    Day 96 – Lightning – Short Story

He sits down and looks across the room, past the fools dancing on the floor, past the groups of people chatting along the side and to the bar, at her, she looks around the room, laughing and talking to her friends, he doesn’t know what they’re talking about, but he can tell she’s not really interested. She looks his way, and they lock eyes for a moment, she is grabbed back into the conversation and laughs again and looks his way, smiling, blushing, he smiles back and raises his glass. One of her friends looks over and she whispers something into her ear, and they head off towards the bath room. He follows them with his eyes until they disappear from view and then he turns back to the bar and orders himself another drink.

“I’d keep my distance if I was you,” a voices says from behind, he turns to face a large, tanned man, wearing a silk shirt and slacks, money, probably his daddies.

    “Sorry?”

“You don’t need to be sorry, just find someone else to leech off tonight, she’s out of bounds.”

    “And you are?”

“I’m the guy who just told you how it’s going to work tonight.”

“And if I don’t take your advice?”

“If you don’t take advice, then you’ll see why they call me Lightning,” he says as he takes a step forward. He sits on his seat and looks around the man and across the dance floor, past the people and into her eyes, she looks frightened, scared even and he winks and looks back at the man.

“So, correct me if I’m wrong. If I really wanted to find out why they call you Lightning I should go over and say hello to the pretty lady?” He says as he waves to her.

    “What?”

“I said,” he says, as he stands up and stares into his eyes. “If I wanted to find out why they call you Lightning, I should go talk to the pretty lady over there?”

“You don’t want to know why!”

“But I do, so therein lies the issue, doesn’t it.”

    “What? Are you serious?”

“I’m as serious as your Daddies money. So, come on, tell me, why do they call you Lighting? And please, don’t whip your cock out and start jerking it, because if you got the name Lightning because you thump it off like a racing car and always finish first, I don’t want to know.”

They stand there staring at each other for a moment, he can tell he’s confused him enough to rattle the poor rich boys mind. Enough to see it in his eyes before it happens and ducks the sloppily thrown punch easily, and the second one as well, he shoves him away and smiles.

“So, it’s not for you boxing skills.”

“I’m going to rip your head off!” Lightning screams as he throws another sloppy, undirected punch, which he easily out manoeuvrers, and puts his hands up in the air, laughing.

“I’m not interested in fighting you Lightning, honestly,” he says.

“Then stay away from my girl!” he growls.

“I am not your girl,” she says standing behind them, he turns around, his face red and ready to burst.

“This is a conversation between me and you, not this piece of trash!” he says. “So you go back over there and we’ll discuss it after!” he says as he shoves her away, and he feels it, a slight sensation and then dizziness and the floor suddenly coming up to meet him as he crashes to the ground.

“So that’s why they call you Lightning,” he says as he offers the girl his hand. “The names Johnny,” he says with a smile.

“Madeline,” she says as he helps her too her feet. “I’m so sorry about Frank, he’s having a hard time since the breakup.”

“I can see, would you like a drink?”

    “Shouldn’t we help him up?”

“Do you want to?” Johnny asks.

    “Not really.”

“Then, would you like a drink?”

  • Day 95 – Transfixed – Short Story

    Day 95 – Transfixed – Short Story

I sit the knife on the table and stare at it for what seems like hours, days, maybe even years, time means nothing now, all I can see is what is before me, I am transfixed, not just by the knife, but by the deep red liquid that has found itself splashed over the blade and hilt of it. I slowly reach out to touch it, and I feel a spark of electricity flow from the liquid up my arm, and tears into my jaw, the liquid splashes against my skin and my clothes. I raise my hand and look at it in wonder, the deep red liquid has seemingly washed over my hand, and soaked into the sleeve of my pale blue shirt. It’s then that I feel something run down my leg, its warm, and wet, and then the smell hits my nose, I remembered my doctor saying how I needed to drink more water, as the longer I allowed myself to dehydrate, the worse my urine would smell. I feel it run into my shoe, and my sock quickly soaks it up. I feel something deep, grow inside me, a feeling, not an actual object, it was shame I think. But I ask myself, why should I feel shame? Was it the fact that I, a grown man of forty years of age had just wet myself so freely and without remorse, wait, was that a lie, was this remorse for that? Or was it because of what I had done moments before I placed the knife on the table, the one covered in the red liquid. I looked over my shoulder and towards where they lie, their lifeless eyes, starring towards some impossible, invisible being, who was, from the look on their faces, welcoming them home with open arms, the red liquid is splashed over their naked bodies, small puddles sit beneath them that slowly run into a drain in the tiled floor. I study their faces, and I find myself surprised how content their expressions are, there is no fear or horror, their faces are not twisted up into balls of disgust, in fact, they look peaceful, more peaceful than I have ever seen anyone before. I look back at the knife, the liquid calls to me again, and I feel something rip through my shoulder. For a few moments I stand there, as my brain tries to register what is happening, and slowly, I fall to my knees, gritting my teeth together and clenching my hands into fists, then I smell something burning, I look to my shoulder and see smoke rising up from a hole in my shirt, and slowly, more of the red liquid begins to soak into its blue fibres, I hear muffled words, and then I see them, six figures, rushing towards me, guns raised, they shout, and I feel one of then kick me to the ground, my arms are pulled behind my back as they tightly lock my hands together. I lie there, still trying to make sense of what is happening, trying to understand what will be, and then I see it again, the red liquid, running away from me, along the tiles, towards the drain, and I can’t help but smile, maybe, one day, I might be lucky enough to make my escape, like they have, down, through the drain.

Day 95 – Private Session – Black Label Short Story

She places her phone on the table and stretches her arms in the air and lets out a long, drawn out yawn, before pulling the blanket off from around her legs and walks over to the small bench that makes up the better part of her kitchen and picks up a strawberry from a plate and stuffs it in her mouth. She grabs the plate and quickly settles herself back down on the couch, opening up her laptop that sits on the table. She types in an address in the browser and waits for a few moments as the site come up before she logs into the live cams website and sits back, having another strawberry from the plate as she waits. Which isn’t very long, as an icon at the top of the screen flashes, and she leans in and smiles.

‘You’re back :)’ comes up on the screen.

“I told you I would be,” she says with a smile…

  • Day 94 – Windows – YouChallenge Short Story

Day 94 – Windows – YouChallenge Short Story

Steve throws his jacket onto the back of the chair and gently closes the door, locking it as he does, and then confidently strides over to the window and opens the blinds, looking out over the dark city. He smiles broadly and undoes his belt as he settles down in his seat and opens the laptop that sits on his desk, quickly bringing up a web browsers. He looks around like a child who is about to do something naughty and that’s when he catches a glimpse of a figure, moving quickly out of view in window of the building across the street. For the next five or more minutes he searches the floors of the building, looking for any movement, but the office block looks to be completely deserted and silent, so he turns back to his laptop and unzips his fly, a website flashes up on the screen, littered with naked women and men, engaged in various sexual activities, he wiggles his trousers down and grabs hold of his hardening member, and then freezes in place, as he feels eyes staring at him, and once again he looks out, across the street into the building opposite, he sees the man standing in the window staring back at him, and he turns around quickly and closes the laptop and tries to shuffle his pants back up as his phone rings, making him jump in fright, he grabs the phone off the desk and answers it nervously.

