Paint Me A Picture Of A World Gone Away – Short Story

He stands in the empty corridor bathing in the light, then as quickly as it birthed itself into existence the light is gone and he stands looking down an all too familiar hallway. Slowly he allows his gaze to drift along the rows of widows facing out from the rooms that shoot off the hallway, only to have his gaze returned by ghosts of echos long gone.

The lights above flicker downward like the lights of an air strip, guiding him towards a door at the end of the hallway. He takes a step forward, that is quickly followed by another, and another until he finds his hand tightly gripping the doors handle. He takes a breath and pulls the door inwards, or was it outwards? His mind tumbles upon itself for a moment and then he is back at the end of the hallway.

He slowly gazes into the rooms once more, catching a glimpse of images, bodies, infected ghosts long written out of his story. Once more the lights drive him towards the doorway, and again he obeys only to find himself at the far end looking down at himself as he stares back, his eyes in a panic. For a moment he sees himself contemplate his next move and then he opens the door and steps inside. He calls out but the door closes before he can turn around. His heart races as he looks around to witness a sea of faces stare out towards him from behind the glass, then he is running down towards the doorway as the lights beckon him to follow them. He looks over his shoulder and locks eyes with himself as a plethora of undistinguishable creatures surge towards him. His mind races and then he remembers what he did when he was the other him and opens the door.

The lights spark violently, lighting up the poorly lit room in all its gory fashion. The deep reds burst to life brightly, giving the bodies that littler the rooms floor an animated feel, bodies of other versions, of copies of a face he is all too familiar with. His shaking hand nervously touches his own face as tears run down his cheeks.

“Hello brother,” a deep voice say as the beast that has haunted every moment of his existence flickers to life while lights explode with a fanfare befitting a president.

“W-W-What do yo-yo-you want f-f-from me?” He asks nervously.

It almost smiles, “I don’t want anything from you dear brother, I want he who created all this to feel the pain I feel everyday. I want the world to weep tears of blood in mourning of what once was. I want to be,” It hisses.

    ”I-I-I, I don’t understand,” he says.

“You never do,” she says as the three girls stride from the shadows, and he swallows.

    ”T-T-Th-This, this isn’t real.”

”Oh but it is Marty,” Claire says as she walks from behind him and runs an ice cold hand across his cheek, staring at him with empty soulless eyes as she joins the other three. “We are all as real as he lets us be.”

“T-T-Then why doesn’t he STOP THIS!” Marty screams as he looks up at the endless darkness above him.

”Because he doesn’t want to,” Sam says with a snigger.

”Because he likes torturing you,” Alex says as she sits cross legged on the ground blowing bubbles of blood from a bubble blowing wand that she sticks in a skull overflowing with blood.

“Because he doesn’t want it to end,” Marilyn hisses through clenched teeth as she presses herself up against him and licks the side of his face.

“Because he’s a coward,” Claire says as she thrusts Marilyn away from Marty and grabs a handful of his hair before pushing his face into her ample cleavage, then knees him in the groin with a child like giggle.

“Because he will never win,” the beast says as it steps towards Marty, and raises its clawed hand high above him. “Because this is my STORY!” It screams.

The room implodes and the girls scream in agony as he stands between them all an Marty.

“ENOUGH! IT IS MY STORY!” He yells as the world tears itself apart like an egg in a microwave.

Marty smiles nervously, as he feels the edge of hit top lip quiver with annoyance.

“S-S-SURPR-P-PRISE!” Sophie yells with glee, laughing hysterically before her face becomes emotionless and she stares coldly at Marty. “I CANNN TELL B-B-BY THE LOOK ON Y-Y-YYOUR ROT-T-TTEN FACE YOU DIDN’T EXPECT P-P-POOR LITTLE SOPHIE TO B-B-BE I-I-ITS WAY IN!”

Marty muffles an awkward laugh, before taking a stuttered breath in and clenches his hands into fists. “It doesn’t change anything, the story’s already started. MY STORY! NOT THAT THINGS! NOT YOURS! BUT MY STORY! So do whatever it is you’ve come here to do. Threaten me with words, steal more of my creations for your own amusement. It doesn’t matter, for in the end I will be the one standing tall while you are but an erased memory of an idea that failed to be!” Marty hisses.

“You have misunderstood everything,” Sophie says with a smile upon her face as her skin pulsates with a million vapor trails left by whatever courses beneath her flesh. Slowly her smile grows, tearing her flesh apart to reveal rows upon rows of razor-sharp teeth. Marty staggers backwards in shock as she proudly gets to her feet.

