The crucifix drops to the floor seconds before Maurice’s lifeless body does. Sheena bares her teeth while laying a slathering of aggressive growls and hisses, as Constantine proudly dances around the ballroom, dragging Selena’s decaying corpse with him.

“Don’t be so selfish pelican, what we do here today will not only make a tomorrow worthy of yesterday’s sacrifice, but it will also get us far more than we deserve today.”

“Speak for yourself,” she hisses through clenched teeth.

“WHAT!” he bellows, spinning skilfully towards a unflattering crescendo, as he tosses Selena’s body to the floor without care and rushes at Sheena, stopping mere centimetres from her. “Do you think you are better than me? Do you think you are worthy of more than I am?”

“Of course I do!” she scoffs with thrusting ignorance. “Why do you think we’re both here, in such a uninhabited area? Or did you think it was you that brought me here?” she says with a wry smile growing across her crimson lips.

    A Simple Unchanging Fact

“There is little that can be done for someone like you, so we are unfortunately stuck with the decisions that you have chosen for us to follow, and in that OUR fate is what it is, this so is yours.” she says with a wiry smile delicately drawn across her face, missing her poorly proportioned lips on several different points.

“Y-Y-You m-make it sound like some sort of t-threat.”

She laughs in unison with a million other variations of herself that inhabit the same flesh sack, before her sunken eyes roll freely in their pool table like sockets. “That is exactly what this is, for THAT is why I am here before you. The landscape that changes with each passing moment, continues to change, yet the drum beat that plays evermore, never stops. We are that drumbeat, and WE are the only way,” she snarls with blatant disregard for thing nor fathom.

“B-B-But I-I-I, I only followed what y-you told me to d-d..” he doesn’t get to finish his words, as she moves far quicker than her broken body should allow her to, and heaves him high into the air.

“DID I NOT SAY THAT WITH EACH PASSING MOMENT EVERYTHING CONTINUES TO CHANGE! DID I NOT SAY ALL THAT CHANGES, CHANGES AGAIN REGARDLESS OF CHANGING BEFORE! THE ONLY THING PERPETUAL IS ME, AND ME ALONE!”

The room ebbs and flows with a vibrating energy that sends shivers up and down each of the small workforce’s backs. Donna turns with a motion that resembles less of a fluid movement and more of a disjointed parody of animated glory. Steve looks across at her and fells the blood quickly run from his face. He convulses forward without warning as he feels the meagre breakfast he had just a few short hours ago surge upward, and in a desperate panic he slaps his hand against his mouth, only for it to explode from either side, spraying Duncan and Sam who sit beside him equally.

He sits silently, staring forward with wide eyes as the blood that escaped his face moments before rushes back, this time flushing his cheeks with their warmth.

“W-W-WHAT THE FUCK!” Duncan screams, while Sam desperately cups his hands in front of him as he tries to catch his own vomit, but instead it spills from his hands and empties onto the desk in grotesque fashion while Donna watches like a statue.

Duncan slaps Steve across the back of the head with careless intent. “WHAT THA FUCK BRO!” he cries loudly.

As his vomit ridden lips tremble, he raised a shaking hand towards Donna.

    “Please David, I…”

“STOP LYING TO ME, AND JUST TELL ME HOW FUCKING LONG I’VE BEEN IN THIS PLACE!”

They stare at each other for several moments before Carl lets out an exhausted sigh and sits back in his seat. “You’ve been here seventeen years,” he says softly.

David’s eyes widen and he stares with an almost vacant gaze at Carl for several moments as his lips tremble. “S-S-Seventeen f-fucking YEARS!” he stammers, slowly elevating into a roar.

“I said there was more to this story, but you instead decided to ignore the infidelities of those who came before you and toss me to the side with the everyday garbage. Now you stand her begging me in my new kingdom for assistance. Now you come to the place my feeble frame ended up, seeking my wisdom.” he snarls, baring his rotten teeth proudly. “I ask you to pay penance. I ask you to give the gatekeeper his payment. I ask for blood.”

