“They are the thing of dreams, nightmares in fact, and, to know that they exist, scare the fucking hell out of me,” she says, looking over at the young man who sits across from her.
“Then, what do we do? Who do we tell that’ll believe us?”
“We tell no one, and we do the same, let’s just leave this place, get far away, and never look back.”
“And then what?”
“What do you mean and then what? We live, that’s all that matters isn’t it?”
“But don’t you think eventually, one day they’ll find us again, and what do we do then? Run and hide, pretty sure eventually they’ll be nowhere to go, nowhere to run, and we’ll have to face what we’ve done.”
“So what, you think we should stay and fight?”
“I’d rather do it now, while I’m still able to.”
“Yeah, well, I’d rather live a bit longer, enjoy a few more years of breathing than to face them now,” she says, looking away, staring out of the window.
“You seriously can’t mean that?”
“Why not? Why can’t we run?”
“Because we started this, we brought those things to life, we owe it…”
“We don’t owe anyone anything!” She says, biting into her bottom lip, and slamming a fist into the wall. “We never made these things, they always were, we, we just let them out, accidentally mind you, if it wasn’t us, it would have been someone else, so none of this is our fault, we just happened to be in the wrong place at the right time.”
“That’s bullshit, we are responsible Cathy, we let them out, we have to put them back.”
“And how the fuck are we supposed to do that, the box is deep in the heart of where they are, we’d die before we even got close, it’ll never work.”
“We have to do something, if we don’t, if we just run, everyone we love will, well, they’ll die, can you live with that?”
“As long as it means living, I can,” says, looking back at him, as a tear runs down her face.
“Really? Is that what you really feel?”
She stares at him for a few moments, “Yes.”
“Then,” he says as he gets to his feet. “Then, let’s run, let’s run until there’s nowhere else left to run, until the edge of the world and beyond, and then, when they do come for us, when they do finally force us to make a stand, we’ll do it together,” he says, holding out his hand.
“Together,” she says.