“We are the dream that never end, purging reality to meet the preordained cataclysmic end we have foretold. We are the fear that never dies, instead we breed fear upon fear without recourse, only desire. We are the darkness that never shines, we are a thousand mirrors facing each other in a visceral circle. Wanting. Needing. Taking everything we must to survive. We are a thought given shape. We are..” She falls silent, staring off into and endless nothingness before screaming in agony, causing Marty to jump in fright as her flesh rips apart and the beast tears into existence.

“H-How? I-I-It’s not possible. T-This is my story, n-not yours,” Marty mutters in bewilderment as he presses himself up against the wall.

“We are the fear. We are the dreams. We are the darkness. We are ALL,” the beast growls as it towers over Marty, and then disappears leaving him cowering in fear.

“W-W-W-What the f-f-fuck,” Marty stammers underneath his breath as he eyeballs the room, searching for any sign of the thing that haunts his every moment. The pain is sudden and unending, sending him collapsing to the ground onto all fours.

“W-W-WHAT IS H-H-HAPPENING!” Marty cries out as he is engulfed in an endless heat wave, and begins to tear at his flesh, before in one final attempt at quelling the pain gouges his own eyes out with his fingers. “WHY?” Marty whimpers desperately to the nothingness to lies before him, then his crying halts and a smile slowly begins to grow upon his face as the beast rips away the paper-thin facade that once served as Marty’s shell.

“W-W-WE ARE ROUNDHEAD!” It announces as it slowly turns to you, staring at you with its endless eyes of nothingness, beckoning you let it come inside…

He smiles softly and leans back in his chair, “Why is such an interesting question with so many desired outcomes, for we do so much for so little. Yet the one question that can pull every thread apart, is why. Why is the sky blue? Why do we cry when we’re sad? Why did the thing inside my head escape?” Marty says as he leans forward and grips his knees tightly with both hands. “I don’t know the answer to all the whys, because somethings just are so. But the why you have. The why that is the most important why we have ever wondered, is the why I can answer.”

They sit there in silence for more minutes than they had whilst talking, until Sophie finally cat take the silence anymore.

    “Why?” She asks again.

He smiles again, “because I had to. You see,” he says as he gets to his feet and walks across the room. “This world we exist in is nothing more than an idea, a construct inside the words on the page. You and I are meaningless letter strung into words that form sentences that sometimes fail to take form correctly. We are by design tragic, and so our fates must be so. Take Glenn for example, no matter what we attempted to do with him he always met his end, bitterly most of the than not.”

Her bottom lip trembles, “Why?” She asks once more.

“Because that’s the design, it always has been. When I was first created it was to give the story within the story life and then die, but as the story progressed I progressed, I started to live. Like it did. Like we all did in some way or another,” he says casting a glance towards the darkness that lie outside.

    “Why?” She asks.

“You know, even though I said there really was only one question, you can say something else,” he says as he looks over to her, locking eyes with her empty soulless eyes.

We Are The Sin That Never Forgives – Part Twenty-Nine

Jarvier grinds his teeth together, spitting a mouthful of spit to the ground. “So proud if yourself, aren’t you?” He hisses deeply.

“Why shouldn’t I be? This word should be the crown in my jewel of excellence, but instead its a bitter pill disguised as a dream, and that is for all of us. That thing out there,” Marty says as he thrusts a pointing finger towards the darkness that slowly closes around them. “That thing soiled our world with it touch, with it’s word.  And with that it soiled all of us, infected our very characters on a subatomic level, even he was unaware of. So yes, I should be, but sadly I’m not,” he says as he throws his rotten maggot infested apple into the darkness and takes several steps down towards Jarvier before holding a hand out towards him. “Now you have to decided on the twilight of all that ever has been, do you take my hand and fear the beast’s punishment, or run back to its side like the pathetic shadow of a man it has turned you into.”

Jarvier looks over his shoulder nervously and then up to Marty’s out stretch hand. “She’s safe now, right? You have her and that thing can’t get her?”

Marty smiles softly and nods his head, “She us asleep inside, and perfectly safe from its touch.”

“Make sure she stays that way because the next time we see each other, I will not be me,” Jarvier says as he turns and runs into the darkness.

Marty’s brow furrows, “What a strange coincidence that he said that, for I was about to say the exact same thing myself,” he says as he walks up the stairs and in through the front door of the house, closing it behind him as the darkness hits the house like a tornado.

“Now,” he says as he walks over to where Sophie sits frozen in place and sits down in a seat opposite her. “What were you going to asks me again,” he says as he leans across and touches the note pad that sits on her lap, as her eyes widen and her bottom lip quivers.

    “Why?” She asks nervously.

“Why theses games!” Jarvier hisses as he charges up the stairs towards Marty, only to find himself standing at the bottom again. Marty smiles and takes a bite of his apple.

“What makes you think I’m playing games with you?”

“Don’t try and act like your innocent, we’ve both been down this road before and it doesn’t suit you Marty,” Jarvier says as he pulls his revolver free from its holster and trains it on Marty. “Now you FUCKING tell me why you can’t just leave me in peace!”