    “H-H-Hello, this is Charles.”

“Hello Charles,” the voice on the other end says.

    “Can I help you?”

“I’m not sure, you look like the one who needs the hand, so to speak.”

    “I’m sorry? Who is this?”

“Just a neighbour who noticed someone in need of assistance is all I am, unless you saw something else, and then were going to have some sort of problem I think.”

    “What?”

“Look out the window Charles!” the voice orders, Charles nervously turns back to the window to see the man waving towards him.

    “See me now.”

“How did you get this number?”

“Wasn’t hard tubby, just as it wouldn’t be too hard to come over there and rip your stomach open and force feed you your intestines several times over until you choke on them!”

“I-I-I-I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Charles screams as he slams the phone down, he looks back out the window and the man is gone, he lets out an exhausted sign of relief as he sinks back into his chair, and for the next few minutes he just sits there, calming himself, relaxing. Before his mind begins to drift and he suddenly wonders why the man disappeared for the window, and then he realises, then the threat of feeding him his own intestines causes him to leap from his seat and rush to towards the door, he pulls it open as the knife blade tears into his stomach, he screams in pain as he crashes to the floor. Through the tears and the pain he can see the man’s blurred image standing a few feet away from him and he reaches out. “W-W-W-why?” He finally manages to ask.

“Because, sometimes you’re just in the wrong place at the wrong time, and that is you all over fat boy, anyway, enough small talk, its dinner time!”

  • Day 94 – Sooner Or Later – Short Story

Day 94 – Sooner Or Later – Short Story

He looks around the room nervously as he grips tightly to the hammer, sucking a deep breath in he takes a small step forward and glances feverously over his shoulder, she nods to him in confidence, he can see in her eyes that she’s scared but she’s putting on a brave face to make him feel better, she squeezes his hand and he looks back ahead and takes another small step, the pain from the gash in his leg rips through him and he takes another deep breath and he feels a wave of nausea wash over him, and his knees weaken for a moment, he feels his eyes begin to roll up in head. She grips his hand harder and he snaps back into the moment and takes another step forward again.

    “I’m okay,” he says softly.

“I know,” she replies as they slowly work their way across the room until the reach the doorway, he looks at her as he slowly places his hand on the knob.

“When I open this, we run, we don’t stop, we don’t think, we just run, no matter what happens, just run.”

“What about Bobby, we have to find Bobby,” she says frantically.

“If we’re dead we can’t help him, we’ve got to get to his dad, we have to tell him everything, we have to tell him what really happened.”

“Stu, we, w-we can’t, then they’ll know it’s all our fault, we can’t, let’s just find Bobby and get out of here!”

“Donna, we run, we get the fuck out of here and we tell Sanders everything, we have to make this right.”

A laugh echoes through the warehouse, “You lost that chance, you played your card now deal with it!” a voice says from the darkness.

“There has to be another way!” she yells, the voice laughs again.

“Fuck you, this isn’t our fault, we didn’t know!” Stu yells.

“Play times over.” The voice hisses in the darkness, Stu looks at Donna and tightens his grip on her hand and she reluctantly nods her head as he grips the handle and pulls the door open and they both rush out of the doorway, he tries to fight the agony, the pain in his leg but it gets the best of him and he crashes into the ground in heap.

    “RUN! Don’t stop!”

    “I can’t!” She screams.

    “RUN!”

She turns and runs across the abandoned car park, toward the road as an arrow tears into the side of her skull, killing her instantly, her lifeless body crashes to the ground and he screams as the hooded figure walks out of the shadows and places a boot on her skull as he pulls the arrow free, while he lies in a heap on the ground, tears running down his face.

“Why?” he screams out. “Why?” he yells again, the figure strides toward him and grabs a hand full of hair and pulls him up to his knees, pressing a large hunting knife to his throat.

“Because you all have to die,” he says as he rips the blade across his throat, he kneels there, chocking, gasping for air as he still holds him firmly by the hair, his blood spews out violently out of the tear until his heart stops pumping and he lets him drop to the ground, from behind a metal pipe strikes the back of his head and he crashes to the ground as a boy drives the pipe down viciously several more times, until he collapses on his knees, tears streaming down his face, he can hear the sirens from the police cars approaching and looks over at Stu’s body as the red and blue lights close in on him. Officers jump from their cars, drawing their guns quickly and Detective Davey Sanders rushes to the boys side gripping him tightly, the cut above his left eye tapped and stitched.
“It’s okay Bobby, it’s over, it’s over.” He says as he cradles his son, the other officers quickly check over the bodies, he lurches up and drives the blade into Fitzpatrick as Sanders unloads his clip into his dead centre, and he flops to the ground again, starring up into the cold, night sky, as his blood runs into the drain, along with his victims, merging together as all things do, in death.

  • Day 93 – Constricted – Short Story

    Day 93 – Constricted – Short Story

The lights flicker violently as he lies there silently and still, his eyes held open by wire speculum’s, a monitor beeps every few seconds as it registers a beat from his heart, but besides that, there are no other sounds in the room. We slowly bend forward, as we dive towards him, spiralling downward, zooming in closer and closer to his eyeball, the room becomes gigantic, as does the man, soon we are hurtling towards the immense, white plateau which is the sclera of his eye, we pick up pace, moving quickly, and continuing to zoom in, the ridge of the iris come into view over the horizon, and we see them, like specks at first, and then, as we get closer, we realise that they are not specks, but men, tiny, microcosmic men, fighting, on this strange, unusual world. So now, finally, our journey is complete as we arch around them in one final spiral, capturing the landscape once more before we rest our sights on the two men, they stand a few feet apart, both bloody and bruised, their journey within had been met with resistance as they fought to cure an infection within their team mate. But after all was seemly successful, true alliances were shown and the team suffered at the hands of a traitor, now, with freedom almost within his grasp, the traitor finds one of his former team mates escaped certain death, and a final show down must take place.

“We trusted you Howard, I trusted you! Why do this? Why kill everyone over a beta cell?”

“Fuck you Jesse, you and your little lap dogs could never understand the full picture, this beta cell isn’t just any cell, it’s life, it’s something new, and it’s worth more than money, it’s worth power. Now get out of my way, and give me the board back, or I’ll make sure this time you don’t get back up!”

He clenches his fists and grits his teeth, “Come and make me, because that’s the only way you’re going to get back!”

