    Day 129 – Birthday – Short Story

Twenty seven years on the outside, twenty seven years of living a life on borrowed time, the headlights flash past me and I shield my eyes, I know, too much description? Well, I’m not paying you to read this so why don’t you just piss off if it’s not working for you. The car comes to a stop and she gets out, all legs, miles of them, I swallow, she looks around the empty car park and we lock eyes, only for a moment, but in that time she smiles and marches towards me.

“Your Phelps?” she asks, the words slide off her tongue as if they were dipped in gold and encrusted with diamonds, I’m in love, pity I know she won’t reciprocate the feelings…

His sits, staring at the four glasses in front of him and blinks his eyes several times before reaching out in an attempt to pick one of them up, he fails miserably and crashes to the floor in a heap.

“Shows over Macready, go home!” A voice says from above him, he slowly and awkwardly pulls himself to his feet using the stool and the bar, he looks at the barman and sways from side to side, trying to focus his vision on him.

“Fuck you Joe, I’m still good,” he slurs…

    Day 117 – Respect – 50 Word Story Expanded

“Please sir, I was hungry, I’ve haven’t eaten in days, I didn’t want to take it, but I saw you had more…” The boy doesn’t get to finish his sentence as the man slaps him across the face, knocking him to the ground.

“Shut up child, you have made your bed, now you must pay the price with your life!”

“Rademer stop this foolishness,” another man yells as he grabs Rademer by the arm and pushes him away.

“You dare touch me like I am a lowly peasant, are you actually defending this boy?”

“He’s starving for god sake, let him take the bread, you have proven your point, killing him will do nothing!”

“It will do plenty Jensen, it will teach all the other rats out there not to touch what is mine, like you will learn…

  • Day 99 – Ghosts Of Forever – Short Story

Day 99 – Ghosts Of Forever – Short Story

She looks over to Bennett, and grips his hand tightly, he squeezes back in return and forces a smile, but his eyes tell her a different tale, one filled with uncertainty. But she didn’t expect anything different from him, for the past two days all he’s done is try and talk her out of tonight’s venture, but she hasn’t budged, and to his credit, he kept his promise, and came along with her. She turns slowly towards an older gentleman who sits at the opposite end of the table and tightly grips hold of her other hand. His grey hair recedes as it gets closer to the crown of his skull, his jet black eyebrows hang over his eyes, which remain tightly closed, and the moustache of his goatee quivers due to his lips trembling as he mutters sentences under his breathe, she feels his grip slowly begin to tighten, and lets out a small grimace of pain. His eyes shoot open and the room’s temperature drops quickly, her eyes widen in disbelief as she can not only see her breath in front of her, but she can feel the thickness of it in her lungs each time she breathes in…

Day 95 – Private Session – Black Label Short Story

She places her phone on the table and stretches her arms in the air and lets out a long, drawn out yawn, before pulling the blanket off from around her legs and walks over to the small bench that makes up the better part of her kitchen and picks up a strawberry from a plate and stuffs it in her mouth. She grabs the plate and quickly settles herself back down on the couch, opening up her laptop that sits on the table. She types in an address in the browser and waits for a few moments as the site come up before she logs into the live cams website and sits back, having another strawberry from the plate as she waits. Which isn’t very long, as an icon at the top of the screen flashes, and she leans in and smiles.

‘You’re back :)’ comes up on the screen.

“I told you I would be,” she says with a smile…

Day 89 – Hello, Officer – YouChallenge Short Story

He looks uncomfortably into the rear-view mirror, at the car behind him, it’s red and blue lights flash violently and he swallows a mouthful of air, it moves down his throat like a rock and he shuffles in his seat as the officer gets out of the vehicle and slowly makes his way towards him.

“Is this your car sir?” the officer asks.

“Yes, yes, did I do anything wrong, I didn’t think I did anything wrong, I was…” he says quickly until the officer interrupts him.