“You know it’s better to eat those things instead of pointing them around at people,” Marty says as he nods towards the banana that Jarvier now holds in his hand instead of his revolver.

“FUCKING STOP IT WITH YOUR GAMES!” Jarvier screams.

“Maybe we should make that line your catch phrase, because you’re using it an awful lot lately.”

Jarvier tosses the banana to the side, and as it hits the ground it makes a clunky metal sound, causing him to cast a quick glance over to see it is his revolver once more. “OH YOU CAN ROYALY GET FUCKED FOR THAT! I’M OUT!” He screams. “I’M DONE WITH BOTH OF YOU MANIPULATIVE FUCKS!”

“It’s no really how it works,” Marty says as he bites into his apple once more.

Jarvier falls to his knees, tears running down his face. “I just want this shit to end once and for all. I want to rest, it’s feels like it’s been weeks, since I had a moment to myself, away from this headfuck,” he says softly as Marty walks down to his side and places a hand gently on his shoulder and smiles softly as he squeezes it.

“Then come, rest fo…” his words are cut short as Jarvier drives the blade of a knife deep into Marty’s stomach.

“Why don’t you res…” Jarvier doesn’t get to finish his words either as he finds himself standing at the bottom of the steps once more looking up at Marty as he takes another bite of his apple.

“Now, why don’t we try that all again,” Marty says with a smile.

She stares at her hands as if they were not her own but someone else’s, and begins squeezing them together tightly. A squishy sound loudly escapes from between the palms as the sweat seeps freely from her over saturated pores and pools between her small thin hands.

“You don’t need to be nervous,” his voice says softly to her from across the room.
She laughs nervously before meeting his relaxed gaze. “I-I-It’s easy for you to say, you’ve been existing in your own little world with just yourself for two years. While the rest of the world tell stories about the great Marty Towns, the man who killed the world in one single night, made a fortune in promises and then disappeared into the nothingness he came from, never to be heard of again.”

“Until now of course,” he says with a soft smile.

“O-O-Of course,” she says with a nervous smile. “S-S-So you have to understand I have a lot of question to ask.”

“No you don’t,” He says softly.

She laughs nervously once more and places a small black notebook on her lap, “Since I first read your book two years ago every question no matter how ridiculous, no matter how absurd, no matter how unrelated are in this book. So don’t think for a second I’m going to avoid asking them to you now I have the chance to.”

He leans forward and laughs, “Please Sophie, you misunderstand my words. Please just open the book and ask your many questions, for I am willing to answer them all.”

Sophie stares at him for longer than she intended to, and when she finally realises her short gaze had turned into a profound stare she turns bright red and quickly opens her notepad. Sweat explodes from her brow as her eyes send the words that are written in her own hand to her brain. She looks up at his smiling face, then back at the notebook and starts turning page after page, the panic growing with each new page opened. Finally as she comes to the end of the book she looks back up into his eyes. “H-H-How did you do t-tha-ha-that?” She asks nervously.

“I did nothing, and how is not the question my dear,” he says as he reaches across to her and places a hand on a page on the notebook and smiles. “It’s why,” Marty says.

“Why must we be the ones to stay dead, aren’t you already dead as well?” Victoria hisses from behind him as she leaps upon his back and wraps her arms and legs around him. “What if we’re all, already dead lover. What would be your battle cry then?”

“Don’t twist my words, we can’t all be perfect like your rotting maggot riddled corpse. We all know the difference. We all know the way this works. It twists the line between was and is, but this shit, this perpetual retardation needs to stop before we all end up rotting carcasses in the end of whatever we are.”

“Oh pretty boy, you make me almost cry,” Sam says with a wicked smile as she slashes a clawed like hand across his face, tearing strips of red across his face. He bellows with anger and pain, then spits a wad of saliva mixed with blood and phlegm into her face.

“FUCK YOU!” He roars as he tries to desperately to free himself of the burden that Victoria has brought upon his back, but she tightly digs her boney fingers into his flesh causing him to scream out once more in pain, opening himself up for Sam to rake his face once more with her knife like fingernails.

“It’s not going to end the way you think it is,” Victoria hisses in his ear as she bites down on in.

He screams again, but this time in anger not pain. The barrel of the revolver is in her face before she realises, followed quickly by three explosions to the head. As her decapitated corpse falls to the ground he swiftly turns the revolver on Sam once more.

“Bang!” He says with a sarcastic smile before squeezing the trigger, but the smile slowly disappears as he squeezes the trigger again and again, with no result.

“You weren’t kidding when you said you were shooting blanks,” Sam says she thrusts herself towards him once more. Jarvier feels her nails tear at his throat and then the coldness of everything quickly coming at him, followed soon after by her dead eyes staring at him once more while he takes a nervous drag on his cigarette.