    “I-I-I, I can’t g-give you what I no longer have,” Rheat stammers.

“I’m not asking for your blood fool, I can see your veins are tainted with the seed of technology and long past flowers.” he spits with a wicked grin. “I want you to go out into the world you’ve claimed as you own and bring me back gallons of the finest red velvet you have ever drained from those you love, and then I will tell you how my story ends, and in that you will then know how to win.”

“B-B-But those you ask me to sacrifice, a-are the ones I WANT to save.” he scores with trembling lips.

    The book slams shut.

For several long minutes the room sits in silence, all wide terrified eyes lay transfixed upon Cheryl. She drawers the ticking minutes in her stride, as she menacingly looks around the room, locking eye contact with each one of them. She then let’s out a carefree laugh, causing some of them to jump in their seats with fright, which in turn causes her laughter to shift in octave. With a devilish look painted across her face she closes the book that sits open on her lap and tosses it to the ground with dramatic flair. The slap of the book’s canvas on the tiled floor echoes through the makeshift classroom that crashes over them like a wave, sending them into a further panic.

“ENOUGH!” she screams as she thrusts herself to her feet and brings the room to a silent standstill once more. Staring towards them as a matador would their bull, smug and full of bravado. It’s then that a gentle sobbing breaks the silence, causing her face to twist violently as she casts an unrestrained look of aggression across the room. When she eventually spies the owner of the cries she moves like a ridiculously animated cartoon character, stopping before the weeping child.

“SILENCE!” she bellows, her flame laced words burn the child like a toaster would bread.

“HE’S NOT PAWN PIECE IN A GAME OF CHESS YOU’VE LOST, HE WAS OUR GOD-DAMN FRIEND!” she spews venomously at him, as she throws her arm around like a showcase model from The Price Is Right, on cocaine.

“And we’ll mourn his death after we get out of this mess, OKAY!” he hisses through clenched teeth.

“And HOW the hell are we going to do that? Fitz’s eyes widen with terror as the crack breaks through the table tops edge and a piece of glass lads roughly on his lap. He looks up into Luka’s smiling face as a sea of sweat pours down his brow.

“P-P-Please I-I-I,” he swallows a desperate mouthful of air before clearing his throat and squinting like a blind man towards Luka. “I never meant to disrespect a-anything yo-you’ve done.”

“Then what did you mean to do?” Luka asks with a blank expression upon his face as he flicks a toothpick around in his mouth.

The doorway before him vibrates from somewhere beyond the other side, followed seconds later by his number glowing brightly.

He lets out a stuttered sigh of relief as the doors open, only to suck it back in as he stares into his own eyes.

For several long moments they silently stare at each other, until the elevator once again signals its intent, and begins closing its doors. From inside its carriage Edward places a hand on the door, and it reopens.

“We can’t miss this one. Time is of the essence, now more than ever.”

“Bu-But the fabric of time ha…”

    “C-Can we?”

Without thought or focus she lets out a muffled cry as they tear Corey limb from limb, feasting on him wildly. Then once more the pack freeze, and eyes shoot across towards her. Tears cascade down her cheeks as a sea of dead eyes stare at the petrified Sally. Paul proudly steps forward, taking the stance of a rock and roll guitarist who is in the mists of playing a powerful solo and raises a gatling gun towards the frozen field of decaying humanoids. Then with a smarmy smile he gives Sally a wink and tightens his finger around the trigger, only to find nothing happening.

His mouth trembles as a small sea of sweat cascades down from his top lip. “I-I-I,” he draws back a desperate breath as he clears his throat then spits a wad of mucus dressed in a river of saliva. He smiles broadly, freely displaying his mouthful of rotten teeth. “I wasn’t looking for a response, it’s just the ritual of it all. I can’t do one thing without doing the other, for it will not allow the process to go forward, and if I cannot go forward, then I am redundant in my position. Can you understand that? Can you see why it is important for the structure of it all that I follow the pathway set before me by those that came before you?”