“If that’s the way it’s going to be!” he yells as he charges towards him, they meet in a fury of fists, left and rights, Howard drives a powerful uppercut into Jesse’s jaw, sending him sprawling on the ground, and takes control as he launches himself at Jesse, as he tries to shake off the hit he sees Howard’s advance and brings his knees up between them and forces him away, then groggily gets to his feet. Howard charges again, delivering a solid right hook into Jesse’s side, he winds him for a moment, then drives another into his left side, he feels everything splintering away, as his vision is engulfed by black and white spots, he feels another punch crash into his stomach and another to the right side of his head, and then the ground crashing into the left side of his head, as he hits it.

“I told you how it would end,” Howard says with a wry smile, suddenly the landscape shifts upright and Howard crashes to the ground. “Fuck, not yet, don’t you fucking wake up now!” he screams as the man on the table pulls the speculum free and rubs his eye vigorously, and then the eyelid slides down quickly, but for Howard, it’s like a lifetime, as he sees the eyelid ripping towards him, it’s then that Jesse makes his move and grabs Howard by the hair and slams his head into his knee, three times before sending him reeling backwards, a sea of blood trailing behind him. He looks wearily up through one eye, his other swollen and bloody, watching as the eyelid tears down towards him and he stumbles to Howard’s side and grabs the small canister from his backpack before pressing the button on the board, it lets out a redundant low buzz, he looks at the board frantically and slams the button twice more as the eyelid hits.

Day 93 – Losing It – Short Story

“Calm, cool and you follow orders and we’ll get out of this in one piece,” he says as he waves to gun around at the six of them.

“Why keep us all? Why not let some of us go so they know you’re not some crazy who’s just going to kill every single one of us?” One of them says as he gets to his feet, holding his hands in the air, sweat runs down his brow and into his eyes, and he blinks them quickly as they sting.

“Because, Burnie, you all don’t just get to walk out of here without understanding the part you played, you don’t just get to watch from the sidelines, all of you are responsible for this happening, so you all stay until I’m done!” He says as he grabs Burnie by the collar of his shirt and shoves him back to the ground. “None of you are walking away like you always do and act like you did all you could when there is always more!”

“Jake, please, this has gone too far, there’s cops out there now, with guns, they’ve probably got snipers on the roof across the street, this is stupid, put the gun down son, this doesn’t have to be like this, we can talk like normal people, we’ll listen.”

“You had your chance to listen, you had months of me telling you this was a mistake, but you ignored me, you told me this is just how things work, it’s all in my head, I’ve been working too hard. But it ain’t Will, it’s not even close. So why don’t you just sit there and shut up, if I want input or questions I’ll ask!” He says as he turns to the woman tied to the chair, and smiles. “You’re not going to continue spreading your vile voodoo around here, you piece of shit!” He says as he reaches into the backpack on the floor in front of her and pulls out a large knife and places it on a table, she looks at the knife and then at Jake.

“Don’t do this, please Jake, whatever you think is happening, it’s all in your head, please, let me go, let us all go?”

“You’d like that, wouldn’t you, Samantha, if that’s even your real name, which I’m pretty sure it’s not, well it’s not going to happen, ever since you started here there’s been something wrong, it took me a while to realise it was you, whatever you are, whoever you are, but I know you’re not right and I’m going to prove it,” he says as he pulls a jar of red liquid from the backpack and places it on the table and unscrews the lid, keeping a watch over the rest, waving the gun around with his free hand.

“What’s in the jar Jake?” She asks nervously.

“You already know, so why are you asking?”

“Jake, this is silly, don’t do this, please, you still have a chance to stop now, before you make a big mistake,” she says.

“The biggest mistake I ever made was trusting you,” he says as he grabs the knife and sticks it in the liquid in the jar. “But, I’m going to rectify that,” he says as he walks towards her and slashes the knife across her arm, Burnie and Will tackle him to the ground, the knife and the gun both tumble out of his hands and go skating across the floor, Debbie quickly grabs the gun and nervously hold it towards them, her hand shaking.

“This ends now!” She yells, Burnie pulls Jake to his feet and shoves him away.

“It’s over,” Burnie yells as Will grabs the knife and quickly cuts through the ropes tying Samantha down.

“Don’t, don’t let her out, you don’t know what you’re doing!” He yells as he charges at Will, and they all crash to the ground in a heap, Samantha rolls free and scrambles to her feet, cowering behind Debbie while Will holds Jake down and delivers two powerful punches to his face.

“You don’t know what you’re doing, you don’t know what she is!” Jake moans.

“What the fucks up with your arm?” Burnie asks as he nervously point towards Samantha’s green, blistered arm.

Samantha laughs, hysterically and they all look towards her in confusion, “I guess the charade is up,” she says as she slices the blade through Debbie’s throat, and tosses her body to the ground. “You should have listened to Jake, he knew what he was talking about!” She yells as she dives towards them.

  • Day 92 – Mirror – Short Story

    Day 92 – Mirror – Short Story

He slowly opens his eyes and lets out a grimace of pain, his head feels heavy, as if it’d been struck by something, he slowly and awkwardly raises his arm and clutches his head, he can feel a lump the size of a basketball on the side of his head, well, to him that’s how big it feels, but in reality it’s more like the size of an apple. Slowly he pulls himself up into a sitting position and the room spins violently like a merry go round and he lurches to the side and vomits up the contents of his stomach, which isn’t much. He coughs and splutters for some moments, blood and mucus lay splashed on the floor beside him, with some small remnants of unidentifiable food. He picks himself up from the flood and leans against the wall, the room before him is in taters, and worse, there are two bodies that lie on the floor a few feet from him, and both women’s dead eyes stare at him, he stands there frozen as his mind races quickly through the last few moments that his memory holds from before he woke up in the room and it turns up a blank, both women are unknown to him, as is the beaten and bloody man he sees in the mirrors reflection across the room. He stands there mesmerised and slowly walks towards the mirror.

“Who are you?” he says softly as he places his outstretched hand towards the mirror, touching the coldness of it, he pulls back and lets out a hiss of pain, his fingers tingle and he twists his head and looks at the mirror inquisitively, on the other side of the mirror the room looks bright, exploding with colours and light, he spins around and looks at the dull, dark, dank room and slowly turns back to the mirror. The two women who lie dead on the floor walk into the room, laughing, carrying shopping bags, as they go to close it someone charges in, a man, he looks familiar, and he slam the door. He smiles and pulls a knife from beneath his jacket and holds it towards the women as he yells something. He can’t hear the words as they don’t come through the mirror, only the picture seemed to cross over. The man lunges as one of the girls frantically pulls a gun from her purse and fires just as he drives the knife deep into her side, they both go crashing to the floor as the other girl screams, well, he assumes that what she does. Everything stands still for a moment before the woman runs towards the door, the man lurches forward to his feet with the other woman’s gun in his hand and fires two shots at the woman’s head, they both hit their target and she falls lifelessly to the floor like a puppet who’s strings had been cut as he stumbles backwards, and tumbles headlong into the mirror with a room shaking thud, a crack rips violently up through the mirror as the man crashes to the floor, and falls silent.