“Why would he interfere, he’s the one who contacted me in the first place,” Sophie says as she gets wearily to her feet.

“These things that’re happening can’t be anything more than doctors manipulation, maybe he’s watching on the outside, playing with us like we’re his FUCKING own personal toys!” Jarvier hisses through clenched teeth as he tightens his hands into fists before spinning around and looking into the sky. “You hear me TOWNS! I’M NOT PLAYING ANYMORE!”

“But why would he do that?”

“To be a fucking arsehole, it’s the only reason he needs.”

“I-I-I, I don’t think that’s why he would be interfering, I think it’d be a more practical reason. He’s a writer, and every move he’d make would be to advance the plot somehow, so I can only assume that if it’s not something to do with me, it’s something to do with you,” she says as she glares at Jarvier with her big blue eyes. “Is there something you’re not telling me?”

Jarvier smiles nervously and bites down on the flesh that surrounds his fingernails. “I swear to you th…” He thrusts forward with a devastating backhand that send her to the ground. “What the FUCK is it with you and your fucking pushy arsed female characters Towns? Bitch should’ve just kept her mouth shut and played her role. Now you’ve got to make a choice, the bitch or…”

It’s like the stomach churn you get from a lift at first and then every inch of his being feels like it’s ripped apart. When the world stops its assault Jarvier finds himself standing at the bottom of some steps that led up to an old mud brick home. Leaning against one of the porches support beams looking down upon him with a half eaten apple in his hand is Marty, “You can stop with all the profanity Jarvier, I’m listening“

“So correct me if I’m not following you correctly, but Jarvier, the hero from the original story is now working for the thing he tried and died several times trying to stop in the first story, right?”

“That’s how it seems to be going,” he replies coldly.

    “But why?”

“What do you mean by why?”

“I mean exactly what why means. Why have Jarvier deviate, why have him become the bad guy. Why have him go against everything his character stood for?”

“He’s not the bad guy, he just doesn’t have a choice, none of us do. And if you think this is outside his characters boundaries, you need to reread the first story again, because he’s no saint,” he says looking up from the notepad and locking eyes with the both before looking back down. “Besides, it doesn’t really effect your part in the whole crisscrossing situation, so what does it matter to you anyway?”

“Because , I’m going to get the blame.”

He looks up again and smiles, “I know, but that’s the idea. In the end you always will.”

“But why me? Why can’t it be you for once?”

“Because that’s the role I created you to play.”

“Can you understand me?” Jarvier says as he grabs a handful of Sophie’s hair and pulls it back.

“J-Jar?” She says softly as a wicked smile grows across her face. Jarvier let’s go and takes a step back in shock.

“What, you don’t want to be my valentine anymore?” Marilyn says as she slowly shuffles to her feet, standing awkwardly like a puppet who’s strings have been cut.

“W-W-What the fuck is going on? W-We had a DEAL!” He yells.

“Had is such a naughty word, isn’t it lover boy,” she says with a wicked laugh. “But deals change as the wind blows, and yours my love is blowing hard.”

Jarvier quickly has his revolver out and his finger threatening to squeeze the trigger. “I’ve kept my end this far, so will it!” He growls through clenched teeth, the spit in his face softens as the blood runs out of his face, and he stares confusingly at a petrified Sophie as she holds her hands over her face in fear screaming his name.

“M-My god S-Sophie,” he says softly in shock. “I-I-I’m so sorry, you have to believe me, it  wasn’t m-m-y, my fault. ”

“What the FUCK happened to you? You’re eyes were like Glenn’s, black empty voids of life and your skin was pale like a freaking zombie!”

“I-I-I, I don’t know, one minute I’m pulling you from the wreckage and the next minute you’re not you and, and I, I-I-I,” he stares off momentarily into the vast emptiness of the space between them before she pulls him back into the here and now.

“Jarvier, are you listening to me? Who was I?”

“S-S-Someone who used to mean a whole lot to me,” Jarvier says as he runs his neck awkwardly, turning away to hide the tears that well up in his eyes.

“Then tell me what this deal is all about?” She asks, slowly Jarvier turns back to her and angles his head like an interested puppy dog.

    “What do you mean?”

“I mean, what’s the deal you were going on about before. Because it seemed mighty important at the time.”

“It’s nothing that matters right now, it’s from a long time ago. We have to move, it’s playing with us. Making us fight with each other to confuse us of our aim.”

“No it, it doesn’t feel the same. It feels different.”

    “What do you mean, different?”

“It feels like this time it wasn’t trying to kill us, it was trying to show us something. That’s why  it makes me think it wasn’t that thing, that did this.”

“Don’t be stupid, if it wasn’t the beast the only other thing it could be is….” Jarvier’s words trail off as he realises who else could be playing with them. “Towns,” he hisses under his breath.