“Please sir, I’ll ask all the questions around here, you just need to answer the questions, not write a book, now, can I see your licence?”…

  • Day 89 – Caged Heat – Short Story

Day 89 – Caged Heat – Short Story

It was Tuesday, I think, I’m not really sure anymore, but let’s say it was Tuesday when she first showed up, looking like she had just walked out of a Victoria Secrets catalogue, all hot and tempting. I’ve never been one to back away from anything, and she, was not going to be the first, so I grabbed my lunch from the cafeteria and sat beside her, holding out my hand and introducing myself. She smiled and said her name was Jenny, with a little pushing I found out she had just moved here with her parents from the mainland, apparently her dad had taken a new job and forced the whole family to move down here with him, I could tell she wasn’t happy. She had to uproot her life in her final year of high school, leave all her friends and come here, to live, knowing no one. She wasn’t the nicest person I’d ever had the pleasure at meeting, sharp and rude, but not too rude, I mean, I got all that out of her in just one sitting. She was uppity though, I mean I couldn’t blame her, she was a fish out of water and apparently I was the first person besides the teachers who had even bothered to talk to her. I said it was because she was hot and a lot of people didn’t know how to act around hot people…

He lies there in a daze for a few moments before he notices her standing there, watching him in the shadows as he pulls himself up onto all fours.

    “Enjoining the s-show?” He slurs.

“I wouldn’t call it much of a show, more like white man go boom,” she replies in a thick European accent…

“I don’t know, it looks a little strange and I’m not really sure there’s such a strong market pull for this sort of stuff like you seem to think, the only thing it’s got going for it is its name.”

“Bullshit, I could call it a turd and it would still make shit loads of cash,” he says as he pushes a pile of papers across the table. “Read these reviews and tell me you can’t see money…

Day 65 – Dance Off – Short Story

As the song comes to an end the crowd stop dancing and all turn clapping vigorously towards where the band, Mars Rox and The Turtle Men stand.

“You’re all too kind!” Mars Rox says as he lets loose with one of his trademark, knee wobbling smiles and a wink of the eye. “We’re going to take a small break and will be back in ten minutes or less, and then my wayward, hip, rockin’ friends, its dance off time!” The crowd cheer with delight, as wolf whistles and screams of ‘Rox’ fill the room until generic music blares out through the speakers and Mars and his band shuffle off stage and through a side door to the back area…

  • Day 63 – Fangs For The Memories – Short Story

Day 63 – Fangs For The Memories – Short Story

We’re not sure who started the rumour about Mister Jarvis being a vampire, I know it wasn’t me or Fielding, it could have been Bailey, but none of that is really important anymore as we all pretty much have to live with what happened regardless of the role we played in it all.

Yokel Sepalovic arrived at our school ready to learn the English way, he had grown up in Germany and learnt all his English from YouTube and TV. He was surprisingly quite easy to understand and you could even manage a conversation with him, without asking him ever to repeat himself, but none of that really matters, it’s what happened when he heard about Mister Jarvis that is…

  • Day 43 – Skillet – Short Story

    Day 43 – Skillet – Short Story

He leaps from his bed, still half asleep, as the banging that is coming from beyond the bed room, from somewhere else within the house, has pulled him from his world of dreams. He stumbles out into the small hallway that connects all the rooms in the house, and his eyes grow wide with panic as he sees a light coming from beneath the kitchen door, he looks around the hallway for some sort of weapon, anything, but there’s nothing in sight. He looks over his shoulder, back towards the bedroom, before he can even contemplate going back the kitchen door opens and he freezes in fright. For five or more minutes he stands there, petrified, waiting for whoever is in the kitchen to come walking out into the hallway, but no one does. Finally he builds up the courage to take a step forward and makes his way, nervously towards the kitchen. He hears someone opening draws and moving their contents around and then closing them again, he panics as he knows someone is in there for sure now, someone is defiantly in his home. After ten or more minutes of slowly making the his way down the three meter hallway he reaches the doorway to the kitchen and slowly peers his head around the corner and his mouth drops open, searching through his kitchen cupboards and drawers is, himself…

  • Day 33 – Full Deck – Short Story

Day 33 – Full Deck – Short Story

The wind blows through the deserted streets fiercely, pushing, shaking, and tearing at anything that gets in its way, Joel peers out of the window and wonders how everything has managed to fall to pieces in the last twenty-four hours, wondering if anything will be left once the storm dies down. He turns back from the window, looking over the small group, until he locks eyes with her, for as long as he can remember there has been two things he could be sure of in life, the first was one day he was going to die and the second was his love for his wife, tonight though only one stands true, and sadly in all likely hood it will be the cold embrace of deaths arms he will find his comfort in. Nancy looks away and continues her conversation with Pete Welker, the owner of the bar, and Joel’s best friend, to be honest Joel wouldn’t say Pete was his best friend, he’d say he was his oldest, but not his best, not after what has transpired tonight anyway. Joel has known Pete since forever, their mothers went to the same birthing class and quickly became close friends and as fate would have it, they ended up going into labour the same day, its more than likely why something has always been between them, a connection, something unspoken, something Joel felt in the bottom of his very being and, he hated it…

  • Day 19 – It’s All In The Fine Print II – Short Story

Day 19 – It’s All In The Fine Print II – Short Story

Damon Welford slams the door shut and slowly steps backwards and falls to the ground in a heap, tears rolling down his cheeks, his moment of self-pity is interrupted by the sound of clapping coming from the lounge room, he nervously turns his head and his rage intensifies, sitting on the couch is a smug looking Marcus.