He stands there as the mirror turns dark and his bloody reflection looks back at him once more, he places his hand over the cracks in the mirror and feels the depths of the cracks. He feels their cold hands on his shoulders before they touch him and he spins around, staring into the blackness of whatever they are as they pull him under, as he realises all too late that he is the man, and now he will face his final judgment.

Day 92 – Lick Me – Short Story

He stands there, in the darkness as the air itself sparks around his naked body with electricity, and he feels it work its way up his leg, and across his groin, circling around the shaft of his penis and the then she is on top of him, her naked, cold, pale body heaves itself on to his shaft and he feels the electricity of the moment engulf his while body, she calls his name , quietly at first and then louder and louder until it’s defending and his eyes shoot open, everyone stares at him as he sits at his desk, his hand firmly gripping his throbbing erection. He quickly releases it and blushes, Miss Mason stands there in a state of shock.

“Get out, you perverted little boy,” she screams as she points towards the door, his classmates make no sound as he quickly grabs his bag and books and runs out of the classroom, giving a quick glance towards his sister Vicky as he leaves the room. He bangs his head against the wall and waits. Miss Mason is out in the hallway a short moment later, her eyes like hot daggers stabbing at him.

“My god Aaron, what the hell is going on with you, this is the third time this week you have fallen asleep in class, and let me not even start on you, you touching yourself, there is no excuse for your behaviour!”

“Miss, please, I’ve been having trouble sleeping since we moved, I-I, can’t sleep in that house, I’m, so, so sorry for what happened.”

“Tell it to Principle Wathrope and your parents.”

“Please Miss, I swear, it won’t happen again, I pro….”

“There is no excuse, I suggest you make your way to her office now, and I’ll be along after class is dismissed.”

    “Please Mi….”

“Now Aaron, I will not repeat myself again,” she says, her voice cracks with nervousness and anger all rolled into one and Aaron hangs his head and makes his way to Principle Wathrope’s office. Sally, sits at the office reception desk and looks up as Aaron walking into the office area.

    “Not again?”

He nods his head in shame.

“What did you do this time?”

“I don’t think you really want to know,” he says as he sits down on one of the seats.

“I’ll let her know you’re here, she’s been a bit agitated all day I’m afraid to say.”

“Just my luck,” he mumbles, Sally knocks on Principle Wathrope’s office door and disappears inside, coming out a few moments later. “She’ll see you now,” she says with a smile, but her eyes tell him it’s a pity smile and he drags his feet behind him as he enters her office.

“How many times has it been in the past month I have seen you here before me Aaron?” She asks as she leans back in her chair.

    “Thirteen times Miss.”

“Thirteen times, that’s ten more times than anyone else in the entire school, in fact, if I added up everyone else who attends this school I am sure, somehow, you would come out above their combined totals, do you think that is something you should be proud of?”

    “No Miss.”

“What am I going to do with you, do you have any explanation that I could attribute to your current situation? And touching your penis in class? Really? Is that how you fit in?”

    “No Miss.”

“Miss Mason wants you removed from her class, she has made, or implied that at one stage during your episode today that you mumbled her name, how am I supposed to make this go away?”

    “I don’t know Miss.”

“Is this something that you will be able to get under control, or do I need to intervene?”

    “Intervene Miss?”

“Yes, intervene, obviously your hormones are getting the best of you, you’re not sleeping, you’re obviously masturbating most the time, and you are drawing attention to yourself. So we have two options, one, we pull you out and remove you from the equation, or two, I attempt to reprogram your tiny brain and get you back on track,” she says.

“I’ll do whatever needs to be done to ensure this mission is not at complete waste of time, whatever it takes, for the empire.”

“Very well, agent nine-seven-twelve,” she says as she gets up from her chair and walks over to the office door, locking it and then walking back to her desk, standing in front of Aaron, she lifts up her skirt, and rips her panties away, he looks up at her and she smiles, “Lick me, lick me like you would a Ganzapian Fergalzer, make this body hum your name as it releases its juices,  let me reprogram you,” she says as she grabs the back of his head and shoves it between her legs.

    Day 91 – Helpless – Short Story

Two red eyes pierce the darkness, he presses himself up against the aged and crumbling brick wall as a cold shiver runs down his spine and then gets lost within the warmth of his blood that slowly congeals on the ground beside him. He clutches tightly onto his side and let’s out a grimace of pain, clenching his teeth together, he feels the blood spill out of the corner of his mouth and he lets out a breathe, saliva and blood spray like a mist from his mouth, and out in the darkness, it moves closer, as it lets out an inhuman growl.

“What are you waiting for? You’ve won you piece of shit, so why don’t you come and take your prize!” he yells.

A deep, rough laugh echoes from within the darkness and a naked man steps out, into the light of the moon and smiles.

“So full of yourself Carter, do you really think you’re some sort of prize? What if I told you I’d rather you bleed out where you sit than to waste any more of my energy on someone as pathetic as you? How would you feel?”

“Bullshit, you’ve been hunting me for weeks, months, why decide now that it’s a waste of time?” he says as he forces himself up, using the wall as support, but it collapses beneath his weight and he crashes to the ground once more in a heap.

The man laughs as he disappears back into the darkness, “You are not worth my time or effort anymore, you can sit here and suffer alone, like the nothing you are, feed the animals, fore they will come soon.”

“FUCK YOU!” Carter yells as he lies on the ground, the pain in his side slowly dissipates, but he know it’s only because he’s starting to lose more and more blood, he needs to stop the flow if he has any hope of survival. He raises his head from the ground, shaking uncontrollably as he does, he lets out a gasp of pain and his head slams back to the ground as black and white flashes blind his sight and his hearing shifts in and out of focus, like a speaker with a loose wire. He feels it grab at his leg, powerful and rough, he feels pain, it tears up into his brain like a knife and he looks up and it growls at him, and his head collapses back to the ground. He stares up into the night sky, he can feel it pull at him, he can hear his flesh ripping from the bone. He swallows a mouthful of saliva and tries to clear his throat, but he only ends up choking violently on air. The thing growls again and he feels a powerful paw slam down on him and its claws dig into his flesh. He feels a tear run down his face as he grabs handfuls of grass and dirt as it rips and tears into him, and then it’s gone and he is left lying there alone, once again. He struggles to pull himself up into a sitting position, his legs a bloody mess, but pain is no longer an issue, he looks towards the darkness and sees the red eyes again and spits a mouthful of blood and saliva onto the ground.

    “E-E-Enjoy that?”

“Please, I don’t take enjoyment in the suffering of my children, you know that, but, you did bring this on yourself, and your lesson is far from over my son because we’re just getting started.”

