  • Can Not

    Can Not

    I am no nightmare,

    I am no dream,

    from these,

     you can escape,

    from these,

    you can wake,

    but from me,

    you can not wake,

    from me,

    you can not escape,

    for once you believe,

    you

    are

    MINE.

Day 348 – Testimony – Wrapped In Words

    Dawn  rises with crimson light,

and with blades of light the darkness is broken,

but don’t take comfort in the light,

for the monsters are still there,

    waiting to strike,

    when the sun goes down,

    when the night returns,

    so will they,

and come for you they will,

    rigor renewed,

    for it’s you they crave,

    your sin they desire,

    seventeen days,

    your time is almost done,

    so take my advice,

    and run!

    Daily Grind – Wayward Nights

I was planning on doing a video today for the Daily Grind, but this new lap top and me are just not meshing well, so, videos will have to wait until I work it out. I guess it’s a throw back to when I was writing full time for Fear In Fear Magazine as it helped me keep all my ideas in check, and just made to whole creative process work so much easier.

Anyway, that’s not what I want to talk to you about today, it’s last night that’s on my mind right now. It was about 3, 3:30 when I woke up with the feeling someone was in my room, I of course quickly turned on the light, and found none was there, I put it down to being half asleep and rolled back over.

Now, that in itself is not really worth mentioning I know, because really, it was nothing, just on its own that is, it’s what happened a little while later that makes it so important.

After I eventually drifted back off to sleep, 20 or so minutes later, I woke with the same feeling, this time however I didn’t turn the light on straight away, I just laid there, and that’s when I saw it, a figure standing at the foot of my bed, I almost shat myself, but when I turned on the light there was no one there. I searched the house, checked all the doors and windows, nothing was out of place, nothing unlocked, it was just impossible.

I don’t know what it was, I don’t know how to explain it, but if things keep happening, I’ll let you know more. Has anyone else had similar experiences?

  • A Moment

    A Moment

    A passage of time,

    minutes,

    seconds,

    hours and days,

    time itself measured by man,

    but for me,

time means nothing but a moment,

    a grain of sand,

    minute,

    forever,

    is my day,

    and beyond is my night,

    your sin fills my glass,

    your body becomes my puppet,

    fear me,

for I am not the reaper,

    fear me,

for I am not the devil,

    fear me,

because I am greater than your god,

    fear me,

    because I come for you…

Day 347 – Saturated – Wrapped In Words

    Minuscule mistakes blown into disrepair,

falling down around all and everything,

    nothing makes sense,

I can’t come up for air,

    dragged down in a spiral,

    twisting down and down,

    round and round,

    fighting for my survival,

    deeper and deeper I go,

    where no light pierces,

where no one but it goes,

    a place we all know,

    it needs no name,

    eighteen days,

    eighteen breaths,

and it’s the end of the game.

If you want to know how this story started, you can read about it HERE.

“It’s not fair, it’s not the way it should’ve went down, I could’ve done better,” he yells as he drives punch, after punch into the bag, his knuckles split open, bloody, his face, bruised and swollen.

“There’s no shame in defeat,” a voice says from the shadows.

    “I should’ve won!”

“Then you should’ve fought harder, you should’ve dodged like I taught you, instead of bloody just standing there like a stuffed animal. You gave your best, you did all you could, but, not all you had, you could’ve won, you just didn’t want to, so why did bitter?”

He grabs the bag and rests his head against it, letting out an exhausted sigh, “I wanted to, I could taste it, but then I started thinking, how many more fights would I have to fight? How many challengers would want what was mine? How  much more pain would I have to I through?” He looks over to the shadows, and see his silhouetted shape move backwards on his seat. “That’s when I decided I didn’t want that, I’d trained my entire life, went up against guys who were easily beaten, guys who went down quicker than my Linda Lovelace did when a gun was pointed at her head. But how long would it be until I ran into someone better, someone who could take everything I’d fought for away, I-I-I. I just got scared,” he says pushing his head into the bag once more.

