    You Had Me at Hello

“It was more of a fascination than anything else, a retardation of the synaptic thread that shuffled signals from one part of the brain to the other. Dying from the inside out.”

“Isn’t that what we’ve always done?”

“Our body’s inner workings naturally break down, that is true, but this is our mind sabotaging us on a molecular level, and that’s something entirely different. The brain instructs organs to shut down, one after the other—until all that is running is enough to keep the brain supplied with the nutrients it needs to survive, but that doesn’t last for long.”

“Why doesn’t it reactivate the organs it shut down to reverse the situation? All early test subjects show that that ability is at their disposal.”

He smiles broadly. “That’s the fucking amazing thing about this, lady. She’s as cunning as she is beautiful. One of the fundamental baseline traits of the infection is the overarching confidence it gives to the brain by convincing it into thinking it is really in control, when it’s not. By allowing it to believe what it is doing is reversible, the brain gets cocky and plays right into her hands.”

“You make it sound like it’s actually living, breathing with a mind of its own.”

    “What if it was?”

    “Don’t be daft,” he scoffs.

“I’m not being daft,” he snaps back, as his expression changes from warm to cold in an instant. He pulls a wad of USB drives from his pocket and slaps them on the desk between them. “Eighty-seven out of the last one hundred infected patients that were sent down to the intensive care ward showed remarkably similar traits on sixteen different tests—and all one hundred communicated across a period of three weeks in one conversation.”

    “BULLSHIT!”

“It’s all there in unedited glory.”

He looks down at the USBs, then up at Rohan. “One conversation?”

Rohan smiles broadly and slaps the desk. “One fucking conversation.”

“H-H-How the fuck is this possible?” he stammers.

    “It’s mother-fucking aliens!”

    “A-A-Aliens?” Charles stammers.

    “Yup, they told me themselves.”

“I don’t know, man, you were stretching it with one conversation, but now adding aliens, I’m not sure anymore.”

“Just watch the recording, you’ll understand it all, and then you can decide if it’s fact or fiction.”

He looks down at the USBs again and swallows. “How many hours did you say are on there?”

    “Around six hundred hours.”

“FUCK that, there’s no way I am sitting through six hundred hours of boring footage. Don’t you have a best-of collection?”

Rohan raises an eyebrow curiously. “Wouldn’t that defeat the purpose of authentication?”

“Maybe, but there’s no way I’m going to waste three weeks just to turn around and tell you I don’t believe a word of it.”

“BUT IF YOU TAKE THE TIME AND SEE WH—”

Charles raises a hand in protest—bringing Rohan to a grinding halt. “Mate, I know they say seeing is believing, but I gotta say this with as much honesty as I can. If there isn’t anything you can show me in under five minutes, then I just don’t give a shit what’s the truth.”

    Names Petrified in Your Hands

“How many times have I told you not to call me by that name?”

“I’m sorry, okay? It’s just a force of habit. You do something for so long, you ju—”

“I don’t care. My name is Simone now, not Peter. It’s about respecting who I am, not who I was!”

“Don’t you dare throw that in my face and think it’s okay. Out of everyone, I’ve been your biggest supporter since you began this journey. So sue me, I slipped up! But we’ve known each other for thirty-six years, and for thirty-five and three-quarters of those years, I’ve known you as Peter. So forgive my simple, honest mistake and just answer the fucking question I asked!”

“Don’t do that. Don’t brush this aside like it was nothing. I can see the looks you give me. The disgust you feel is written all over your face. So why don’t you just say what you really want to say? Just get it off your chest so we can move past it.”

“What the fuck? Are you seriously trying to make this into something?”

“I’m not the one who started it. You! You’re the one who disrespected my name, the one I chose—not the name given to me by those things.”

“Those things? Are you talking about your parents?”

“Yeah, those sons of bitches. They gave me that name for fun, to taunt me, to keep me under their thumb. But I broke free. I showed them. I reclaimed who I am!”

“How in the fucking hell did them calling you ‘Peter’ make fun of you?”

“Don’t! You wouldn’t understand. You wouldn’t be able to. You’re just like they were—bitter, wrong, and jealous. Because I’m destined for great things.”

“P… Simone, we’re two-bit thugs. We collect gambling debts for one of the biggest bookies in the city. We’re not really going to be anything more than what we are, and you… well, your skills are, for lack of a better word, borderline psychotic.”

“Are you trying to tell me I belong in the nut house?”