Day 91 – Past Tense – Short Story

She stands in front of the sink and gently runs the sponge over the cup and places it in the rack on the other side, and looks up, out the window, across the street and smiles as she feels the warmth of the sun flowing on her face. She looks back down and continues to slowly clean the remaining cutlery and plates, gently placing each one on the rack beside the sink and once more looks up and out in the street beyond her house, across the road, and into the park, and into the eyes of the unusual looking man, who is looking back at her, she feels her heart miss a beat and then increase in speed, as she stares into this mans, soulless, empty eyes. She drops the plate back into the sink and stumbles backwards, taking her eyes away from the widow for a few moments, when she looks back he is gone and she takes a step forward and peers out, through the window, towards the park, and her heart starts to get back into rhythm as she sees him nowhere in sight. She slowly moves back into place and picks up the plate again and freezes in place, looking back up to the window, standing a few feet from the window itself is the man, looking, staring, no expression on his face, no anger, no fear, no happiness, nothing, just empty, and placid, she grabs the blind and pulls it down and rushes towards the telephone next the kitchens door and screams in horror as he stands in the doorway, holding a large, hunting knife in his hand, and his bottom lip curls up.

“Quit your screaming bitch, or I’ll cut you!” he yells as she charges in and grabs her by the hair and slams she face first down onto the table. “Now this is going to be nice and simple like, you don’t have to get cut and I don’t have to be doing shit I don’t want to do? Do you understand?” he asks.

“Take what you want, please, I have nothing of any value, but whatever you want, take it, it’s your!” she screams.

“I was hoping you were going to say that, you see you might not remember me Miss Parker, but I remember you, all though high school you took me for English, never gave me the time of day though, always looking after the rich kids, not paying attention to the kids who need help.”

    “Bobby Fox?” she asks.

“I ain’t Bobby fucking Fox woman, Jerry Lewis, fuck, anyway, you never paid attention to me, but I sure did pay attention to you, a lot,” he says as he grabs her by the butt cheeks. “You see, you were one of my first bank wanks, maybe my best. Last week I got out of San Reamus after doing twenty years for aggravated assault and man slaughter, and you know what, while I was in there I found god, and he showed me all the mistakes I’d made in my life and I swore, when I got out I would right all those wrongs, starting with you,” he says as he rips her dress up and pulls down her pants. “You see Miss Parker, I should have fucked you a long time ago instead of….” He words suddenly come to an abrupt end and she can hear him choking, she slowly turns around and puts a hand over her mouth in shock, there, with his ghostly hands around Jerry’s throat is her long dead husband, Roy. Eight years ago Roy was diagnosed with a brain tumour and didn’t last more than six months, but he always told her that he would always watch over her, she knew, when she saw him in the park, something was going to happen, but she thought she was just seeing things, she falls to the floor and wipes the tears from her eyes as Jerry’s lifeless body falls to the floor, she looks up to her husband and he smiles, as he disappears.

Day 90 – Red Herring – Short Story

He rushes into the house frantically, locking eyes with her as she sits at the table, her face puffy and red, he can tell she’s been crying. Sitting in front of her is a red iPod, he glances down at it and then at the one in his hand and then back to her.

“I know this is going to sound crazy,” he says as he takes a step forward.

“Stay right there,” she shouts as she jumps to her feet. “You stay right fucking there, and don’t say a word until I ask you to!”

    “Honey, please yo…”

“Don’t you honey me, you, you piece of shit!”

“Calm down, you don’t know what you’re saying, you’re upset, you have to let me explain.”

“Oh you’ll explain all right, and you can start by telling me where the hell you were today?”

    “I was at work, you….”

“Don’t you fucking lie to me, I went to your so called work today and Jim said you flexed the day off, apparently something you do quite regularly, even naming it wife day, wife fucking day! So don’t you fucking tell me you were at work when I know that you god damn wasn’t at work! So again, and I want the truth this time, where the fucking hell were you today?” She yells, tears running down her face, he hangs his head and places the iPod on the table and sits down, before he looks up at her again.

    “Sit down,” he says softly.

    “Don’t you tell to fu..”

“Dianne, sit the fuck down!” He yells, she quickly sits, her face frozen in shock, in the twelve years she’s known Howard, this is the first time he has ever raised his voice to her, he clenches his hands into fists and takes a deep breath. “Years before I met you, I worked for the military, I handled a lot of top secret hush, hush shit, stuff even James Bond would never deal with because it was too dirty. To put it the simplest way I can, when people needed removing the team I was part of we’re deployed to achieve that result. Two years before I moved here my team was involved in a mission in Sudan, four of my team mates were killed, while me and the other three spent eight months in some shit hole getting beaten and tortured daily for information, which none of us had, but it didn’t stop them from asking, eventually through shear coincidence we were rescued by a team who were looking for someone else who were abducted by the same crew. For the next few months we all spent time recovering from our injuries, physical ones healed, the mental ones, well they’re still here. Anyway, we all received honourable discharged and were sent home, I decided to move down the cost, a fresh start, away from everything I was and become someone new, and that’s when I met you and my whole world changed, for the better of course. Three years ago one of my old team mates contacted me and asked if I was interested in taking some paid work, similar to what we used to do, I didn’t want anything to do with it at first but after a couple of months I warmed to the idea and so I started taking a few jobs here and there, just small ones, nothing that wouldn’t take me more than a few hours, nothing that would risk my life, but jobs that helped me get back in touch with who I was, am, you know, I never meant to lie to you, I just, I just didn’t know how to tell you that’s all,” he says, she sits there staring at him for some time, her mouth slowly closes and she takes a deep breath.

“Okay, I can accept most of that, I think, I mean it explains a lot really, questions I never really thought to ask, the scars and the nightmares that happen every now and then, but what I really want to know, what you haven’t even touched upon, is why in the hell do you have only the Xanadu soundtrack on the iPod?”

He hangs his head and looks at the floor and sighs, “For the eight months while they tortured us, that’s all they played, constantly, back to back, twenty-four seven, and now,” he takes a deep breath and sighs again, “and now I can’t work without it playing in the background.”

“It’s just not healthy Ben, can’t you just get another hobby?” She says, but he shows little to no acknowledgement of her words, he just stares forward. “For fuck sake Ben, look at me when I’m talking to you, or so help me god I’m leaving?” But still he doesn’t move, she screams in frustration and storms over to the power point and grabs the cord.

“Pull it out and I’ll kill you,” he says, she stops and stands there, still holding onto the cord and turns to face him, he still sits there, showing no signs that he even knows she’s there, but she clearly heard him speak.

    “What the hell Ben?”

“I said, fucking pull it out and I’ll kill you Sally, are you fucking deaf?” He says, not even bothering to look away from the TV, she feels her hands shake and drops the cord.

“What’s happened to you Ben? What’s happened, to us?”

“For god sake Sally, can’t we do this another time? I fucking watching my show!”

