Make Believe Farming – Microfiction Short Story

Make Believe Farming

Harold remains motionless on the floor as the pool of red grows slowly beneath him. His eyes flicker open and at first the world seems fuzzy cold, then it quickly reminds him of his many failures as a sea of pain washes over him like a waterfall. He screams in perpetual agony as he tries valiantly to force himself to his feet, only to collapse back to the ground.

While the minutes cascade in upon themselves he desperately sucks in breath after breath as the situation paints itself in grander colours in his mind. He gasps as his eyes twist and turn, casting his gaze towards her grinning face.

Her grin broadens, and she tilts her head to the side. “Hello cheeky boy, I’d started to think you’d forgotten about me.”

“H-H-How?” he stammers.

Her smile only grows as she laughs loudly. “That would spoil all the fun, wouldn’t it?”
