A Word In Lies – 100 Word Microfiction Short Story

I entered a short story competition that required me to write a 1000 word short story in 48 hours. The story needed to meet three things, a genre (A Ghost Story), a location (An Igloo) and an object (A Coffee Mug). It took me a while to find the right idea and to get it to work in a way I was happy with. But like the last time I entered something similar, I enjoyed the desire to find the story that sparked the right way for me. So, for the sake of creativity, here is 1 of the 24 rejected stories in a 100 word format..

A Word In Lies

The walls cave inward and Donovan charges forward, as the ice melts around him. He leaps and strides, desperation beginning to overtake his desire to survive, and replacing it with unparalleled fear. The archway at the end of the hallway collapses, blocking his only way out, and he lest out an exploding cry of frustration.

“I WILL NOT DIE HERE WITH YOU!” he screams.

“But we are forever, you said so yourself,” a woman’s distorted voice says from behind him.

He spins to face an apparition of a young woman. “I NEVER SAID WE WERE FOREVER, I SAID I WAS!”

  1. Damn! My claustrophobia came out at full force as your story progressed. Talk about getting cold sweats! Marvelous piece of writing, my friend. I do apologize for not reading it again though for my daily anxiety tank is already overflowing… 😉
