Pinky Swear – 100 Word Microfiction Short Story

I entered a short story competition that required me to write a 100 word short story in 24 hours. The story needed to meet three things, a theme (Comedy), a situation (Climbing a Mountain) and a word that needed to be used (Radar). It took me a while to find the right idea, and get it to work in a way I was happy with, but that’s not saying I didn’t enjoy the process,  and the stories that didn’t make the cut. So, for the sake of creativity, here is the rejected 100 word stories I wrote..

    Pinky Swear

“Pinky swear!” Charlotte says as she sticks her hand out, extending her little finger towards Jason.
“I’m not fucking pinky swearing! We’re adults, not three-year old’s!”
She thrusts out her bottom lip. “That’s such a mean thing to say! I was only trying to make this climb fun, but you just want to be the responsible adult!” she says in a gruff imitation voice of his.
“Don’t try and paint me as the bad guy! The radar showed something crash up in these mountains, and we have to locate whatever it is, and deal with it, not playing fucking games!”

    A Tall Tale Told

Steven kneels down and runs his hands through a small pile of leaves that lie on the ground, before letting out a stuttered breath.
    “Anything?” Winston asks.
“They came through here less than an hour ago. There are four of them, three males and a female. The girls seems to be injured.”
Winston turns to Kyle with a broad smile upon his face, “See, he’s worth every fucking penny. Tell me what radar could give that information?”
“Shit, I could’ve given you the same information,” Kyle says, pointing towards the four figures that climb the mountain that towers over them.

“We’ve been marching for days, through streets lined with gold, yet we have not stopped once. Now, even as your men lie dying, you still want to venture up this mountain, into a darkness that even a radar could not see through. Please Sabastian, Stop this madness.”
Sabastian casts a stony glance to Hershaw and smiles, before looking back towards the mountain.
“You give me demands as if you hold all the cards, yet you do it without asking questions, so in reality you hold nothing. Instead of demanding an ending of this journey, why don’t you ask me why.”

“It’s a catastrophe, plain and simple! We’re out in the middle of nowhere, stuck halfway up this god forsaken mountain, and you can’t even raise someone on the fucking radar phone. So you can’t really blame me from overreacting!” Dougan says with a ferociousness few have ever seen from him before.
Jake holds his hands in the air, smiling nervously. “I was just thinking outside the box, and I never meant for it to come across as if I was making fun of you. If it did, I am sorry for that, but you are a bit of a cunt!”

“When we danced, we dance with a vigour that I haven’t found in another since that day. Please allow me one last opportunity to do that before the end swallows my self.”
“You have such a childish attitude to things, that at times makes my skin crawl. But if you help, and stop hindering our journey up this mountain, I’ll dance with you again.” She says with an awkward smile.
“I-I-I, I’ve done nothing but assist. I couldn’t have known the radar equipment I purchased only spoke in mandarin, had I known that, I wouldn’t have left them positive feedback.”

“A simple question, answered in the most god awful way I’ve ever had a question answered. It’s a simple question to answer. Yes or no will suffice, there doesn’t need to be any flair or pomp done!”
Jarvis kicks a rock away lazily as he stares at the ground, avoiding eye contact with his father.
“Jarvis, for the love of god! We’re halfway up this god damn mountain, and all I need to know is if you packed the spare batteries I asked you to pack, for the GPS radar! It can’t be any other answer besides yes, or no!”

He weaves his way through the thicket like a well-oiled machine, expertly steering the bike up the mountain side with a precision that would make a cardiovascular surgeon jealous. His eyes grow wide and he slams the breaks on the bike, almost tumbling over the handlebars, and the forty-foot drop that he narrowly avoids careering over.
His heart beats powerfully in his chest as he looks down at his bikes GPS radar with a focused concentration, before slapping it on the side several times. The screen flickers, then resets its location and his eyes grow wider than before. “F-F-FFUCK ME!”

“You are wasting my time and yours Doctor Weaving,” Max says as he casually waves the revolver around without care. “We all climbed this mountain here today with one purpose, to find the Sarika Radar Gem, and I will not leave until I have it. You know more than you’re saying, so if I have to persuade you with more dystopian methods, I will.” He says as he places the barrel of his gun against Samantha’s skull. “Now, once more. Tell me what secrets you know, or I will kill your beautiful assistant first and then move onto the children!”

“B-B-But you enjoy it?” He asks her with a wide-eyed smile firmly planted on his face.
“It pays the bills,” She says, as she checks her positioning radar, and signals him to stop. “Okay, we’re at the spot John instructed us to climb to, to find the next clue. Do you see anything here?”
He laughs, “You know, John never sent us on this task.”
“W-W-WWhat?” She says, panic in her voice.

    Clear My Pathways

Clarion tumbles down the mountain side carving a path of destruction, which comes to its inevitable end at the bottom of a small ravine, one that would forever mask his final resting place from even the most advanced radar systems available.
In the darkness, something grasps him beneath the flesh and begins to pull him downward.
He lets out a half empty cry of desperation, but he knows how deep the depravities of existence goes, and knows the hopelessness of his cries.
It’s then a sharp pain tears through everything he is, as his soul is pulled from his carcass.

“Basic science ensures that the next move we make is the only move that is worth making.” Dale says as he wipes the sweat away from his brow with his forearm.
“Don’t be so closed Dale, why can’t you allow yourself to see the world for what it is, instead of examining it like a scientist.”
“Because science is the only truth worth seeing.”
“But look around you, look at the mountain we now climb, not with else like a radar, but use the eyes of a man, and see the beauty that surrounds us in every movement and moment.”

“So you made the decision to end his life before you preformed the task?”
“That’s what I told you when I first sat down, as with the fact you will need no radar to find his body, for I spread him out wide with these hands. They struck him down and continued to hit him until he moved no more.”

“A motivation proclamation is no excuse for the damnation you have brought upon our people. What you need to do is face up to your peers and show them that you’ve learned from your childish mistakes. Take my hand, let us climb this mountain together and let my knowledge be your radar.”
“Aren’t you being a little melodramatic about the whole thing?”
“Sure, I used a lot of metaphors to describe our current plight, but there’s no need for you to be an arsehole about it. All I want to do is help you get back to where you belong.”

    Through The Crowd

Corey’s chest heaves with each thrusting step, until he finally breaks out of the forest, and comes to the mountains edge. Then as if he was a puppet whose strings were cut, he collapses to the ground in an heap. With breathless desperation he looks back towards the broken pathway, hoping the untraceable route he’d taken was enough to confuse their radar. Seconds quickly turn into minutes with no sign of life behind him, and he allows himself to smile. “And that’s why WE’RE the dominate SPECIES!” he proclaims proudly while a buzzing sound grows louder and louder behind him.