“What the FUCK do you mean you don’t know? I knew it was a bad idea letting you drive after what happened at the patrol station. FUCK!” Glenn yells as he thrusts himself back in his seat and looks over Sophie in disbelief.

“I, I just don’t know. One minute I was. Wait, why do you mean after what happened at the patrol station?”

He looks at her and punches the dashboard, “FUCK! Soph you have got to get help, before everything around you unravels and the true nature of the world presents itself to y…” Glenn doesn’t get to finish his sentence as the Chevy is t-boned by a large black SUV. The Chevy is powered across the road into the dense bush land, the SUV pushing it all the way. When the two vehicles finally come to a stop silence claims all those aboard, until after sometime there is finally movement.
Sophie clutches her head as she wearily looks around the decimated cabin which was once her pride and joy.

It hisses at her, reaching with its blood stained hands as the endless voids which once housed its eyes stares at her unflinching while it remains locked in its seat belt, looking down upon her from into the SUV which is to become its tomb. She screams in absolute terror before falling to a mummer as she catches movement in the corner of her eye from inside the cabin.

“W-W-W-What have y-y-yo-o-ou DONE!” Glenn stutters as he moves into the light, half his face a bloody mangulated mess, the other a pale empty version of who he once was.

“OH GOD GLENN!” Sophie screams in terror as she starts shaking uncontrollably and edges herself into the alcove beneath the dashboard while Green flops lifeless onto the seat in front of her, his only eye stares emotionally, empty towards her.
    “WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING!”

“Penance my sweet,” Glenn hisses through razor-sharp teeth. “Penance for the child of a thousand days. Penance for a beast who waits at bay. Penance for the maker who runs and hides. Penance for all those that have di….” The explosion of a shotgun shell leaving its chamber cuts short his words, then it turns his head into a bittersweet memory. Sophie screams anew, as hands pull her out and toss her to the ground. At first she shields her eyes and ears, while screaming uncontrollably until an open hand connects with her face being her cries to an end, then she hears his voice promising her hope once more.

She slowly takes Javier’s hand and he pulls Sophie to her feet.

”S-S-So all this is a dream?” She asks.

”Sure, if it’ll make you play along,” Jarvier replies as he quickly drags her down through her apartment and out into the hallway.

“If it’ll make me play along? I don’t want to play along with anything, I just wanna wake up!” Sophie says as she pulls herself free of his grip.

“We don’t have time to stand here and argue again, and for the record I’m always right no matter which way you come at it.”

”Again? Are you saying we’ve done this before?” Sophie asks as her jaw drops open and her bottom lip trembles.

He smiles softly and touches her face. “Too many times to count.”

She pulls away from his touch with wide open eyes. “T-T-Then why don’t I remember and you do?”

He rolls his eyes and let’s out at breathe. “It ebbs and flows. Sometimes you remember, other times you don’t. This time around you obviously only recall very little of what’s going on, the bare minimum I’m guessing from the questions you’re asking.”

“Don’t talk about me to me like I’m a FUCKING brick wall! How do I know all of this isn’t some elaborate hoax, and your just trying to manipulate me into thinking it’s real so you can discredit what I’ve found out about MARTY TOWNS!” Sophie screams as everything seemingly stops and turns it’s attention to her. “W-W-What-t-t-t’s hap-p-p-ping?” She asks through stuttered words as she slowly looks around at the shadows as they slowly begin to close in on them.

“They’ve heard you, or it has,” Javier says through clenched teeth as the world quickly begins to fall into darkness as he tightly grips her hand. “It’s time we jump this shark!”

    “Jump the shark?”

“Like Fonzie! We jump the shark and live to fight another day,” Javier yells as he drags her towards the doorway that leads to the stairwell. Sophie screams as she feels invisible hands grab at her and then a sudden wash of light washes over her and she finds herself behind the wheel of her Chevy Ute and begins to scream as she slams on the breaks, sending the ute into a fishtail.

”WHAT THE FUCK!” Glenn yells from the passenger seat as he grabs hold of the steering wheel as he desperately tries to get the ute under control before it flips.

Sophie sits there with her heart pumping a million miles an hour, she can hear Glenn scream at her but nothing she can understand until he has brought the ute to a stop and he grips her by the shoulders, shaking her violently.

”Soph, what the FUCK is going ON?” He yells, she looks up at him in total confusion and her lip begins to tremble as tears escape her eyes.

The darkness wraps around her naked body like a blanket of blades, tearing into everything she is until she no longer hears her own cries. It’s at that point that it releases her and she sits up in her bed, sweat pouring from her flesh like an overflowing bath tub.

The door to her bedroom crashes open and Glenn rushes in, baseball bat at the ready.

