“Fear is the answer, as well as the resulting display we are witnessing here. So if you are after a solution that doesn’t have its own negative impacts, I’m here to tell you that it is an impossibility.” he says as he looks over the rim of his glasses and out into the crowd.
“THERE MUST BE A WAY TO REVERSE THE MADNESS BEFORE IT SWALLOWS THE FLESH.” a voice calls out from the crowd.
He shakes his head and tightly grips the podium. “Once you have succumbed to the infection there is NOTHING any of us can do. We’ve studied over four million cases, two of them I’ve had direct contact with, and every time the same scenario takes place. The seed is sewn inside the falx cerebri by the drone, which then dies and is digested by the hosts body. That’s when we see the first sign, as every case has shown, the host sheds all their hair overnight.” He puts his hands in the air gesturing towards the crowd. “And before you ask. No, we still do not know why this takes place, but it HAS taken place in ALL cases that have been overseen by my department.”
“ISN’T THERE A WAY YOU CAN EXTRACT THE SEED BEFORE IT HATCHES?”
He shakes his head, then robustly rubs the sides of his jaw before gripping the podium once more. “Once the seed is laid, it is too late.” He holds up a finger, gesturing towards his skull. “Once the drone has entered your face, there is no stopping what takes place, doing so just makes the gestation period more volatile.”
“BULLSHIT!” someone calls out from the crowd. “IF YOU CAN KILL THE DRONE BEFORE IT LAYS ITS EGG, THEN THAT SHOULD STOP THE INFECTION.”
“Under any normal circumstances you would utilise that kind of lateral thinking as the most obvious step towards eradicating an infection of this type. But, as we have found out, it is far more devious,” he says as a photo of a woman is displayed on a large screen behind him. “This is Doctor Sadia Narayan, and she was, up until three days ago, one of the most amazing infectious disease specialists I had.” He places a finger against his lips and swallows a mouthful of saliva as he desperately tries to pull himself together. “Up until three days ago, Doctor Narayan was one of the greatest weapons in our arsenal. That was until she herself became infected.” He hangs his head down and presses play on a video which sits ready on the screen.
“Hello people of the world, my name is irrelevant at this stage, but what we are about to do is. Five minutes ago a drone Sarcophagus bug entered my body through my mouth, effectively signing my impending death.” She fights back the tears as her lower lip quivers. “W-W-We have determined through previous cases, that it can take the drone on average, six to seven hours to go from entering the body to sewing the seed. Through all the rigorous tests we have performed we are well aware of what will and what will not work when dealing with a drone. Regardless of how effective we think our procedures and quarantine levels are, WE ARE ALL IN DANGER OF INFECTION.”
He pauses the screen and turns back to the crowd.
“The video continues on for the next thirty-eight hours, as Doctor Narayan, as Sadia documents her various stages of infection, which eventually resulted in her death.” he says as he grips the podium and sneers. “Her dying words, were not for the faint hearted, but neither is what’s going to happen next,” he says as he looks up and out, towards the crowd, and removes the wig from his head as it explodes with little black beetles.