“I’m not trying to tell you anything. I’m just saying you’re a few screws short of a few scre—”
A fist crashes into his face. His nose explodes, blood gushing forth. He rushes into the bathroom, grabs a towel, presses it tightly against his nose, and tilts his head back.
“You fucking freak! What the fuck did you do that for?”

“Because you wouldn’t shut your big mouth. You’re lucky that’s all I did!”

“When the boss finds out, he’s going to go ballistic. God, you’re a fucking moron.”

    “Don’t bring God into it.”

“What the fuck are you on about now?” he says, staring at his reflection in the mirror, pressing the towel against his face.

“I said don’t bring God into the conversation, that’s so—”
“Just shut up and pass me the other towel,” he says, grabbing the towel from the rack near the door and pressing it against his face. “I can’t believe you fucking hit me,” he mutters, staring at his reflection in the mirror.

“It’s easy, Simon. You just put the fucking knife to her throat, and you slice it across. It’s that fucking simple—you know how it works!”

Simon looks down at the girl, whose hair he tightly grips in one hand, then to the knife in his other hand, and finally up at him. “But she’s done nothing wrong. She’s innocent.”

“Just fucking do it! Now’s not the time to get scared.”

“I’m not scared, it’s just… well, it’s wrong, that’s what it is,” Simon says as he releases his hold on the girl, and she crumbles to the ground in tears.

“Wrong? Is that your idea of a joke? Of course it’s fucking wrong—that’s why we’re here: to spread the anarchy, to stick it to the fucks upstairs, and all that jazz. Why the hell do you think we’re here? They’ve all gotta pay!”

    “Even the innocent?”

    “Especially the innocent.”

“That’s not what I signed up for. That’s not what this is all supposed to be about, and I won’t be a party to it!”

McGregor raises a revolver and aims it towards Simon. “You’re either with us, or you’re with them. And if you are, then you have to pay the same price,” he says, lowering the revolver and firing two shots into the girl. Simon freezes in place. He feels his body break out in a sweat, and a nervous trembling starts to shake its way through his legs, creeping up towards his bladder. McGregor raises the revolver back towards Simon. His face is now dark and mysterious—not the man Simon had grown up with, not the friend he thought had his back.

“What the fuck is going on, McGregor? This isn’t you. This isn’t what we started this all for.”

“Fuck you! Why come along, then, if you weren’t ready to really commit one hundred percent to the cause?”

“I am committed, but this isn’t what we’re about. This is wrong. She was innocent!”

“Fuck you. You’ve never been committed. All you’ve done is sit in your basement writing propaganda manifestos, spreading the word of our ways. You’ve become blind. You’ve forgotten where the true power of our people lies. I’ve been out in the trenches, taking names, waving the flag. And now you’re finally out here, doing what everyone else has been doing since the beginning, and what? You suddenly realise you don’t want to do it anymore? You’re pathetic. I can’t believe I looked up to you. I can’t believe any of us did.”

“Then do it. See where you’ll be without me,” Simon says, standing tall and tightly closing his eyes.

    “For the cause!” McGregor shouts.

Two shots explode to life. Simon readies himself for the impact, but it never comes. After several moments, he nervously opens his eyes to find McGregor face down in a pool of blood, with two brothers of the cause standing over him.

“I’m tired of the killing as well,” one of them says, as they both place their guns on the ground. They look towards Simon. “Show us what this cause is really about. Show us how we can win without bloodshed.”

“Then, let’s begin again,” Simon says, allowing himself to smile as he darts one last look at McGregor’s body.

    Goodbye To 2020TOO

    And we’re done…

2020TOO is now a thing of the past, memories forgotten already, much like many of those that have been and gone before this day, and may will be gone after.

We have ventured down a turmoiled road, that wasn’t as smooth as we had hoped.

Many ideas became lost in the mix of what was, and what is, with some not even making it to print or paper.

But regardless of all that, the core idea was completed without fail.

For 365 days something new was created each day.

    Ideas were born.

    Stories were told.

    Blood was spilt.

and most importantly, fun was had!

What does 2023 hold for us all, only time will tell, but to see it out as we kiss our shattered reflection into the new year, I share with you a couple of the short stories that have made themselves part of our last journey for 2022, the kiss for new year’s eve.

Until next time, be you, because you hold the key to your own existence, and that makes you a god in your world, never let anyone else tell you different.

    a sickness not yet known,
    familiuarity singled out in stone,
    we sought,
    yet asked no name,
    we came here to ask,
    silent was our greeting,
    spurned on with tortue,

    where our fates end,
    and our forever’s begin…