“You’re always watching this fucking thing Ben, you haven’t moved for the last two days except to take a piss or a shit and you’ve been carry the pad around with you when you do so you don’t miss any of this stupid fucking show, can’t you just turn it off for a few hours, so we can spend some time together, with just each other?”

    “Typical,” he grunts.

    “Sorry?”

“I fucking said, typical, I mean, it’s always like you to twist anything I actually have an interest in to be the worst thing in the world, is it because you can’t accept the fact I’m enjoying myself? Or is it just because you’re not the front and center of my attention?” He says, once again not tearing his eyes from the screen.

“You’re losing it Ben, whatever’s going on with you is just too much, if you want to talk to me, I’ll be at Becky’s,” she says as she runs out of the room and grabs her keys and bag off the kitchen table, he grabs her arms tightly and forces her to drop her keys onto the table.

“You’re not fucking going anywhere,” he says, still keeping his eyes locked in the TV. “When my show is done we’re going to sit down and talk this out, but right now, you’re….” He doesn’t get a chance to finish what he is saying as she drives the keys into his throat, he releases his grip on her and clutches at his neck, while she continues to stab him over and over again with the key, until she is finally exhausted and he is dead, she looks up and stares at the screen, the camera slowly zooms in on her face, covered in blood, and she finds she cannot pull herself away as she slowly walks over to the couch and sits down.

Day 89 – Caged Heat – Short Story

It was Tuesday, I think, I’m not really sure anymore, but let’s say it was Tuesday when she first showed up, looking like she had just walked out of a Victoria Secrets catalogue, all hot and tempting. I’ve never been one to back away from anything, and she, was not going to be the first, so I grabbed my lunch from the cafeteria and sat beside her, holding out my hand and introducing myself. She smiled and said her name was Jenny, with a little pushing I found out she had just moved here with her parents from the mainland, apparently her dad had taken a new job and forced the whole family to move down here with him, I could tell she wasn’t happy. She had to uproot her life in her final year of high school, leave all her friends and come here, to live, knowing no one. She wasn’t the nicest person I’d ever had the pleasure at meeting, sharp and rude, but not too rude, I mean, I got all that out of her in just one sitting. She was uppity though, I mean I couldn’t blame her, she was a fish out of water and apparently I was the first person besides the teachers who had even bothered to talk to her. I said it was because she was hot and a lot of people didn’t know how to act around hot people…

Day 88 – Kill Calvez – Short Story

“It’s not what you can do for your country, it’s what your country can do for you,” she says with a smile as she raises her hands in victory, the small crowd cheer in excitement as Vicky Calvez steps down from the podium and is quickly lead out the back by her staff, where she is met by four suited up and heavily armed men once she gets into the hallway.

“What the fuck is this all about?”

“Spider Miss, we sent the boys around as you said, they tracked him down and, and..”

“And what? For Christ sake man spit it out, I have better things, more important things to do that stand around here listen to your verbal diarrhoea!”

    “They’re dead Miss.”

“Spider is a useless bus boy, he does runs and we pay him in meth, he hasn’t got the capabilities to pull that off.”

“It was his friend Miss, Anton Grainger.”

“Who the fuck is this, Anton Grainer?”

“You’re not going to like this.”

“Just tell me or you’ll find yourself in a hole,” she growls as she slaps him him across the face and then grabs him by the collar.

“Ex-Army, eight years in Special Forces, spend almost all of that time overseas, he’s seen more action that Nancy down at Big Sammy’s Fanny Slappers.”

“So, now, why the heavy artillery?”

“Because this Grainger has taken four of our labs out in the last two hours looking for you?”

“Fuck, you need to clean this up quickly and quietly, I’m so close to getting this seat in the senate I can almost taste it, I won’t have my chance fucked up by some burnt out, trigger happy ex-special forces piece of shit ruin it for me.”

“Are you crazy? We need to get the fuck out of here Victoria, this guy isn’t trying to ruin your chances at being elected, he wants you dead.”

“I will not run and hide, I’ve spent too much money on this, I will…” Her words are cut short as blood splatters across her face, the man standing next to her collapses to the ground, half his head missing. Seconds later, before anyone can react another collapses, and then another, until all the hit squad are lying in pools of their own blood, Vicky dives to the ground and scrambles for cover along with the three suits that accompanied her from the stage.

“What the fuck is going on, do something!” She screams.

“We’ve got no weapons Miss!” One of the men yells back.

“Well fucking get some!” She yells as she looks down the hallway and sees Anton striding down the hallway, revolver in hand, a shot rips through one of her aids, and then another, until she is sitting in their blood, shaking. From out of the shadows he leaps, tackling Anton to the ground, knocking the revolver from his hand. Anton grabs him by the arm, somehow twisting his knee up into his armpit, causing the man scream out in agony as his shoulder pops out, with another twist Anton grips his neck and pulls it back viciously, Vicky scrambles to her feet, grabbing the revolver from the ground and points it down towards Anton, she casually brushes hair from her face, inadvertently smearing blood across it and then she smiles.

“Did you really think you could just come in here and kill me like a pathetic street monkey?”

“I never came here to kill you,” Anton replies and he stares viciously into her eyes.

“Then why come all this way? Why kill my people if you don’t intend to kill me?”

“Because I’m not the one killing you,” he says as his eyes dart to the side, she slowly moves her eyes towards what he motioned to, and all too late sees Spider standing across from her, with a revolver pointed at her head, she doesn’t even have time to comprehend what happens as the bullet rips into her head.

  • Day 87 – Knee Jerk – Short Story

Day 87 – Knee Jerk – Short Story

There’s something profoundly exhausting about the way life can throw you a curve ball in the form of something fantastic. Take my life for example, almost six months ago I found myself doing something I had always dreamed of, I quit my fucking soulless job and I made the decision to concentrate on working on the one thing I had always enjoyed my whole life, writing. I know, that’s not really that big a thing, not for you anyway, but for me, it was life changing. Two weeks after I made the move my wife left me for my older brother Dean, the fucking sleazy piece of shit, I always knew she fancied him, the fucking whore, she couldn’t keep her legs together even if she tried, unless of course I was in the room, and then it became fridge fucking city. But I rolled with the punches, I mean, I didn’t have any real choice but not to, a month after she left I found out that her leaving me was the best thing she ever did as not only had I managed to write something that people would actually be interested in, but I had written a full fucking book, in one month. I was over the moon and went out to celebrate, normally it would be me and Dean, but seeing as the piece of shit was balls deep in my wife I decided to go out by myself, live a little and see what the world has to offer me now that I was, in my own eyes, a true artist.

