    Daily Grindhard

How long has it been since I shared words, too long I say, my mind has been elsewhere, preparing things, and, of course, keeping the blog turning over.
What changes have come, Whispered Words as shifted and morphed into Wrapped In Words, the same, yet not. Tales of different kinds will find its way here, not just poems and rancid death threats to the world. They will be something more sullied, if that can be done.

Dark Stars will continue, as the story really begins now, the set up is done, the opening credits have flickered by, and now it’s time for the action to start.

Lies, yes Lies will unfold anew, the world of darkness, technology and horror rolled into on tiny ball of violence, look for that to come soon.

Beware the YouChallenge, for it will be returning soon, as will the 50 Word Stories and their Expanded versions, keep watch, for that will be with us all soon.

And finally, fear The Roundhead, for the story is not yet done, and the beast, is far from defeated…

Until then my friends, few and many, let the darkness embrace you, for it knows what you want, and it knows how to give it to you.

    Matt

Day 257 – Paid – Wrapped In Words

    Dead,

    dying,

    melting away,

    into the clay,

    into nothing,

    a memory,

    a ghost,

    of what was,

    not what is,

    you are gone,

    I am here,

    wasting away,

    while you are far away,

    living your life,

    smiling,

    I cry,

    I’d say goodbye,

but who is here to hear me?

    Who is here to care?

    forget,

    forgotten,

    but not,

    gone,

    just,

    not here.

  • Day 256 – Play Your Hand – Short Story

Day 256 – Play Your Hand – Short Story

“Play your hand vile demon, play your hand before I make my final move!” He bellows towards the cowering young man in the corner.

“Please, Teluo, you’ve got it all wrong, I’m not a monster!” He yells back.

“Don’t make me out to be a fool, for too long have you fooled me, for too long have I turned a blind eye to you and your deeds, tonight it ends, tonight I put you in the ground where you will rot like the grotesque piece of garbage you are!” Teluo yells as he charges forwards, twin blades drawn from their scabbard, light flicks of their glistering steel, as he storms closer, and closer, saliva dripping quickly from his twisted lips, and his eyes tight, focused, digging into his flesh well before the steel of his blades, two steps away, then one, he draws back, then, thrusts forward,  and then, he is nowhere, emptiness, a world empty of everything. “WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!” He screams, but nothing, he tries to move, but finds he cannot, this world, the place, this, nothing, holds him in place.

“COME ON YOU COWARD! COME SHOW YOU…” He stops midway though his sentence, as the darkness melts away, and his finds himself standing in an empty field, the sky dark, and grey, the grass, dead, and yellow, her blood, deep, bright, and vibrant, he stares at it, as it runs from the holes in her flesh, he gasps as she falls to her knees, they lock eyes one last time as HE slowly rises from behind her, his blade bloody and drawn, a smile upon his face.

“This is what you wanted wasn’t it, this is what you asked of me, called of me, begged of me, I told you Teluo, I said I was no monster, but you refused to believe me, you pushed me here, you killed her, you, killed them all,” he says, glancing quickly over his shoulder, Teluo’s eyes quickly follow his, and he sees them, in seas of red, his family, his friends, everyone he swore to protect.

“This can’t be,” he says softly as they lock eyes again.

“Oh, but it is,” he says, as she slices the sword swiftly through her neck, she drops to the ground as a fountain of blood sprays up from where her head once sat, Teluo screams, as his world slows down, and then, he feels the blade against his throat, and then, a sharp, soft, cold pain passes over him, and then, darkness once more.

  • Day 254 – Stones – Short Story

    Day 254 – Stones – Short Story

I didn’t think I was going to be able to go through with it, hell I don’t think anyone did, so you can imagine their surprise when I did it.

Did what, is that what you’re all asking right now? I mean, you must be. None of you know me, none of you know what happened, or why, so you’re obviously asking yourself, what is this guy talking about. So, to save you anymore wonder, I’ll tell you everything, I mean, obviously, not everything, somethings, are, well, a waste of time telling you, but other things, the important stuff, I won’t skip over, because they make it all the more interesting.

It started last week, when Big John came back into town, his mum had passed away a week before, and his dad had taken it bad, real bad, John, who had to quit his job, well okay, maybe he didn’t have to, but he quit his job and returned home, to be with him, and together, hopefully, both of them could heal some what. I know, if you’ve never lost anyone close you don’t understand, you could never understand, and that’s not what this story is about, because, I haven’t, I mean, I’ve lost family, I’ve lost a friend here and there, but I haven’t lost someone close, so, this isn’t about anything like that.

Anyway, John returned home, moved back into the house he grew up with, and tried to help his dad put this life back together, the best way he could.

I ran into him for the first time three days ago, a lot had changed since we were kids, I’d filled out, grew into my skin, and, well, changed. John on the other hand, was the same, almost as if time had stopped for him, and he just stayed like he was when we were back in school. Which was a major plus, see, I had always had a thing for John, but, he was way out of my league, and I was, well, not someone John would really have anything to do with, so when he came over to me and asked if I was Becky Watts, I almost lost my shit, I stumbled my words out, assured him that I indeed was Becky, and that did he want to sit, which he did. For the next few hours we chatted about our lives, the changes that we had made, and well, whatever else happened to pop up.

When we had finally talked as much as we could and it became obvious that it was time to go our separate ways, I extended a hand, and said it was great catching up, and we should do it again real soon. He blushed, I mean, Big John Duggan blushed, so, I did as well, he said that would be great, and he would love to catch up again, soon, and so, we exchanged phone numbers, and he went his way, and I went my way.