“Being scared ain’t a sin boy, being scared is what makes us better than the rest, you just need to know how to use that fear, how to turn it into what you need out there, not turning your tail and running. Shit boy, the talent that rushes through your blood is second to none, you, at the top of your game, are unstoppable! Now, you need to decide if you get back on the horse and take life by the balls, or if you run away, like a little spoilt brat who doesn’t want to share his toys with everyone else,” he says, getting to his feet. “You know where I am when you make up your mind,” he says as he walks towards the doorway.

“I’m done,” he says softly through clenched teeth, the man stops at the door, not even bothering to turn around.

“When you change your mind, when you realize how much you need it, when you can’t sleep, call me.”

Day 347 – My Gloves, My Self – 50 Word Story

For Matthew’s 5th false 50 word story, he chose to take his words from a story that featured in issue 237 of Fear In Fear Magazine, called My Gloves, My Self, below you can read the short that was posted.

If you are interested, you can go HERE and read Matthew’s post of my original story he titled Strength. You are more than welcome, as always if inspiration hits, to expand the story yourself, all I ask is that you post a link in the comments below so I can showcase it on the blog.

  • Daily Grind – A Blast From The Past

Daily Grind – A Blast From The Past

Back when I was really hitting my stride while writing for Fear In Fear Magazine, I was introduced to an artist who had contacted the magazine due to being inspired by a few of my stories, his name was Gareth Wilkinson, we struck up a friendship instantly, and from that point on every story I wrote, he created visual interpretations that accompanied them, even taking cover credits for some of the issues, the last 5 where his best, they actually gave me cold shivers, still do to this day.

Now I’m guess you’re wondering why I’m telling you this, there must be a reason, right? and of course, you’re correct.

Earlier when I returned home from my expedition to purchase a new lap top, I didn’t notice at the time, but after losing my patience with this new computer, I mean seriously, Microsoft, the juggernaut that it is, should be able to make an operating system that does what it believes it can, right?

Anyway, I noticed the flashing light coming from my answering machine while I was in the middle of my fourth fucking mother-fuckers. I honestly can’t tell you the last time I was away from home received a call, with trepidation, I pressed play.

I was surprised by the voice I instantly recognized as Gareth’s, we hadn’t talked in almost seven years, he tried, but I was so self involved, I just cut him, like the rest of the world, out of my life. He didn’t have much to say, only that he was drawing , painting something, a large piece that spans several canvases, and that he needed to see me, he needed to show me.

I called him back almost immediately, the conversation was short, but we arranged to met when I was in Sydney, he assured me by the time we sit down, his paintings should be complete. I of course asked what it was, but he just said I need to see it for myself.

Anyway, it now looks like Saturday is going to be a lot busier than I anticipated, I will, as always, keep you in the loop.

  • Daily Grind – Computers Suck

    Daily Grind – Computers Suck

My lack of human company has created a black void around my life, one that seems to suck many things into it, and, every once in a while, strange things occur around the house. I know, this sounds like the start of a story, but as this seems an outlet for my life at the moment, I thought I’d share it with you all.

Last night, or more like this morning, I awoke in the lounge room of my home, the lights were on, I was sitting in an upright position on the couch, the laptop on my lap, and, a burning cigarette in my hand. I haven’t smoked in eighteen years, haven’t brought a packet for just as long, but somehow, there it was, in my hand, the filter was wet, and I could taste the vile flavors dancing around in my mouth. I sat there staring at the bloody thing for way too long, trying to piece together what happened last night, I wrote, read, and then went to bed, all this before midnight, but now here I was at 4  in the morning, obviously delving into sins of the past.