“You, you fucking prick, what have you done?” Damon yells as he scrambles to his feet and charges at Marcuse, who easily sends him crashing into the couch, he pushes Damon’s face into the pillows and pulls back violently on his arm.

“I gave you what you asked for, nothing more,” Marcus says as he pulls back on Damon’s arm once more before he releases the emotional Damon to sink into the couch. “You wanted to go back to before the accident, knowing what you know now and I facilitated that, the accident will now never take place and your disability will never become, isn’t that what you asked for?”

“You fucking twisted it all, this isn’t what I wanted, not exactly!”

“Well, I’m sorry it isn’t exactly the way you wanted it, but it is what you asked for, and it’s what I gave you, the agoraphobia, that’s  not my problem, it wasn’t part of the deal, had you asked me to cure your agoraphobia you would still be sitting in your chair, jerking off to teenage girls on the internet.”

“Fuck you, fix it, take me back!”

“Sorry, that’s an impossibility, the stream has been changed, going forward is just impossible,” Marcus says. “But we have grander things to achieve, you and I.”

“What the hell are you talking about, you expect me to help you now, well, that’s not going to happen, I’m going to sue you for everything, and believe me I’ve got the money to make the fight hurt you, more than it will hurt me.”

Marcus laughs, “You had the money, when you were in your little den, feeling sorry about your little legs being all useless, but here, today, you have nothing but what your father gives you. Or have you forgotten that the accident that took your legs also removed everyone who stood in your way to the fortune your family made? Without the accident your father, mother and older brother still live, so you have nothing.”

“You son of a fucking bitch you played me!” Damon yells as he forces himself to his feet, and Marcus shoves him, face first, back into the pillows of the couch.

“You got what you wanted, now I take my payment, but, like I said, it’s nothing from you, I’m going to take your fathers fortune, and I’m going to leave you with nothing, sure I used you, but not because I needed what you had, you’re just collateral damage Damon, nothing more, nothing less,” he hisses in his ear and shoves him down as he walks across the room.

“You won’t get anything, I’ll tell him everything, he’ll never deal with you, he’ll crush you and I’ll be the one laughing.”

“It’s too late, the deal is almost done, and you, well, you’re not going to be bothering me one little bit, I mean, you’ve got a lot of things to deal with, and that agoraphobia, that’s got to be a bit to get on top of, I mean, do you know it sends some people so far over the edge they commit suicide?”

“Are you threatening my life now?”

Marcus laughs again, “I don’t need to threaten anything, I keep promises, that is all, nothing more, nothing less, I have this gift you see, well it’s not really a gift, it’s something entirely different, but it gives me the ability to travel through time, up here,” he says tapping his head. “All the memories, experiences, fears and dare I say, damage, that is done to the old noggin, well it follows you everywhere, like a bad smell, you can’t escape it, you can’t change it, you can only live with it, of course with some tweaking things can be eased, or as in your case, increased,” he says with a smile.

“What, what do you mean increased? What the fuck have you done to me?” Damon yells as he rushes at Marcus and grabs him by the collar and slams him into the wall. “What have you done to me?”

Marcus smiles, “You’ll find out soon enough,” he says as he raise his arm and looks at his watch. ”In fact, you should be finding out, right about… now.”

Damon releases his grip on Marcus and falls to the floor screaming, clutching his head, “What h-have you d-d-d-done to m-m-me?” he yells.

“Nothing, well actually, not nothing, I mean, in reality I’ve done a lot, but in your case, I really, didn’t do a lot, I just gave you a little something to help the walls close in, to help the sanity slip further away.”

    “Why, why d-d-d-do this? I-I-I-I’ll gi-give yo-ou-you it a-a-all, p-p-p-le-please,” Damon screams.

“No, you won’t, we’ve been down this road before Damon, you may not remember it, but I do. That’s the glory of moving through time my friend, you can always hit replay.”