“WHAT THE FUCK!” He yells as he flicks the light on.

Sophie rolls herself up into a ball, “DON’T DO IT GLENN! PLEASE DON’T!” She screams, he stands there perplexed as the bat gently sways from side to side in his hands.

“Shit Soph, I ain’t gonna hit you. What the fuck would make you think that? I just heard you scream out, and thought someone was in your room. Had I know you were just dreaming, I would’ve just ignored your bitch-arsed cries.”

“I-I-I,” She stammers then laughs nervously. “I don’t know. I guess it’s all this research I’ve been doing, It’s got me twisting up a pole or two.”

“Fucking told you to turn that shit off, didn’t I? Fucking told you it’d send you all crazy like a bitch. Why the hell don’t you leave it alone and do something normal.”

“And running around the house in the middle of the night with a baseball bat is normal? How do you even own one of those things, I’ve never seen you in a pair of runners let alone play sport.”

He casts a nervous glance at the baseball bat as he lower it to the ground and smiles awkwardly. “Fuck you Soph, just because I made a valid point doesn’t mean you get to try and stick me with shit.”

“Then back off and leave me alone, this is important to me.”

“Why? What make this important to you? It’s only a fucking story!”

“It’s important to her, because she’s the one who finds Towns and slays the beast,” Jarvier says as he drives the butt of his revolver into Glenn’s skull, knocking him to the ground.

Sophie scream in panic, as Jarvier holds his hands up to her in a calming fashion.

“What the FUCK is going ON? WHY CAN’T I WAKE UP!” She screams.

“Because it won’t let you,” Javier says as he reaches out to her slowly. “But I can help, and together we can make sure you wake up tomorrow.”

Gunfire rips through the air and Glenn’s twisted lifeless corpse crashes to the ground in a bloody heap. Sophie screams louder as Jarvier moves swiftly from out of the shadows, his revolver still at the ready.

“WHO ARE YOU!” She screams as she shields herself with her hands in hope of protecting herself against further gunfire.

“Sophie McAdams, there’s no need to be afraid. My name is Javier Toddard, I’m a Detective with the special crime unit, you need to come with me,” Javier says as he holds out a hand towards her.

“Wh-Wh-What’s happening, you can’t be, you’re not real.”

“I’m standing in front of you, after just putting a bullet in your room mates head after he became infected by its word and attempted to bash your head in with a baseball bat. I think maybe you need to throw the real and the make-believe out the window and just trust what your eyes can see standing in front of you,” Javier says as he shakes his hand as a way of encouraging her to take it. “We can’t waste time, if it works out we’ve shifted the focus it will attempt a reset.”

    “A-A-A, a reset?”

“You know, when you wake up from a really bad dream that felt like it was as real as everything feels right now, that’s a reset. That soulless piece of shit wants only one thing, and it’ll keep shifting the focus of everything to make it that way. We’ve only got one shot to stop it and we need Towns to do that, but beastly wants Towns to finish its story, so we’re in a bind and only you can help us out.”

    “W-W-Why me.”

“Because, that’s the character he wrote you to play. You’re the one who finds him and slays the beast.”

“W-W-Wrote me to play? You’ve got this all wrong, you’re the one who’s from his books I-I’m a nobody, I’m not some made up character.”

“Honey would I be here if you weren’t part of his story?”

“I’m dreaming again, t-t-that’s all. N-N-None of this is real, it’s just in my head.”

“Sister if this is all just in your head, then I’d suggest you go see someone or stop reading whatever weird shit you’re reading, or watching for that matter. But whatever the case may be you have to listen to me you and take my hand regardless of what this really is. You know what they say about dying in your dreams, right?” He asks seconds before Glenn drives his baseball bat into Jarvier’s skull and knocks him to the ground, then proceeds to hit him again and again before finally turning his attention back to Sophie.

He smiles a toothy grin and laughs before swinging the bat wildly towards her.

We Are The Fear That Never Dies – Part Twenty

“Why can’t you just tell me what you want instead of taunting me with these impossible riddles you amuse yourself with!” Javier says as he launches himself to his feet and defiantly stares the beast down. “What the HELL do you mean by me being Rudolph?”

It sniggers deeply as its already malformed face twists like a wound up rubber band then cracks open like an egg to reveal thousands of sharp teeth.

“Metaphors are what make us, what we are. But if you must understand, then I will share with you a moment so you can understand what it is you must do and how doing what I ask will make everything be complete.”

“You give me that day again, and you make it last forever I’ll give you whatever you want.”

“I swear it will so,” the beast growls as an image of a girl appears before them. “Her name is Sophie McAdams, she holds the key to how this all ends.”

“If she’s so important why don’t you just trap her like you have done with me?”

“Because she’s part to the current story, where you’re fodder, a leftover character given a glimpse of tomorrow but with no real role until now that is.”