My mind must have wandered far longer than I realized, as I felt a sharp pain, my fingers screamed at me, and I knew then and there the cigarette had burnt down to the filter, and now was licking my fingers with it hot tongue. I jumped up, my lap top launched off my lap, and crashed to the ground, bloody thing soaked, the screen flickered, rolled, fizzed and then turned to black, not before displaying something stranger than me waking up with a cigarette hand, it was a twisted, distorted face, he was talking, screaming, no sounds came from the laptop unfortunately, and then it was gone.

The computer is toast, hopefully the hard drive can be saved, the guy who sold me this over expensive typewriter at JB Hi-Fi asked me about whether I had a one drive account or something called an eye cloud, neither I’ve heard of, so I’m assuming not. He said if I was lucky maybe someone could help me out, but after he took my money he didn’t care.  I’ll let you know how I go, although I need to mention this new windows is totally ridiculous, I much prefer XP.

  • Shadows

    Shadows

    A mirror image,

    a twisted vision,

    spinning tops,

time and memories of things before and after,

    I am the shadows,

    the wind that blows,

the beast behind you breathing softly on your neck,

    I never age,

    I never die,

I’ll be here until the end,

    when time slips away,

    and on that day,

    that fateful day,

    I’ll finally have my revenge,

    upon man,

    upon the stars,

    and finally,

upon the creator of all that was,

    I’ll feast,

    I’ll gorge,

    I’ll be all and everything,

    I’ll be the end,

    the beginning,

    and nothing,

    for I am the beast,

    I am the devourer,

    I am the first,

    and I’ll be the last.

    my love is lost,

    my heart is still,

    we butcher,

    we kill,

    we fuck,

    we lie,

    we sin,

    every day,

    every breath,

    we are not gods,

    we are not immortals,

    we are self loving,

    masturbating,

    pieces of shit,

    Day 346 – I Smell Your Sin – 50 Word Story Expanded

If you want to know how this story started, you can read about it HERE.

“There are some things, someone like you shouldn’t see,” the old man says, as he slowly settles himself on the corner of the bed, his cane now acting as somewhere to rest his weary arms, as they fold over the handle, and he leans forward. “Tell me why you need this, tell me what I should show you what you ask?” He asks.

“I-I-I, I JUST need to, I HAVE to, for me to believe this, to believe all the tales, to know it’s true, I have to see IT for myself,” he says quickly, his mouth frothy with churned saliva, his heart racing to an erratic beat in his chest, his hands shaking as if he’d been holding a lawn mower for the last three hours, and his right eye, twitching every few seconds.

“Look at you boy, you’re a mess, seeing is not going to make you be more of a man, seeing is going to god damn kill you,” the old man says.

“PLEASE!” He yells, grabbing him by the arm.

“Get your god damn hands off me,” he says, trying to pull himself free.

“SHOW ME! SHOW ME AND YOU CAN LEAVE!” He yells, knocking the old man to the ground, before he begins to drive the cane powerfully across the old man head several times, until finally, exhausted, he falls to his knees, instantly he feels the blood begin to soak into his jeans, and he looks down upon the fractured, busted open skull of the man he once called father.

“Dreams of dreams,” a raspy voice hisses from the darkness, he searches the room frantically, but finds no owner of the voice, he stares back down at his father’s body, his blank, dead eyes staring back at him.

“Dreams of the dreamer,” his father says, causing him to leap to his feet, before slamming down three more powerful whacks with the cane onto his head, while the old man laughs.

“All come to he who calls, to he, who believes,” the raspy voice says from the darkness once more, he spins around the room, his eyes darting from corner to corner, his heart beating powerfully in his chest.

“SHOW YOURSELF MONSTER, COME, MAKE ME BEL…..” His words stop in their tracks as he feels all the hairs on his body stand on their ends, he hears a low, otherworldly growl from behind him,m and slowly turns around, falling to his knees as his eyes, wide with fright, watch its distorted, unnatural movements as it steps closer, and closer towards him. His nostrils burn, as its stench wafts into his face, he feels the contents of his stomach surge from within and out onto the floor, as the beast now stands before him.