Day 13 – Short Cut – YouChallenge Short Story

He pushes the bikes throttle to the maximum as he tears down the street, his heart thumping in his chest viciously as he rides more on instinct than awareness. The numbers displayed on the inside of his helmet continue to count down and he tries to push the bike harder, faster, but he knows he is too far behind the clock now, and he only has one option, he has to go left, through the Unclassed Zone. He slams the bike around the next corner and keeps the throttle down as he powers through the gates with a crash, the front wheel wobbles violently as he tries to regain control and that’s when he spots them, limbering towards him, and he closes his eyes tightly as he slams into them, they are thrown left and right as the bike goes crashing to the ground, and the rider rolls with the crash and quickly scrambles to his feet as more of them come from out of the darkness. He pulls out a metal rod and charges towards his still purring bike as one of the three he ran into lunges for him, he smashes it across the face with the rod, knocking it to the ground, and pulls his bike back up onto it’s two wheels…

  • Day 11 – All Good Plans – Short Story

Day 11 – All Good Plans – Short Story

She digs her fingernails into the floorboards and drags herself closer towards the doorway and looks over her shoulder in desperation, over at his still unmoving body that lies a few feet away. She reaches out again and drags herself closer to the door as a foot comes stomping down onto her hand and she screams in agony, he is on her quickly, grabbing a large handful of hair he smashes her head into the floor several time before she goes limp.

“Fucking bitch,” he says as he drives a boot into her side. “Thought you could fuck with me, thought you could make me suffer, well suffering is the only thing you’re going to be doing now you piece of shit!” He says as he drives another boot into her.

    Five minutes earlier…

She smiles at him as she brushes the hair from her eyes, “So, what do you think?”

“I’m not sure, it’s a big risk,” he says as he looks up from the piece of paper. “I mean, I can see you’ve done all the calculations, allowed for everything that could go wrong. But there’s still so many things that could not work, we don’t need more pressure right now, not like this.”

“Don’t be a chicken, there’s no way this can fail, not if we follow the plan.”

“Your plans not full-proof, there’s so much that could go wrong, we could end up losing everything and then what are we going to do?”

“We’ll work it out,” she says as she gets up from her seat. “We just can’t keep going on this way, talking about what could be, let’s just fucking do it.”

“I don’t know Sammy, we could totally fuck it up, it needs to be something simple, something where we have total control, I just think your plan is too crazy to work.”

“Bullshit,” she says as she pushes him. “This is a sure fire plan Tommy, there’s no way it could go wrong!”

“Sammy, baby, we…” A loud crash comes from the room opposite and they both freeze in place, and stare towards the doorway. Tommy picks up a revolver from the table and looks at Sammy as he slowly gets up from his seat and makes his way towards the door.

“Don’t damage him, he’s not worth anything dead.”

“I know alright, just shut up,” he says as he places a hand on the door handle and takes a deep breath before he pulls it open, and they both stare into the darkness beyond, but it’s all too late that Tommy notices the wooden post that lurches from out of the darkness and crashes down on to his skull, sending him crashing to the floor in a heap. Sammy turns and heads frantically towards the other doorway as the man steps out of the room and hurtles the post at her, it cracks her in the back of the head and she hits the floor with a violent thud. Desperately she reaches out and digs her fingernails into the floorboards as she tries to drag herself to the doorway.

    Now…

Sammy awakens to a world of pain and confusion, for a few moments she just sits there in silence as her brain tries to fill her in on what’s happening, but it’s when she tries to move she finds herself bound tightly to a chair. She looks up frantically and sees a bloody and beaten Tommy tied to a chair opposite and in-between them he sits, with the revolver in his hand and a smug smile on his face.

“I wouldn’t worry too much about lover boy there, he’s not coming back anytime soon, I’d worry more about yourself, because sugar, I’ve got so many things to show you,” he says with a grin.

Day 01 – One Love – Short Story

He swings the shovel violently towards the two men, and blood and dirt flicks off the blade and splashes into the wet ground with the rain.

“I told you to go, I won’t tell you again!” He yells.

“Samuel, son, for fuck sake, she gone, it’s not her anymore. You have to let us do what must be done, you’re endangering everyone with your stupidity!” his father yells back as he avoids the shovels blade as Samuel swings it violently towards him again.

“You’re wrong, you’re all wrong, she’s still in there, I can see it, just leave us alone!”

