The story needed to meet three things, a theme (Comedy), a situation (Climbing a Mountain) and a word that needed to be used (Radar). It took me a while to find the right idea, and get it to work in a way I was happy with, but that’s not saying I didn’t enjoy the process, and the stories that didn’t make the cut. So, for the sake of creativity, here is the rejected 100 word stories I wrote..

Sometimes Flies Are Too Fast
“I think this whole thing is only partway into it’s first trimester, so we shouldn’t even begin holding our breath for some sort of result just yet.” Saffron says with a broad smile upon her face.
“It’s not a fucking pregnancy Saff, it’s a foreboding end to all the things we’ve come to expect as the one dominant race.”
She laughs. “Some dominant race we are, forced up into the mountains, without radar or GPS, no coffee, and no fucking POP-TARTS! So if I want to refer to this fucking thing like I would a pregnancy, I bloody well will!”

The Fairfax Confinement
“Wichita was the last place I saw any of them alive, just before it all started.”
Silka laughs softly to himself, “You know it started long before any government told us it was happening? Reports talk of mass graves found using sonic radar, and some of the graves were months older than original estimates.”
“You telling me old fire engine Donny knew what was happening well before he let on?”
”Between you, me and these mountains, I’ve heard that old Donny hasn’t just got a vaccine, I’ve heard he’s got a mother fucking cure.”
“A cure?”
“Yup, nuclear fucking weapons!”

He Who Dared The Climb
“Up, are you sure that’s what we should be doing?”
“Of course I’m sure, up is the only way we can proceed. We can’t go down, the radar shows too many possible inaccuracies that it cannot account for. We climb up, and we keep climbing until we are well out of their bloody reach.” Jethro hisses through clenched teeth.
“You can’t be serious! I’d rather face them, than face whatever’s up there!” Sam yells, pointing towards the mountain top.
Jethro raises a revolver and smiles, “There are grander things to be fearful of out there, than what you can’t see!” -

Shit, I even agreed to come climb this stupid fucking mountain with you because no one else would, and now we’re fucking lost!”

“I’d be done a lot quicker if you and your radar ears went further up the mountain, so I finish this in peace!”
“Stage fright?”
“That pretty much sums it up. I’ve never been one of those guys who could go, just anywhere. It’s either my toilet, or a well-ventilated toilet that has no one anywhere n-n-nnear the immediate v-v-vvicinityyyyy!” He stammers as he lets rip with an explosive wet fart. -

“Are you talking about this virus?”
“Aren’t they all?”
“We weren’t until now, so there must be others.”
“You seek others that live outside the radar of society, existing beyond the doorway of liquid information.”
“Liquid information? Are you making up phrases now?”

David says before he empties the bottle into his awaiting mouth.

“You’re seriously going to sit there, in your current predicament, and argue with me?”
“I-I-I-I, I-m not arguing with you, I’m just saying I’d never find myself in that sort of situation.”
“So,” David says as he freely waves his revolver around. “You’re stuck up here, halfway up this god damn mountain, without any sort of GPS or radar, and you’re arguing semantics with the guy who may, or may not kill you. Are you sure, you’re not slightly unhinged?” -

Kevin grips the rocks tightly as he pulls himself up the mountains side, looking over his shoulder proudly at the wilderness far below. “You couldn’t make your way out of a paper bag with a radar,” he hisses underneath his breath as he reaches out and pulls himself up higher, laughing softly to himself.

“What the hell kid, you blow a tyre or something?” Patton calls out from the front.
“If I had wheels, I would’ve been up this mountain a long time ago, instead of wasting time walking up this sorry excuse for a track. Surely there’s an easier way up?”
“You saw the radar images just like I did. There ain’t no other way up this damn mountain, but the way we’re going. So if you haven’t lost a wheel, get up and let’s keep moving!” -

“You don’t need to tell me twice, I’m in total agreeance there.” Butch says as he stares up towards the mountains summit.
“Really?”
“I’m pretty sure a radar could see this one not working out.”

She thrusts out her bottom lip. “That’s such a mean thing to say! I was only trying to make this climb fun, but you just want to be the responsible adult!” she says in a gruff imitation voice of his.
“Don’t try and paint me as the bad guy! The radar showed something crash up in these mountains, and we have to locate whatever it is, and deal with it, not playing fucking games!” -

Jake holds his hands in the air, smiling nervously. “I was just thinking outside the box, and I never meant for it to come across as if I was making fun of you. If it did, I am sorry for that, but you are a bit of a cunt!”