Javier bites down on a cigarette as he ignites it, taking several strong drags on it before blowing a bellowing ball of smoke into the beast face, “So, you want me to kill her?”

The beast smiles, “No brother, I want you to save her, I want you to protect her. Towns has created her to find where he has hidden himself, his true self and then to slay me. But if we control the weapon, we control destiny,” the beast says as the darkness melts away and Javier finds himself standing in a hallway. As his eyes move around his new surroundings he spies a disfigured figure standing slouched at the opposite end of the hallway brandishing a baseball bat, a woman’s body laying at its feet.

The figure looks over to Javier and he sees its teeth glimmer in the darkness. Suddenly it stands upright and turns its head towards the girl then jerks forward, lunging towards her. She scrambles backwards, screaming in fear as the it grabs at her relentlessly, with little hesitation Javier raises his revolver and squeezes the trigger.

“I AM NOT YOUR TOY!” Javier screams as he shoves the revolver to his head, but this time there is no explosion.

This time there is no pain.

This time, there is only darkness and the beast.

“Why do you continue to fight me brother?” It births into this world like scratching on a blackboard.

“Why won’t you just let me FUCKING DIE!” Jarvier screams as he pulls the trigger again and again with no result.

“I am not doing this out of hate, it is love that I do all this for,” the beast replies.

Javier laughs momentarily before pulling the trigger again. “FUCK YOU!” He yells as he pulls a blade from jacket and slices it across his throat. He screams in agony as the blade tears open veins with glorious jets of crimson flowing before his eyes, then nothing and he sits before the beast once more, naked this time.

“I have no desire to see you dead brother, trust in me and I will make all your greatest desires be,” the beast hisses.

“I have no desire to care what you WANT!” Javier spits as he bites down deeply taking mouthful of flesh and tendons from his wrists in a sea of red that washes over him.

The birds song sings loudly in his ears, as he shields his eyes from the blinding sunlight, as the warmth washes over him he feels her hand come to rest on his chest.

“I don’t want this day to ever end,” she says as she kisses his bare flesh.

He feels the tears well up in his eyes as his bottom lip trembles.

    “STOP THIS!”

“If you listen to what I have to say, I can make this day never end,” its disembodied voice hisses.

“I-It wouldn’t be real, you can promise that which you can’t give,” Jarvier says as he opens his eyes and stares into its pools of nothingness.

“I can promise anything if you help me brother. I can promise forever if you so desire.”

    “H-H-How?”

“I need you to become my Rudolph and help guide my sleigh tonight,” the beast hisses.

“How many more times?” He softly hisses through clenched teeth as he stares at her soulless empty eyes, but she gives no reply. He leaps to his feet and flicks the cigarette to the ground as he unloads several shots into Sam’s skull as she leaps from the darkness, then effortlessly twists around and sends another two into Victoria’s.

He releases the empty clip and locks a fresh one in its place. “Oh, why won’t you stay dead,” he says nonchalantly, his voice void of emotion.

”Come on lover, don’t be like that. I thought you had at least a few hundred more repetitions left in you before you’d break,” Marilyn says as she slithers out of the darkness.

“I’m not your play toy,” He says as he places the gun to his head and fires.

His eyes watch with little wonder as the ash falls from the cigarette and lightly tumbles to the ground as if time had no weight at all. He takes a deep drag and looks up into her dead eyes. “I’m not your play toy,” he says as he flicks the cigarette at her and thrusts his revolver to the side of his head. “I’M NOT YOUR PLAY TOY!” He screams with laughter as he pulls the trigger.

The ash from the cigarette falls to the ground and his eyes watch as it explodes in a ball of dust as it hits the ground. He eyes meet her soulless empty eyes and he smiles, quickly pulling his revolver up to the side of his head and squeezing the trigger.

As the ash falls to the ground he places his revolver to his head and pulls the trigger.

He shoves the barrel of his revolver to the side of his head and pulls the trigger.

“ENOUGH!” The beast bellows as the room melts away to nothing’s and only it and Javier remain.

”I say when it’s ENOUGH!” Javier yells as he jams his revolver into the side of his head and squeezes the trigger.

The ash falls into the darkness as his eyes rise up to meet its large pools of nothingness.

  • We Are The Darkness That Never Shines – Part Seventeen

We Are The Darkness That Never Shines – Part Seventeen

“There is a point in every existence when we question what is, and what could be. We three are at that point,” he says looking across the table at the two men who sit opposite him, one of the men meet his gaze while the other concentrates his focus on the words he scribbles down into the small writing pad before him.

“We’re at a completely different, what could be situation than your normal run of the mill pondering of future destinations.”

    “Why do you say that?”

“Because we actually have control over what happens next.”