That’s when I met my curve ball, Sonia, five foot nothing, a nice rack and an arse that could thump against my groin any day. She, came over, swinging her little arse, and I couldn’t help but notice her. She sat down next to me and for an hour or more we sat there and talked, she had just come out of a short term relationship that had ended well before it had begun and was looking for the one, the man who would pick her up and show her the world. I’ve got to be honest, right then and there I wanted to give her everything she wanted and more, and I know where you think this is going, but it’s not, we didn’t fuck, we could’ve, but we decided it was better to see where it was going to lead. So for the next month we spent a lot of time together, between her working and my writing we found a great way to balance our time. Eventually somewhere in it all we ended up in bed and it was awesome, I knew she was going to feel good, but she felt better.

And that’s when it happened, I received a call about my manuscript, not just a hi, how are you call, this was a we want to publish your book, and we won’t take no for an answer call. Three hundred thousand dollars later and I was signed and sealed, I didn’t tell Sonia about any of it as I wanted it all to be a surprise when the book came out.  The release date was an anxious wait, I tried so hard to keep it a secret but she started to get suspicious of where I was going every few days, and who was calling me every few hours, well she was over the moon, I mean, really over the moon. We fucked hard, right there, in the hallway, and it was great.

So this morning, after the long wait, my book hit the stands and it was selling out like it was going out of style, the word my agent used was gangbusters, but I like the old words. Anyway, what prompted me to write this little piece, was I received a phone call, from my wayward wife, it seems Dean had dumped her for some trashy stripper and she had nowhere to go, and wanted to come home. I told her she was more than welcome back, as it was her home, I mean, technically we owned it together, but that wasn’t what I was looking for at the time. She broken down and swore it would never happen again and I was the only man she ever truly loved. I hung up the phone and waited for Sonia to get out of the shower and I told her all about the phone call, every word, she got a bit standoffish and asked was this it? Is this how it was going to end between us? That’s when I said it, I mean, I think I meant to, I knew I meant it, anyway, when the wife walked in the door all flowers and champagne, she left pretty quickly, because I was balls deep.

  • Day 86 – Tummy Rub – Short Story

Day 86 – Tummy Rub – Short Story

“Why would you even think that we could sort this out? You leave for who knows where and now, six months later you just turn up and expect everything to be fucking normal, to think you can just walk in and everything will be like it was, well shit stain, it’s not!” she yells as she throws the mug at him, he quickly ducks and holds his hands up in the air as she grabs another mug from the sink and prepares to throw it.

“I can explain, really I can, but not while you’re throwing shit at me,” he says quickly, she hesitates as she thinks over his words and then throws the mug anyway, and it hits him squarely on the side of the head, knocking him to the ground, she holds her hand to her mouth in shock and slowly makes her way to his side.

“I’m so sorry, are you okay?” she asks as she kneels down beside him, and suddenly feels nauseous at the sight of the blood rushing from the wound. “Oh god Jerry, that looks deep, can you….” And she throws up over him, “oh god, I’m so sorry,” she says as she slowly forces herself to her feet, as Jerry does the same, steadying himself on the table, he looks down over his shirt and then at Caroline and he begins to laugh, she stares at him confused for a moment before she too is laughing uncontrollably.

“Get your shirt off and I’ll throw it in the wash, I’m so sorry, as you can see from my condition, I’m a bit hormonal,” she says as she rubs her tummy.

“You don’t need to be, it’s me who’s sorry, can I please explain?” he says as he pulls his shirt slowly off.

“Do you really think any explanation will make what you did sound alright?”

    “Isn’t it work a try?”

“If it was worth anything you would have contacted me earlier than this, considering I’m carrying your fucking child!”

“Trust me, once I tell you what happened you’ll understand why I couldn’t,” he says as she hands him a cloth, which he presses against the cut on his head.

“Well, stop dicking around then and tell me this huge bullshit story that will somehow vindicate why two hours after I told you I was pregnant with your child you vanished into thin air for six months?”

He sits down at the table and runs a hand through his hair and looks over at her, “When you told me we were going to have a baby I was over the moon, I felt amazing and I knew that I had to set things right with my old man, you know, get him on board with all this. So I drove up to the old homestead out in the middle of nowhere, and we had a chat about everything that was going to happen over the next nine months and that’s when he suggested he should come stay with us for a few weeks, he thought maybe it would be good for everyone. So while he sorted out the animals and packed his shit, I headed back home to set it all up, along the way I got a flat tire and the car swerved off the road and into a ditch, my phone was busted in the crash so I had no way of contacting anyone, but lucky for me about five minutes later an old timer and his two sons came driving past, they helped pull the car out of the ditch and took me back to their place where they had a phone.” He says as he shuffles his feet on the floor and pulls the cloth away from his forehead, the bleeding now stopped.

“And?” she says, standing there with crossed arms.

He looks back at her and bites his bottom lip, “They didn’t have a phone as it turns out and they weren’t really interested in helping me, it turned out they’d booby trapped the road with spikes and had been abducting people along the road for the last fifty odd years, anyway, as you can imagine I was petrified and scared for my life, that’s when I was introduced to his six daughters and told that I needed to make love to each of them three times a day or they would kill me, I didn’t want to, but I knew if I was to get back to you and our unborn baby I would have to do whatever it took, so I did, for four months, everyday, I made love to his six daughters three times a day, sometimes four, slowly plotting my way out, and finally four days ago I did. I managed to escape the cupboard they kept me chained up in when I wasn’t making love his daughters, I stole one of the hundreds of cars that they had littering their backyard and I drove all the way to the police station, where they detained me for questioning since then, and only today allowed me to leave the station. I didn’t call because I knew you wouldn’t believe me over the phone, I had to do it in person,” he says as a tear runs down his face.

“Oh my god Jerry, you poor thing, I feel so ashamed of myself for thinking you had run out, I should have known something had happened, can you ever forgive me?” she says as she grabs his hand tightly and squeezes it.

“Of course I can my love, you weren’t to know, none of us were, I’m just so glad I made it back to be with you and our child, where I belong.”

“Can I ask you the only question I have?”

“You can ask me anything honey, I’m an open book.”

    “What happened to your father?”

    “Sorry?”

  • Day 85 – Selma – Short Story

    Day 85 – Selma – Short Story

He jumps up half asleep and scrambles out of bed, tumbling to the floor as the baby monitor blares with the sound of her cries, he stumbles out of the bed room and down the hallway, trying to force his legs into his pyjama bottoms as he does, and crashes to the ground in a heap, he mumbles to himself as he awkwardly gets back to his feet and opens the door quickly to his daughters room, who to his surprise is sleeping soundly. He scratches his head in puzzlement and slowly tip toes his way out of the room and gently closes the door, his dog Selma sits at the end of the hall and stares at him as he slowly makes his way back down the hall and gives her a pat on the head as he passes.

“Back to bed girl,” he says pointing out to the lounge room as he quietly crawls back into bed, he wife rolls over and lets out a sigh.

“What’s going on honey?” She asks, half asleep.

“Nothing, I thought I heard Abby crying but I must’ve been dreaming it,” he says as he lies down next to her and she throws her arm around him and he slowly drifts off back to sleep. It’s no more than five minutes later and his eyes shoot open again as he hears Selma barking down at the end of the hall and Abby crying loudly over the monitor.