“We can’t do it, this is for the best little brother, and I hope someday you will see that!” His brother yells as he charges at him and they both go crashing into the ground. Seeing the opportunity his father makes a mad dash for the door as the two struggle in the mud, two shots ring out in the house and then silence and they both freeze. Samuel pushes himself free and scrambles to his feet and charges frantically towards the door, when a scream erupts from inside that forces him to come to a stop, not her scream, but his fathers. He stands in the door way as his brother rushes to his side and a sea of red gushes from within and covers the two brothers.

For a few moments they both stand there in silence, frozen in fear and then Samuel’s brother lets out a cry of anger and runs into the house, Samuel stands there as he hears his brother’s cries get louder, changing from anger to pain in mere seconds, and then only the sound of the rain remains until it starts, the chewing, the tearing, the ripping. He looks up into the bleak night sky and lets the rain envelope him in its vacuum of violence, hiding the tears that runs down his face, and he collapses to his knees. He looks towards the doorway, into the darkness of the house and he hears it again, and he gets to his feet and reaches into the door way and pulls a control pole from around the corner as he slowly makes his way into the room.

“It’s ok honey, time to go back to bed, you’re still not looking the best,” he says to her, her face covered in blood, her once soft blue eyes now a cloud of grey, with only a hint of colour. She growls at him and rushes forward, but he manages to manoeuvre the noose of the control pole over her head and quickly tightens it down, pushing her back against the wall.

“Now come on honey, you know I need to clean this mess up, we don’t want any of these two coming back to cause us problems like the last ones did.” She grunts furiously at him, and he forces her towards a stairway that leads up to the next leave of the house. She fights him the whole way, hissing, spitting and growling at him, but he keeps his eye contact with her all the while and only smiles.

“I know honey, its OK, I know. It’s time, I just need to get it all ready,” he says calmly as he forces her down a dimly lit hallway, towards a room at its end. “You just get some sleep, and when you wake I’ll have it all ready, I promise.”

She stops fighting him and stands there, staring at him, her head tilts to its side as if for a second she understands his words and then lunges forward again aggressively. He shoves her into the room where an open cage sits in its center. They struggle back and forth for a few moments as both of them try to gain the upper hand, but his determination wins out as he give her one last almighty push and she goes tumbling backwards. Quickly he releases the noose from around her neck as she crashes into the cage, and he slams the door shut behind her. Instantly she lunges forward, trying to grab at him, banging ferociously on the cage as he locks the padlocks in place. Once all of them are locked he throws a blanket over the cage and collapses against the opposing wall, wiping the blood, sweat and dirt from his face, and that’s when he hears a murmur from down stairs followed moments later by movement. He forces himself to his feet, and tightly grips the handle of the control pole as he rushes downstairs, before him stands his father, blood dripping from his torn face, his jaw hanging from his skull, held in place by fatty tissue and flesh, he gargles and lets out a low growl. Samuel drives the control pole down upon his head viciously and knocks him to the floor, leaping over the reanimated corpse of his father he makes a mad dash for the shovel that leans up against the door way, he spins around as his father tries to get to his feet and drives the shovel down into his skull several times until it’s nothing but a mushy pile of bones and blood. He feels something brush against his leg as his brother violently begins to spasm on the floor, Samuel does not allow a moment to think of what he is about to do, for what he has already done, and drives the shovel down upon his brothers skull as well, he rests again, tears streaming down his face.

The candles burn brightly in the room as he places the cassette tape into the player and presses play, the upbeat, soft rock song begins to play and muffles the sound of the rain striking against the roof violently. He places a hand on the blanket and quickly pulls it off. She lets out a volatile hiss as she shakes the cage violently, and he just sits in front of it and smiles at her.

“Remember this song?” he says as he removes one of the padlocks from the cage door. “God it seems like it was a life time ago, all the crazy stuff that happened when we first met. I mean seriously, it was rough from what I remember, your Dad hated me, your Mum tried to hit on me, and so did your brother,” he says with a laugh as he removes another of the pad locks. “They’re never going to let us be alone, they’re never going to back off, and I’m tired honey, I can’t keep this fight up anymore. I’ve killed so many people, people I loved, you love, and I’ve done it all for you,” he says as a tear runs down his face as he removes the final pad lock and the door swings open. “Let’s live this life together, like we planned,” he says as he holds out his arm towards her, turning his head away in preparation. Softly and slowly she takes hold of his hand and he turns to face her, they sit there for a few moments, looking into each others eyes as their song plays its final few chords.