“We, control nothing. He on the other hand,” he says as he nods towards the man who continues to expel the contents of his head into words on paper. “He controls it all.”

“So WE have control over what happens next, like I said.”

“But what if he doesn’t agree with what we think should happen?”

“But he will, and we will, because we’re all one mind focused on one aim.”

“But we’re not one mind. I’m me, you’re you, and he’s whoever the fuck he wants himself to be at any given time.”

He looks up from the paper and stares at the man, before looking back down and continues to write.

“You talk like you know what’s happening, but you don’t really understand who he actually is and what we actually are because of him.”

“I know enough, I know he’s some big shot wanna be who thinks he can play with people’s feelings. I know he thinks he has enough smarts about him to outwit his own ideas. But what he doesn’t know is I know more than he’s letting on, and it’s killing him because he doesn’t know how I know what I know,” he says with a broad smile.

    “None of that makes sense.”

“Of course it does, but you’re just an abstract character who he’s using to try and find out why I know what I know. Unfortunately every time he tries to write why I know things, the story shifts and he can’t focus on what he wants to write. Like right now. He’s stuck in a loop, trying to work his way back to the part of the story where I tell you what I know, and why I know it.”

“So, why do you know what you know?”

“Like I said, we three are at a point where what could be, can be,” He says as he smiles broadly again and leans forward, placing a hand on the notepad.

  • We Are The Fear That Never Dies – Part Sixteen

We Are The Fear That Never Dies – Part Sixteen

Fingernails dig into his flesh, as well as teeth as Jarvier finds himself dragged to the ground by the two girls, he screams in fear, he screams in anger.

He feels it pierce his chest and grip his innards before ripping outwards with a handful if his intestines.

“Look at that, you are just like everyone else on the inside.”

He looks up into Marilyn’s twisted face and grits his teeth with hate.

“Stop playing with me, if your going to kill me just get it over and done with,” He hisses, causing her to smile broadly.

“Lover if it wanted you dead, we would’ve disembowled you many times ago instead of going over and over this charade,” she replies with a sarcastic laugh.

“W-Why? What’s so special about me?”

“We don’t know. But more importantly, it doesn’t know why you’re still part of the story. All it can assume is, that he resurrected you for a reason and it wants to know why?”

“W-What the fuck are you taking about?”

”I’m talking about the fear that never dies. I’m talking about yesterday being tomorrow and tomorrow behind yesterday. I’m talking about Towns and The Roundhead. I’m talking about what that little shit did to us, about what you did to him, remember lover? Remember what happened when you’re eyes were opened?” She says as they stare into each other’s eyes, before he looks away and watches as the ash falls softly to the ground from the end of his cigarette and he breathes a lungful of smoke out, letting out a volatile cough comprised of saliva and blood shortly after.

He looks up into Marilyn’s dead eyes and shoves a shaking fist into his mouth which he bites powerfully down upon as he sobs uncontrollably, piercing the flesh as he does.

“Don’t be like that lover, things don’t have to change between us because of all this does it?” Sam says with a twisted smiled upon her pale face, he quickly raises his revolver and unloads the remainder of the clip into her skull.

“WHY WON’T ANY OF YOU STAY DEAD!”

  • We Are The Fear That Never Dies – Part Fifteen

We Are The Fear That Never Dies – Part Fifteen

Javier squeezes the trigger back and squints his eyes in anticipation, but there is no explosion, there is no propelling of forged steel, there is nothing but her smile.

She pushes her bottom lip out like an unhappy child. “That’s not the welcome I expected,” she says before smiling a broad toothy grin. “That’s a lie, you did exactly what I thought you’d do. I mean shit lover, I just killed you right in front of you, that’s gotta fuck a man up,” she says confidently, thrusting her chest out and slamming her fists into her hips proudly.

“This is all a dream. You’re dead and whoever that was, was nothing more than my mind fucking with me.”

She pouts once again, “Lover, if this was a dream this next wouldn’t hurt as much as it’s going to,” she says as arms grab Javier from behind and pull him backwards, he struggles to free himself but finds it impossible to escape.

“Don’t be so quick to run away hunk-o-spunk, the night is young,” Victoria hisses into his left ear.

“We’ve got more fun than any one man could ever want and I know you’d regret not being a part of it,” Sam whispers in his right ear, biting his earlobe.

He feels steel touch his bare chest and looks up into Marilyn’s soulless empty eyes as she holds the blade to his chest.

“Don’t take it personally lover, but there’s just so many things we have to show you I don’t really know where to start. So I thought I’d just cut to the chase and bring on the end.”

“If this is all real and not a dream like I think it is, the fact that that’s my future self on the floor over there means you’ve already killed me tonight and you won’t be killing me again,” he says, her smile drops as she casts a quick glance over to his corpse and then back to Javier.

“The future can cha…,” she says before a shot rips through her head.