“Oh for Christ sake!” He hisses underneath his breath as he lightly pushes his still sleeping wife off him and climbs back out of bed again and quickly makes his way out into the hallway, Selma looks at him and lets out a whine of desperation and digs at the carpet beneath the door and barks loudly again.

“Selma, bed now!” He yells as he storms down the hallway and grabs her by the collar and thrusts her down the hallway, she runs back to the door way and barks and digs, and again he goes to push her away, but this time she bears her teeth and growls, a deep, vicious growl, he holds his hands in the air.

“Okay girl, okay,” he says as he slowly opens the door and they both stand in the doorway, staring at the pale, ghost like figure that stands over Abby’s cot, it slowly turns around to face them, and he can feel his bladder slowly emptying itself down his leg. Selma barges into the room, barking and biting at the air and the spirit lunges backwards in fright. He rushes into the room and grabs Abby from her cot and heads back for the doorway, but the door slams shut before he can reach it, all the while Selma continues to bark furiously, and then, lets out a yelp of pain and he can just make out in the darkness her body crashing into the wall, its at that moment his wife begins banging in the door, screaming his name, “Hugh! Hugh! What’s going on? HUGH!” he goes to answer her and feels something cold touch his shoulder, he turns and looks into the eyes of the disembodied spirit and it opens its mouth as though it’s going to say something, but no words come from its mouth. He suddenly feels an easiness wash over him and feels his legs begin to give way, and he crashes to the floor as the door springs open and his wife stands there screaming as the spirit charges towards her. Selma comes from the darkness and leaps into the air passing through the entity and a deafening scream fills the room and then it’s gone, he lies on the floor still safely clutching Abby as his wife runs frantically into the room, while just a few feet away, Selma stands watch, he slowly gets to his knees and his wife grabs Abby from his arms and he places a hand on Selma’s head and give her a pat, he still isn’t sure of what just happened, but he knows, somehow, Selma saved them all.

    Day 84 – Placate – Short Story

“So that’s your story then?” He says as he takes another drag on the cigarette and blows the smoke into her face.

“Like I told you, it was all Benny, he was the one who said we should teach Jarvis a lesson, he planned it all, me and Stacy, we had no choice, he fucking scared us, he was like a completely different person than what he was normally like, he was like, secretive and shit,” She say.

“And you can take us to his body?”

“I can take you to where he said he buried it, I never saw him actually do it,” she says as she shuffles in her seat, his left eye twitches nervously and he takes another drag on the cigarette.

    “And Stacy can confirm this?”

“Of course she can, we stayed and cleaned up the mess he made while he went and buried his body,” she says as she bites her lower lip.

He stands up and butts his cigarette out in an ash tray and looks down at her through the smoke, “I’ll talk to Stacy and see how her story compares with yours and with any luck, you’ll both be free to go before the end of the night.”

“But he’s still out there, he could come after us?”

“Don’t worry Linda, we already have Benny in custody, we just need to work out where you and Stacy lie in all this,” he says as he walks out of the interrogation room.

“So, tell me, what the fuck is going on with this shit fest?” Superintendent Watson asks, his face pensive and his brow furrowed.

“It’s exactly as it looks, we just need to put the noose around their necks, but right now I’m doing what you told me to do, placate them until he gets here,” he says as he turns to the door of the interrogation and turns the handle.

“Don’t throw my words back at me Weite, you’re not clever enough to use them the way they’re supposed to be used.”

“With all due respect Steve, kiss my arse and watch me break this one,” he says as he pulls the door open, Stacy jumps as he enters the room, and instantly starts chewing on her already tattered finger nails.

“Stacy, I’m Detective Inspector Weite, I need you to answer some questions I have about the abduction and murder of Jarvis Sloan.”

“It was all Benny’s doing, he came storming in, with Jarvis all fucked up and then killed him right in front of us, God, look, can I have a smoke? I’m peeking out right here?”

    “I wasn’t aware you smoked?”

“I’m reformed okay, but every now and then I need one to take the edge off, is that okay? Or are you going to lock me away for that?”

He slides the packet of cigarettes that sit on the table over to her with a lighter and she nervously pulls one out and lights it up, taking a long, deep drag.

“So what happened after Benny killed Jarvis?”

“He went and fucking buried the body down at his old shack and left me and Linda to clean up the fucking mess, we were too scared to do anything else, but Linda’s already told you this crap, and if Benny’s said anything else he’s a lying sack if shit!”

“What makes you think we’ve talked to Benny?”

“You’ve got him haven’t you? Or are you just trying to stir the pot to see what happens?”

“I’m unsure I know what you…” He is interrupted by a knock at the door and his partner Sofia Martin pokes her head in.

“Watson wants to see you,” she says, Weite looks at Sofia and then back at Stacy.

“We’ll continue this in a minute, don’t…. Just stay here,” he says as he leaves the room, Sofia stands with an elderly gentleman, he’d have to be somewhere in his mid sixties, balding and wearing a grey woolen suit. “You’re Kline?”

“Yes, Detective, how is she responding?” he says as he holds out him hand.

“Like a New Year’s Eve party, all the old friends are popping up, and they’ve been talking to each other.” Weite replies as he grabs his hand and gives it a strong shake.

“Sorry, are you implying they are talking to each other?”

“I’m not implying, I’m telling you that’s what’s happening, well all except for Benny. As far as I can tell, we’ve had Gloria, Adam, Stuart, Linda and Stacy, and Stacy’s well aware of what we’ve been asking Linda, and that we have Benny in custody, but she isn’t aware if we’ve talked to him or not, so I’d assume he’s not speaking to anyone. I need you to give me something to work with doc, but first, I’ve got to know, why the fuck is she out of the institution if she’s this fucked up?”

“Carole sufferers from dissociative identity disorder, she’s been in and out of institutions her whole life, opting into any case study or drug trial she could be part of in the hope of ridding herself of this disease, and we thought a new treatment she had twelve months ago helped move on all her personalities until there was only Carole, whole and complete.”

“Well I hate to break it to you doc, but she’s not whole and complete anymore, when did you last see her?”

“Two weeks ago and she was coping amazingly well, in fact a little too well I guess, but it was still Carole, no one else, I’ve seen them all, had them all try to pull the wool over my eyes, and I still can’t believe she could kill someone, it just seems unlike her or the personalities I know, none of them were violent, and this Benny you say she refers to has never manifested before, are you sure he’s not re…” Suddenly a loud smashing sound comes from within the interrogation room and Weite throws open the door to find Carole, bleeding from her eyes, the table ripped from the ground and a chair hanging through the two way mirror, Kline nervously comes into the room behind Waite and stumbles back in shock.

“Don’t go anywhere doc, Benny’s got a lot of catching up to do with you!” She screams.