  • Day 346 – I Smell Your Sin – 50 Word Story

    Day 346 – I Smell Your Sin – 50 Word Story

As Fear In Fear Magazine headed towards, what was at the time an unknown end, I began working on something that would be what I consider my masterpiece, a story so complex, so ahead of it’s time, it never really had the chance to become what it truly needed to.

Issue 472 featured one of the many incognito preludes to a greater story we were planning to dedicate several future issues to, but unfortunately, five months later, before I had finished the story, Fear In Fear Magazine was no more, Deadhead never saw the light of day, and I began a journey that would take several years of my life.

So, with all that said, Matthew’s next 50 word story were taken from a short I originally I Smell Your Sin, this short was one of the first, larger than life viewings of the dreaded Deadhead, a creature who had, up until that stage only been mentioned in the dozen or so shorts I had somehow included it in. The 50 word story that was posted, went like this.

His eyes, wide with fright, watch its distorted, unnatural movements as it steps closer, and closer towards him. His nostrils burn, as its stench wafts into his face, he feels the contents of his stomach surge from within and out onto the floor, as the beast now stands before him.

Now, I have to be honest here, the work I did on the Deadhead was some of the most personal work I’ve every done, and where some of the stories came from, was a place I seldom visit, so to have this before me, to have this challenge of rewriting  a new story around these words, is very surreal, but in saying that I can assure you I will produce something new for you all.

If you want to read he so called original expanded version Matthew posed under the name Stench, you can read it HERE. Also, if you feel inspired to write something using the 50 word story, please, by all means do so, and make sure you let me know so I can showcase it on the blog.

  • Daily Grind – Memories Of The Past

Daily Grind – Memories Of The Past

I remember the day we were told Fear In Fear Magazine was mo more, I was sitting in a Sydney coffee shop with good friend and fellow writer Sam Melton. We were both more than surprised, we were shattered. Three days later, after a phone conversation I still to this day can’t remember, Sam took his own life, I recall thinking that lucky bastard, how did he have the gall to do such a thing when I was unable to even place a blunt knife against my wrists without chickening out.

After Clare, my wife, had left with the girls, I was alone, looking back, I don’t blame her for leaving, Fear In Fear Magazine had some sort of hold on me, and all the spare time I had was devoted to writing new exciting stories for each issue. During that time Sam became the closet thing I had to family, so when he decided things were bad enough that he wanted out, he bailed, which, to be honest was Sam through and through. After Sam’s funeral I tried to reestablish some sort of communication between myself and Clare, but she never returned any of my calls, and try as I might, I could never track her, or the girls down.

To be honest here with you today, I never really tried, I wanted to, really I did, but I was so beat up, so down, so depressed, I couldn’t face life, I wouldn’t face another disappointment. So I hid in darkness, and that’s where I stayed until I received a call from an old colleague who worked on Fear In Fear Magazine with me, and encouraged me too look up this blog you now read, fuck, up until that day I didn’t even know what a blog fucking meant, now of course I do.

Why am I telling you all this, I don’t know, maybe because this morning, I picked up the phone and arranged to fly back to Sydney, as an old friend who is long gone supplied me with an address, and tomorrow, I will face my past. You see, some people concentrate on tomorrow, others on today, I’ve been concentrating on things that mean nothing, when I need to fix yesterday, I need to make amend for the lives I’ve lost being part of, for our future is always lost somewhere in our past.

lost in a world of useless words,

    wasted chances,

but the end is far from here,

time still allows something to be done,

    rights to be wronged,

    love to be found,

    nothing is incomplete,

    nothing is impossible,

    only you hold the key,

    unlock the door,

    open it and see,

    before it’s too late,

    before your time runs out,

twenty days before the beast takes your soul.

Day 345 – The Challenge – 50 Word Story Expanded

If you want to know how this story started, you can read about it HERE.