Now, you’re probably telling yourself, what the hell, this is not some crazy thing. This is not some out there insane story that needed clarification, this is life, well, to be honest, I was just giving you the set up, because what happened later, well that is where everything took a crazy turn.

John called up at about three in the morning, apparently he had no one else to call, his dad had overdosed on sleeping pills, and according to the paramedics, if John didn’t act when he did, it would’ve been too late. He was at the hospital, so I rushed to his side, I stayed there until morning, and we both left, he asked me in for coffee, which I accepted, and the next thing I knew, we were both entangled in each others arms and in the bedroom, we got hot and heavy, and we were both down to our underwear, when I pull away, I knew it was time, I had to tell him.

The look in his eyes was surprising I have to admit, and then, when he said he knew I wasn’t Becky the whole time, made my jaw drop, but when he grabbed me by my hard cock and told me to shut up, I lost my shit right then and there, and he just smiled, and kissed me and said, we’ve got plenty of time.

  • Day 247 – Ride, The Lie – Short Story

Day 247 – Ride, The Lie – Short Story

Okay, so, last night, I told you about the not so normal drive home I had with my family, I know plenty of you doubted it, laughed off what I told you as another one of my crazy little short stories, and you know what, I don’t blame you, I would.

But, don’t tell me you didn’t feel a but was coming. But, none of what I told you was a lie, while, at the same time, none of it was the truth.

How the hell does that work, it’s either the truth, or, it’s a lie, right? Wrong!

    How so, this so.

I didn’t tell you everything that happened, and what I told you, I added a few over the top elements.

It didn’t happen yesterday, or last week, or last month, in fact, I don’t really remember when it happened.

The woman, when I saw her, she didn’t glow, in fact, it was the opposite, I almost didn’t see her because of how monotone she was.

I also told you I stopped inches from her, that’s also a lie. I plowed right into her, the moment I first laid eyes on her, there was no second time, no long moments of driving with her image stuck in my head.

You see, I was caught halfway between being awake and asleep, her dirty, grey image standing in the middle of the road like a possum caught in headlights, registered nothing to me. But, when she stuck my car, or, my car struck her, she hit the hood and windscreen hard and I thrust my foot on the breaks.

I jumped from the car, that was true, she grabbed me and told me to watch out for the beast, like I told you before. But, in reality, when I turned around, there was t just blood on the exterior of the car, I saw blood, plenty of blood, on the inside of the windscreen, my wife’s door was hanging open, so I rushed to it, and her empty dead eyes stared at me. I dared myself to look in the back seat, it was the only way, but before I could, my heart jumped as I felt the cold knife against my throat, he hissed in my ear, deep low words, words I don’t remember and then darkness took me.

To this day, I still don’t know why he left me alive, maybe it was a way to thank me for killing the girl, or maybe it was punishment, is that why he killed my family? To make me suffer from taking his kill from him?

It doesn’t matter anymore though, this part of the story anyway, because, soon, tomorrow, tonight, or maybe in a few minutes, I’ll forget what really happened that night, and I’ll be home again, with them, happy, whole, and not here, alone, old, suffering every time the meds wear off, and I sit here waiting for the new round to kick in, until I can be lost in a world of what should’ve been, and not this horrid world of what is.

  • Day 246 – The Ride – Short Story

Day 246 – The Ride – Short Story

I want to take this moment, the one we’re about to share, to tell you about a story that happened to me, just a few hours ago. I know, in all honesty, you’re not going to believe me, because, I don’t believe it myself, but it’s true, I swear to whatever higher being you believe in, it is, for I have no reason to lie.

First I’ll set the scene, so you’re with me, and I can tell the story correctly. The sun had just set, and dusk was fading from the sky, the stars were starting to take over the darkness, and the moon, large and full, glowed a deep yellow. I was, in my car, my wife, sleeping in the passenger seat beside me, and my daughter, talking to herself in the back seat, slowly slipping into the sweet embrace of sleep as well.

Did I mention it’s Friday the thirteenth today? Not that it’s relatively important to the story, but, it adds some charm I guess.

Anyway, soon it was just me, staring into the darkness, as I drove forward, onward, towards home. We had already traveled more than an hour, and had almost the same if not more, until we reached home, a family outing, one that had almost been a waste of time, as we had rushed around, and really never got to experience each other’s  company, the way we would’ve wanted to.

Anyway, I saw her, at first, standing on the side of the road, her white dress glowed in the cars headlights, or maybe, it was just glowing on its own, I’m not sure anymore. Anyway, I drove past, but, for the next few miles, the image of that woman nagged at my head, I couldn’t stop thinking, if she was okay, lost, or, something to else. That’s when she was standing there, in the middle of the road, staring straight towards me, I slammed on the breaks, and the car slid for a few short meters, coming to a stop, a few feet from her, I leapt from the car and starting yelling at her, all the while, she stood there, quietly, just staring at me. And then, as my heart slowly started to slow, and my anger cooled, she reached out and pointed, past me, past my car and towards a huge black shadow that stood behind it.

    “Beware the beast,” she said.

I felt the sweat run down my brow, and I turned back towards her, she was inches from me now, and grabbed hold of my arm.

    “WAKE UP!” She screamed.

My eyes flicked open, and I almost lost control of the car, my wife stirred in her seat and asked me if I was okay, I brushed off her question and literally held my eyes open the rest of the way home. The funny thing was, when we got home my wife asked me what was wrong with my arm, I asked her why she’d ask such a question, and that’s when I noticed the bruise on my arm, in the shape of a hand.

Now, again, you don’t need to believe me, but, it’s true, I mean, seriously, why would I lie to you?