“It’s easy, just put your lips together, and blow, the melody will follow in time,” he says with a smile, she looks up at him, as tears run down her face.

    “Please, I-I-I can’t.”

“There’s no such word, as can’t,” he says as he slowly begins to sharpen his knife. “You see Helen, I’ve taught many a great, some of the finest players you would ever hear, and all them, at the beginning said the same things, and like you they all had talent, just no way of grabbing it by the balls, making it dance to their tune, I showed them how to take it and make it theirs. Each challenge is different, each student presents me with a different style, a different avenue to twist my skill into, and I pride myself that through all these years, none have failed to pass, that of course was before you came along, you, you Helen have skill, but you lack the basic skills that separate children from adults,” he says, letting his head drop, as he clutches his temple. “I find it impossible to understand how someone, thirty-seven years old, can lack basic social skills, my god even savants show greater social skills than you, so, you leave me little choice but to try a method that was abandoned long ago because of its brutality. All in all Helen, what this means for you my dear, is, if you don’t whistle me a tune, a tune I can recognize, I will cut you,” he says letting the knife shine in the light. “At first the cuts will be short, delicate, a nuisance more than pain, but, the longer you resist, the deeper the cuts will become, the more painful they will be, until, you do as I ask,” he says, turning, to the empty chair, he looks around the deserted room, the door open wide, he lets out a sigh of exhaustion, and gentley places the knife onto a table. “I don’t get paid enough for this, ” he hisses as he strides to the open doorway, “HELEN, there’s nowhere to go, we’re miles from anywhere and you’ve no way of escape! So, you either come back now and save us both a lot of huffing and puffing or, you’ll not only fail my class, but your inheritance will go to some snotty bullshit charity, as your parents laid out in their will,” he yells out, his eyes search the darkness, before she slowly walks out into the light, shoves her way past him and sits back down in the seat.

“Now,” he says, as he closes the door behind him, “whistle for me.”

  • Day 345 – The Challenge – 50 Word Story

    Day 345 – The Challenge – 50 Word Story

In issue 451 of Fear In Fear Magazine I created what regular readers at the time would say was one of my most memorable villains, in a story called The Challenge. Our story revolved around a man by the name of Angus Strong, a villain who challenged his victims to complete a simple task, and their prize if successful, would be their lives.

for Matthew’s third supposed 50 word story, he chose to take the words from this story, giving you the words that follow.

“It’s easy, just put your lips together, and blow, the melody will follow in time,” he says with a smile, she looks up at him, as tears run down her face.

    “Please, I-I-I can’t.”

“There’s no such word, as can’t,” he says as he slowly begins to sharpen his knife.

If you wish to read the full version of the story that Matthew posted on this blog under the name Passion, you can go HERE.

I’ll post my NEW, ORIGINAL story here later tonight, and as mentioned earlier, if you feel inspiration when reading the 50 words, write an expanded version yourself, and I’ll showcase it on this blog.

  • Daily Grind – Showcasing Your Star

Daily Grind – Showcasing Your Star

Yesterday I talked about dreams, and how they inspire the stories that slip out of ones mind and onto the paper in front of you.

Today, I want to touch a little on how another’s work can inspire. I know I mentioned fan fiction the other day, but this is deeper than mer fan fiction, this has to do with one of the surprising things I’ve found since going over the different ways Matthew presented my work to you, is that of the 50 word stories, and how they insipired some people to expand upon the stories themselves.

It’s humbling to think words I wrote somehow inspired others to build a world separate from where the original story dwelled in, and, in some instances, the stories were far superior than the original the words were taken from.

That being said, I’d love to see others try their hands at reshaping each of the 50 word stories, so if over the course of the next few weeks, as I write new original stories that utilize the original 50 word stories, you find a story that inspires you to write, please write, write your bloody arse off, then, let me know, because I’d love to showcase your story on the blog.
